Lots of moving and shaking going on regionally this past month it seems. KRFC executive director/station manager Chris Kennison resigned effective Aug 31, citing a need to return to the recording studio as well as performance opportunities he wants to follow up on in places like Japan. No official word from the board on a hiring process… or a future direction for the station… and since I’m on the board of directors, I can’t really say much until after the next board meeting on August 5th, when we’re slated to vote on some very important issues related to programming and staffing and such.
Is that the sound of Colorado music on KUNC?? Sources tell me that the programming team has committed to playing more Colorado music than ever before; in fact playing two Colorado releases per airshift. Good news for the folk/singer songwriters and acoustic players in the state. WTG ‘UNC!
On June 28, KBUT-FM received notification that its parent organization, Crested Butte Mountain Educational Radio, Inc., was selected by the FCC as the proposed recipient of a Construction Permit for a full power transmitter to replace its translator in Gunnison. This will mean that KBUT-FM will be able to build a new transmitter facility that will provide a stronger signal and HD signal to our listeners in Gunnison. This notification is only the first step in a long process that began with the submission of an application to the FCC in October of 2007. Going forward, if there is not a protest to the FCC’s decision, KBUT will be issued a new Construction Permit. Crested Butte Mountain Educational Radio, Inc. will then begin to raise the required funds ($150,000 to $200,000) for construction of the transmitter. Under FCC regulations, KBUT has three years from the issuance of the Construction Permit to complete the installation.
On a sad note, one of Colorado’s most acclaimed acoustic guitarists, Grant Gordy, was in an auto accident this past month in Toronto Canada. He was traveling with Jayme Stone. Reports from family and friends indicate that Grant sustained head and spinal injuries and fractured some vertebrae at the top of the spine by the Medulla. Grant is now with family in Chicago and is being treated by specialists. The most recent news I got was that he’s in a 24/7 specialized neck brace for the next year and may have also suffered some pretty serious internal injuries … wish Grant the best …
