TOM SCHARF SELECTED AS BOHEMIAN FOUNDATION MUSIC PROGRAMS DIRECTOR

During this week’s episode of The Colorado Sound, I alluded to knowledge that former Swallow Hill CEO Tom Sharf was going to be named as the new Music Programs Director for the Bohemian Foundation.  I met Tom just as he was becoming CEO at Swallow Hill about eight years ago I guess… great guy who did an incredible job there.  I can’t wait to see what he does in Fort Collins and beyond with Bohemian.  Watch for an episode of Offstage Beyond the Music with Tom before the end of 2015.

So, because the show is produced a couple of days in advance of the week it airs, I did not have official confirmation that I could share. Well, here it is .. it came in this afternoon… straight from the Bohemian Foundation itself.

Tom Scharf HeadshotFORT COLLINS, Colo., Aug. 7, 2015 – Bohemian Foundation today announced it has selected Tom Scharf, former CEO of Denver non-profit Swallow Hill Music, to lead Bohemian Foundation’s Music Programs.

Scharf will start his new position at Bohemian Foundation Aug. 31, succeeding current music programs director, Kristen Karabensh.

“Tom Scharf is a professional with outstanding credentials and non-profit experience,” Bohemian Foundation Executive Director Cheryl Zimlich said. “We look forward to his leadership for the next phase of Music Programs’ development. This is an exciting new hire for our organization.”

Scharf served in the top role at Swallow Hill from 2007-2014. Under his direction, the nonprofit more than doubled its patronage, more than quadrupled its top-line revenues, built key strategic partnerships and dramatically increased its local and national profile. Swallow Hill is a 36-year-old organization that runs music education programs and produces music performances in the Denver area, including concerts at its own venues, the Denver Botanic Gardens and the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities.

“Bohemian Foundation is an organization aligned with my values,” said Scharf. “I truly believe that music can build community, and the foundation’s work is helping to do just that. I’m looking forward to advancing Music Programs initiatives, to becoming a part of the Fort Collins community and to being immersed in the burgeoning local music scene.”

Karabensh, who has served Bohemian Foundation for the past four years, will remain with the foundation through September, then will relocate out-of-state with her family. Zimlich credited Karabensh for positioning the foundation’s Music Programs for growth and for developing an excellent staff.

Bohemian Foundation is a private family foundation established in 2001. Based in Fort Collins, Colo., Bohemian Foundation works to empower citizens and impact communities through its responsive grant making programs and special initiatives. The Colorado Sound S9 EP27 2015

The weekend is over.  I hope you got the chance to go see some live music.

I had a very interesting conversation with one of Colorado’s native musicians yesterday, Dan Treanor, who will be my guest on Offstage Beyond the Music in August.  Now in his late sixties and still going strong, Dan has seen all of the changes of the industry here in the state since he started playing music after returning home from the Vietnam War in the early 70s.  Originally from Pueblo, he recalled bands like the Trolls and a few others I’m going to have to go try and find some recordings of.  I’ve got a couple of records from the Trolls but they don’t sound very good, so I’ve never played them on the show.  I’m honored to have Dan as my guest on the show next month.

In celebration of her 30th Anniversary of making music in Colorado, The Colorado Sound Presents Hazel Miller making her debut at the historic Mishawaka Amphitheatre along with Chris Daniels & the Kings who have also never played the Mish in their 32 yrs of making music in Colorado.  As part of the 1st anniversary of Offstage Beyond the Music, this week’s segment was from Hazel’s session a few month’s ago.

The Colorado Sound S9 EP25 JUNE 2015

Life is crazy right now.  It’s summer.  It’s concert/festival season.  I’m booked out every night of the week it seems.  This week’s show included the final episode of OFFSTAGE BEYOND THE MUSIC with June’s guest John Magnie of the Subdudes & Young Ancients.  July’s guest is Freddi Gowdy, formerly of the Freddi Henchi Band, currently performing with Chris Daniels & the Kings.

I would normally be pulling spin data yesterday thru tomorrow for the 1st of the month NEWS NOTES & SPINS column … but I have made the decision to suspend that monthly post until further notice.  There are a few reasons.

  • I lost all my data for Jan, Feb, March, and May .. so 1/3 of the year’s data is gone.
  • Fewer stations are playing enough current Colorado titles to make it worth my time to cull spins from their dj playlists.
  • Fewer Colorado titles are being played than at any time in the five years I’ve been doing the monthly charts, again making it less worth the 1 1/2 days it takes for me to build that chart.
  • And finally … I reformed my band, Goatz!, a tremendous time drain getting ready for our first show back on August 9 at the Mishawaka with Hazel Miller Band, Chris Daniels & the Kings w/ Freddi Gowdy, and my son’s band Williams Reserve.      Here’s what our band is up to as we gear up for the event …

I will be emceeing every Thursday night as part of the Bohemian Nights Thursday Night Live series in Fort Collins.  This week is The Jurassicasters, featuring Dave Beegle.
