News Notes & Spins – May 1 2012

What does it say about the programmers and djs at community radio stations when they don’t really recognize music from the community (state) in which they are licensed to broadcast? OUCH – oh no he didn’t! Uh, yeah, I did.

Every month, I comb through literally hundreds of daily playlists from stations all around the state in order to cull and tabulate the monthly spins charts. And here’s what I’ve found out over the past few years — the VAST MAJORITY of djs doing shows statewide on community radio stations don’t ever touch upon music by a Colorado act, known or unknown. TRUTH.

That’s taking nothing away from those who do. I want to make that perfectly clear. I’m deeply thankful to those djs, programmers, and radio stations that do make a concerted effort to get Colorado music on the air. Stations like KRFC (Fort Collins) and OPEN AIR 1340 AM (Denver) have made that commitment very obvious. On average you’ll hear somewhere in the ballpark of 13-15% of their airtime devoted to recordings from here in the state. That’s on top of the hours they devote to live in-studio appearances by Colorado acts. The rest? …less than 5% on average per month.  In many cases I’ve been hard pressed to find even five individual album titles played, let alone five with more than a spin or two a month.  There are some stations that statistically don’t air any current Colorado releases at all – in any genre.

Here’s an interesting comparison: Under the Canadian Commercial Radio Policy, 35% of all music aired each week on all AM and FM stations must be Canadian. We have no such rules in the US, even for COMMUNITY/PUBLIC radio.

35%! I can’t even begin to imagine what community radio in Colorado would sound like if we did that.  Imagine if 1 out of every 3 songs you heard was from a Colorado act … and that’s only 33%. Hell, all I’m asking for is 16.6% (2 songs per hour on average).  What kind of impact would radio have then?

Scott Foley hosts a show and serves as the de facto Colorado music genre captain, as well as the Americana music genre captain at KRFC.  When a few of us were discussing this subject on my Facebook page he wrote, “There needs to be a relationship between artists and their community stations. [As Chris has pointed out before,] we can’t support an artist if they don’t make their music available to us. Likewise, the relationship should include in-studio time, station sponsored concerts and events and even artist support during membership drives. These are mutually beneficial opportunities that allow a station to sink stronger roots into its community.”

Kerri Pastine of the Informants added; “My assumption would be that the DJs aren’t getting out and discovering all of the local music there is, but then again, I really don’t know how they get turned on to it all, as there’s so much.”

This is a complex issue for sure. The people who volunteer their time to do shows at these stations are our neighbors and our friends, our parents and our children here in the state.  I believe we all want the same result – a greater awareness of the communities we live in – that is what lies at the heart of community radio.

The solution may be as simple as getting the music straight to those who do the shows. Maybe … since what they tend to play is music they are already familiar with  …so if we can get the music directly into their hands they’ll play it …. MAYBE. We’ll see … I’m hopeful 🙂

In radio news, KBUT (Crested Butte) has a nation wide search going for a new General Manager. As of April 17th, KBUT General Manager Ryan Stringfellow has decided to step down from his position. He plans to return to Grand Junction with his family to pursue an advanced degree in Education from Colorado Mesa University. Read Ryan’s farewell message here: http://www.kbut.org/page.cfm?pageid=21032.

KBUT is now in the midst of a national search for it’s next General Manager. Interested parties can learn more at the KBUT website: http://www.kbut.org/page.cfm?pageid=21031. Applications are due by Monday, May 7th.

It’s spring membership drive time at nearly all of the public/community stations statewide. I know that KRFC (Fort Collins) is engaged in theirs as I write and others are also, or are about to become. Please support your local community/public radio station. Without our support, these stations truly cannot survive. For some of them (KOTO in Telluride for example) all or nearly all of the money they receive to support their efforts comes directly from supportive listeners. AND – please do request that they play more Colorado music when you make that contribution.

The Colorado Sound – VOL 4, EP15 2012

It is soooo great to see the daytime temps up in the 70s and 80s again along the Front Range.  Time to drop the top, make a half dozen mix cds and get some open air listening in while I’m scurrying back and forth between festivals – which for me started last week with FOCOMX (340+ bands in 37 venues) … next up for me is the CHUN People’s Fair – 1st wkend in June at Civic Center Park in downtown Denver.  In the meantime, as folks keep asking me what I’m really diggin nowadays …..

If you can’t get excited about a new Leftover Salmon record, you’re just not not a true Colorado music lover.  So, HELL YEAH I’m excited to get Aquatic Hitchhiker.  Vince Herman messaged me this week … record’s on the way.  I’m stoked.   It’s the first new album of all original tunes in like 8 years!  Hope to have it in time for EP16 next week.  Here’s a taste of what we can expect on the new album, courtesy of eTown.  If you can’t tell I’m excited, you don’t this old goat too well 😉

Megan Redmond – Dreamland — a tasty bit of crossover pop country/americana from this young lady who is playing damn near every festival event of the summer from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins in 2012.  Not since Katie Moffatt in the early 70s has there been, to the best of my knowledge, a top female pop country artist break out of Colorado.  Her 6 song debut ep is full of songs she wrote or co-wrote, and was produced in Nashville with some top session players.  The first single, “Falling,” was placed on industry news leader ALLACCESS.COM’s “Cool New Country” highlight list… then landed on Clear Channel Media’s show on hot new country propelling “Falling” onto the Top 100 Country charts on both Mediabase and Nielsen BDS.

Rebel Tongue – Movin On … several years ago now I got hipped to U.S. Pipe – a band that featured lead MC Azma Holiday.  That band broke up.  Azma and some of the members of the Pipe moved on – to REBEL TONGUE.  I knew Azma as a rapper – NOW I know him as a soulful singer and rapper with a group of funk masters backing him up.  Give me a band with a wickedly tight and groovin rhythm section, a couple of horns, and a front guy who OWNS an audience and I’m a sucka for love like this anytime.  Here’s the official teaser they came up with.

Mosey West – Merica — Hmmmm …. over the past two years this band, originally called Merica before changing their name to Mosey West, has reaped more praise and more accomplishments here locally than just about any band I can name outside of those who have gained national attention — i.e. The Lumineers or Tennis.  Expect even greater praise and accomplishments in 2012.   I expect this record is going to be listed on many critics lists as a “best of 2012.”

I’m not going to include an outtake of News & Notes this week.  Over the next couple of days, I’ll present the story about Biodiesel for Bands in text form.  It’s a great story – a great opportunity – and a great idea.  So watch here for that …

News Notes & Spins – APRIL 1 2012

Happy Spring.  As I sit and write today we’re expecting record setting temps along the Front Range.  And as I sit and review the adds and spins for the month it appears we’ve had a record setting month.  The Lumineers self-titled debut on Dualtone Records was added by more stations (commercial and non-comm) than I’ve seen the past couple of years,  aside from much more well established and nationally popular acts like DeVotchKa, landing the debut far in front of the pack in scoring.  I fully expect that The Lumineers release will rise up quickly on the national CMJ charts that measure non-comm and college radio, where the new Tennis release, Young & Old, has held onto TOP 3 positions the past couple of weeks.

I’m often asked how many Colorado albums a year are produced and distributed to radio.  Going back through the past couple of years worth of charts, it appears I’ve tracked about 340 or so album titles during any given 12-14 month period, of which approximately 45-50% receive any measurable airplay monthly.  I estimate there are over 500 records a year coming from Colorado bands today, whether produced here or elsewhere.

I do have to point out that there are some severely underrepresented styles of music on the list of releases, including most forms of Loud Music (metal, punk, etc), hip-hop/rap, and pop-country.  It’s not that the music isn’t being recorded, nor is it that we lack that music in our live music scene.  Quite frankly these are highly popular styles that just don’t seem to grab the attention of the independent djs and programmers that make up the bulk of those who appear on air at the community and public radio stations I cull the spin data from.

I highly recommend paying attention to Westword and HeyReverb, as both those media outlets do an excellent job of exposing all of us to those styles we may not hear on the airwaves around the state.  And yes, I too wish for greater inclusion of all styles of music in radio and at the numerous music festivals regionally.  It is a common topic of conversation among those of us engaged in music festivals and radio around the state.

Re live music … I came across an article in Westword this past couple of weeks that’s worth mentioning … WESTAF introduces Independent Music on Tour, a grant program for local musicians.

Re radio news … KDNK (Carbondale) has a new Underwriter Director: Jen Roeser    …and KBUT (Crested Butte) is starting a new segment titled “Artistically Speaking” that will highlight cultural and art events from Gunnison to Crested Butte.  The segment is brought to KBUT by the Arts Alliance, and will air M, W, and F at 10 AM.

Speaking of radio — I’ve added a new feature this month.  Following the station by station breakdown, I’ve provided a Genre/Program Format breakdown that encompasses the major genres and/or radio program formats i.e.
Americana
Blues
Bluegrass
Folk
Funk/Hip Hop/Urban Contemporary
Indie/New-Alternative
Jazz
Pop/Adult Contemporary
Rock/Adult Alternative.

The Colorado Sound – V4 EP11 2012

Okay, this is late this week – just a day, but still … I had six events to do in four days … including two of the most incredible days of the Denver UMX I can remember as an emcee over the past nine years.  Between that and four straight nights of doing sound, I’m feeling a bit foggy and brain dead (and slightly hearing damaged).  I know that I’ll miss someone I saw on stage or in the crowd but I do have to point out some notables … starting with the Yawpers on Friday night.

When you see two guys with acoustic guitars plus a drummer take the stage and you’re asking where the bass player and electric instruments are and the band says “this is it” you begin to wonder if those responsible for booking the band even bothered to check the band out previously — seriously.  You just don’t see this type of set up … and virtually never on a Friday night in a room that doesn’t do acoustic music on Friday nights.  BUT – this is NO “just simply acoustic” band.   Never fear – these guys literally and figuratively “rock the house.”  Given that Band Guru Mark Bliesener (Danielle Ate the Sandwich and several nationals) showed up and let me know he was the band’s manager – it became very obvious very quickly that this is a band on the verge of blowing up regionally.   Look for great things — and get thee to a show.  Their ep, Savage Blue, just does not do this band justice.  Make the trip kids .. it’s worth it.

Shout outs to many friends at the UMX this weekend.  The UMX is the official audition for the Capitol Hill People’s Fair, now in its 41st year.  Most of the folks playing in bands were not even born then… check it out at PeoplesFair.com … there were over 80 acts auditioning for one of about 40 open slots in this year’s festival, coming up June 2&3 at Civic Park in Denver.   All in all about 110 acts will take one of six stages this June.  The bands that came out to audition came loaded, locked, and ready to rumble for a slot.  I cannot remember any other wkend in the past nine years where so many bands were so highly scored.  All I can say it … good luck .. when the ballots are tabulated it’s going to be the highest scoring UMX season on record, I’m sure.

Props to The Holler out of Fort Collins – who totally rocked the house with one of the tightest sets on Saturday – they definitely brought the party and set the bar for every act that followed them.  Other very impressive sets were turned in by The Foot., Rebel Tongue, the Blender Cats, Instant Empire, Gang Forward, and Jet Edison to name a handful.

Here’s what got played on the show this week.

Dan Fogelberg “Stars” from Live From Ebbet’s Field Vol. 4 (2010)

The Colorado Sound – V4 EP10 2012

Ok, so I like keep telling folks – if it ain’t from Colorado I don’t know jack — so how was I supposed to know that the new Big Head & the Monsters “Sexy and I Know It” is a cover of the LFMAO track?   Huh?  Well?  If it ain’t from Colorado I don’t know it … (with extremely few exceptions).    I had to go to youtube to check out the LFMAO version (also finding Todd’s solo version … see below).  Can’t say as I care much for LFMAO’s version, but then I’m not a Venus beach type anyway — give me some “303” – speaking of which, Broken Tongues is representin’ – check out their intro video below … … Todd’s version of the song is much better IMO LOL.

I had one very great nearly three hour hang over a couple pints of Irish ale with Katie Glassman this week … after doing sound for her trio last week I became enthralled with the uniqueness of her voice – vocally and musically.  Turns out that before Sir Paul McCartney did his swing album, Katie had envisioned doing one of her own, complete with five songs that ultimately appeared on Paul’s disc … so, she does the Beatles classic Honey Pie and would love to get it to Sir Paul.  Anyone got his number?  If so, please pass it along to Katie.

Katie’s Snapshot gets my nod for featured album of the month on the Colorado Sound.  John Macy at Silo along with friends like bassist Eric Thorin who arranged / co-arranged four of the tracks, and an all-star band that includes keyboardist Eric Moon and E-tones drummer Christian Teele as well as over a dozen other world class session players and award winners  make it one seriously fun record … especially if you’re into Texas country-swing-jazz with a dollup of airy indie-pop cuteness drizzled throughout Katie’s vocal stylization.

The Lumineers is counted as a debut this week – although I’ve had this particular track for several weeks now, Dualtone just sent the album out – and it’s picking up mad adds at stations around the state, including  KBCO (Boulder), KFMU (Steamboat), KSMT (Breckenridge), KSPN (Aspen), and KYSL (Breckenridge) – making it a sure shot for a #1 Out of the Box (OTB) DEBUT for the month.

And just because it’s too much fun, I included the newly released video from the Hickman-Dalton Gang in this week’s post … ’bout one of the best country videos I’ve seen come out of CO the past couple of years… it forces at least a big grin and some foot stompin. … lay that one in next to Gary Bragg’s hilarious Free Range video

Here’s what got played on this week’s show.

Slim Cessna’s Auto Club “This Is How We Do It in the Country” from Blovdy Tenent Trvth Peace (2004)

News Notes & Spins – March 1, 2012

Sorry I got this month’s column off late.  Officially? – hand surgery sucks.  Until you get to use the hand that got fixed and you realize it feels much better than before you got it fixed.  So, with that in mind, thank you for the many kind emails and text messages this past week.  It was a lot of one finger typing this weekend.

In radio news – this is a very important time of year as local community/public radio stations go on-air to encourage your financial support.  So far, from what I’ve been able to see and hear, those efforts are producing wonderful results.  As I was listening to Colorado Public Radio (CPR) recently I heard they hit their membership goals in record time, hitting goal two days early with record numbers.  In Crested Butte, KBUT reports they completed their “…2012 Winter Pledge Drive on February 17th, raising a record $42,000 in 12 days. Spirits are high and support for community radio is strong in the Gunnison Valley.”  KRFC Fort Collins is celebrating their 9th B-day this month.  They are hoping to set new records themselves in fund raising, in order to maintain their focus on music from here in Colorado.  KGNU’s (Boulder) membership/fund drive runs through March 10.

All in all, local support is the key to maintaining a vibrant community/public radio station in our cities and towns … and from the looks of our charts every month, the key to keeping Colorado music on the air throughout the state.  Community/public radio stations are by and large the most significant media outlets for our music scenes.

The University of Colorado student radio station KVCU aka Radio 1190 (Boulder) has been undergoing some changes since the departure of Mike Flanagan and some of the old Radio 1190 kids, who went on to form Open Air 1340.   In October the station hired Mikey Goldenberg, formerly an air talent and producer at commercial hot adult contemporary outlet KALC/105.9 Alice (Denver), as their new GM.   Since then the  CU Student Government’s Legislative Council has identified several problems that required a reasonably large restructuring of the station’s budget and staff, and a redirect of the station’s marketing and branding efforts.  There’s an excellent article on it at the Daily Camera, entitled CU-Boulder’s Radio 1190 to restructure, rebrand.\

I’ve got a new Colorado music show to introduce — the show itself is not new, just my awareness of it.  It’s hosted by David Browder Sunday nights 10-11 pm on KWRP 100.3 fm in Pueblo.  Thanks to David for spreading the music in the Pueblo area.

News, Notes & Spins – November 1, 2010

I love this time of year.  I love the weather.  I love that there are more new releases that come out every October than at any other time of year.  At least it seems that way to me.  Look at October’s spins and there seems to be a record number of DEBUT titles.  Leading the charge is Fierce Bad Rabbit, which on the strength of spins at KCSU, KRFC and the Colorado Sound is one of the highest charting DEBUTs I’ve tracked the past few years.  This being the first of November (or thereabouts) the next couple of monthly reports will no doubt focus on end-of-year stuff … your picks, and the top spins of 2010.  Have a great November — and for my friends in RMCR, see ya all soon 🙂
