The Colorado Sound got it’s start on 88.9FM KRFC (Fort Collins) in 2006. In 2010 it went independent. In 2016 the name was picked up by KUNC as the branding for the new 105.5 The Colorado Sound and the name of the show was changed to Chris K’s Colorado Playlist.
Today, it is the most widely distributed and heard locally produced independent music program in the state, heard on 30FM frequencies.
Producer and host Chris K., aka “goat,” is no stranger to Colorado music and radio. He has been on the air in Northern Colorado off and on since 1978, with on-air stints at KFKA-AM/FM Greeley (AC), KUAD AM/FM Windsor (Country, CHR/AC), KCSU Fort Collins (free-form), KSQI Greeley (AOR/AAA), KIMN Fort Collins (CHR/Hot AC), KPAW Fort Collins (Classic Rock), KGLL Fort Collins (Country), KRFC Fort Collins (free-form) and KJAC Greeley (AAA).
The Colorado Playlist is aired on KAFM (Grand Junction), KDNK (Carbondale), KFFR (Winter Park), KHEN (Salida), KJAC (Greeley), KLZR (Westcliffe), KOTO (Telluride), KOYC (Pueblo), KRZA (Alamosa), KSJD (Cortez) and KSUT (Ignacio/Durango).
Chris’ articles, essays, criticisms, reviews, and editorials have appeared online and in local, regional and national music and radio publications like Scene Magazine, FMQB, the Album Network, GodsofMusic.com, Makeastar.com, and the Colorado Music Buzz. He has published online playlists since the beginning of the 21st century.
Chris K. has been a character in the music scene along the Front Range of Colorado in six decades decades now … and despite the grass he chews on regularly, he shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.
Please support the stations that support Colorado music. What we have here is special in the nation. Terrestrial radio is STILL the front-line of how we discover music. It’s important that we support our friends who bring this show to you.
FUNDING: Please donate to the cause. The stations that air this program do not pay for it. Unlike NPR programming which costs the station A LOT, this show is provided for free on the condition that I can monetize it myself. DONATE HERE

Hi Chris! Dave Dougherty (Doc) here. I’m the guitarist from Papa Juke. Thanks for all you do for Colorado music. It’s a big deal to me. We are releasing our new CD next Saturday the 17th at the Colorado Feed & Grain. It’s called “Out of the Blues”. It’s a combination of core blues but then branches out to other forms while still retaining a bluesy feel It’s all original. I left you a copy in your mailbox yesterday. Hope you like it…enjoy.

Wow that was odd. I just wrote an really long comment but after I clicked submit my comment didn’t appear. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again. Regardless, just wanted to say great blog!
Chris, thanks for adding Dixie Leadfoot/Brent Loveday’s “Golden Ring” to your playlist–so appreciate the support! ~~Suzannah/Dixie

Where can I find the playlist from this morning 11/3 from 94.9? I caught a couple of songs that I’d like to dig into more.
Kory
Hi Kory. I just published the S7 EP40 playlist … you can find it there. What songs were you interested in?
I’m compelled to give feedback about a song I just heard on the show today. The Pink Floyd cover of Times by the Blue Canyon Boys? is a horrible horrible rendition! Completely misses the essence of a great great song. That cover was painful to the ear and insulting to the soul.
Otherwise I appreciate the worth of your show.
i genuinely appreciate your feedback. I’m happy you like the show 🙂
Hi, Chris! Is there any chance you can play more of Eamon Alger’s songs? The best winter solstice song I ever heard was his. I think it is just called Solstice (The Solstice Song?). I predict that, if you play it on the winter solstice, people will love it. I sure do!
I certainly think I would play more from his album that he sent me … I can’t get it in this week .. but pls remind me later. Best to email me at chriskmusic@gmail.com or find me on FB at Colorado Playlist. 🙂 Thanks for the suggestion 🙂
SmallFish by Eamon Alger. Please Play! Love for more folks to get to enjoy it!
Just now listening your latest show and catching some Zuba on KOTO – your intro references their forming in Boulder. I have a different recollection … my memory is Telluride. Liza moved here after wrapping up with Loaded Dice in Boulder, and started playing as “Liza and Billy” with our other local hero Billy Nershi. Zuba was a term used here (and I am sure other ski towns) to refer to someone who did not know how to ski or generally did not fit with our culture, interchangeable with Gaper.
Thanks for doing your show … from the SW corner of the state.
Thank you for the history. I’d double checking my sources. 🙂
Hi Chris,
Pam and Dan Colorado Mountain Music is heading out on our first major tour! We plan to ski at all the North American resorts on the Ikon ski pass (37) this winter playing shows along the way. Our tour goals are to follow our passion for skiing, music, and to raise awareness for climate action and sustainable living practices.

Would we be a fit for a spot on your radio show?
Love to connect with you 🙂
Pam
sounds like a great trip. have fun. 🙂
i was listening today on KRZA (Alamosa/taos) and you interviewed Jeremy Lawton. He was born in center, Colorado. I live in center, and when I bought the house the name “Lawton” was on the mailbox. coincidence?
Greg Demko
good question. I don’t know the answer.
Chris:
Long time listener…Would you please consider featuring something by Michael Stanley on an upcoming show? As you probably recall, his first “solo” LP was released on Tumbleweed Records (TWS106) and the second was recorded in Golden at Applewood Studio/mixed at Caribou Ranch…both produced by Bill Szymczak. Sadly, he passed away on Friday 05 March 2021 in Cleveland of lung cancer.
good call …
Not all the songs you have been playing show up on the Spotify list. I believe it was a humorous song that played after Nitty Gritty Dirt band’s “Will the Circle be Unbroken”, but before Cary Morin’s Jamie Rae I would sure like to know what song that was! Thank you! DJ Sullivan @ KSJD Community Radio, Cortez, Colorado
The Boulder Song by Shanna in a Dress from her new live album. It was a premiere this week.
