Colorado Playlist S10 EP41 NOV 2016

kzyr-30-yr-logoSo, the big news this week = I think we’ve made Colorado radio history.  The show is now on at The Zephyr / KZYR / Vail – as of last night.  It will air every Sunday night 6PM-8PM.  That puts the show on in Aspen, Boulder, Carbondale, Colorado Springs, Denver, Durango, Fort Collins, Greeley, Longmont, Glenwood Springs, Leadville, Steamboat Springs, Telluride, Vail and Westcliffe.  I know of no other show about Colorado music that has enjoyed this kind of success.  Thank you to KZYR and all the stations that air this show … my wife Pattie (RIP) would be proud (today’s her b-day).

The big “winners” in last week’s MMMM (Monday Morning Music Meeting) were My Blue Sky and Gabrielle Louise, whose vote totals easily eclipsed all the other new adds last week … although the only song that really didn’t show well, with a 50/50 thumbs up, was Katherine Homes Wild and Free.  New adds this week from Faceman, The Drunken Hearts, Johnny Johnston and Big Gigantic.

faceman-wild-and-hunting-coverThe first new release for 2017 came in this week from the very enigmatic Faceman.  The new album, Wild and Hunting, which took two years to produce, will officially be released in February 2017 at a location tbd – and they’re building a giant terrarium to play in. . . more details to come.  The album features a special cast of characters that includes trumpeters Ron Miles, Jon Gray, and Steve Illich, trombonist David Dinsmore, saxophonist Troy Thill, pedal steel guitarist Jeff Rady, vocalists Bonnie Sims (Of Bonnie and The Clydes), Lauren Stovall (of Railspitters), and Brianna Straut (of Tomohawk Fox), and screamers Scott McCormick and Courtney Whitehead.  The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Colin Bricker, one of Colorado’s leading engineers and producers over the past decade plus, out of his studios at Mighty Fine Productions.

The lead single, Heavy Heart, features Denver legacy artist Ron Miles.

Faceman is throwing a big party at The Oriental Theater called FACEMAN‘s 100 Year Storm’.  It features 100 bands over two days (Friday November 18th and Saturday November 19th).  There will be three stages and music playing 100% of the time.  The band is working with Justin Hicks and Katie Webster of ‘Incite’ (also work as carpenters for the Denver Center Theater Company) who are building a giant tornado with cows floating around and stuff. The music covers almost every genre and will feature a few youth bands as well.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

MONDAY MORNING MUSIC MEETING

I conceived of this idea as a way for you to discover some of the new music I played on the show, and to give you the chance to let me know which of the tracks you like, and think I should keep in rotation.  I get a lot of feedback from fans about what’s liked .. and what isn’t.

In order to be included in the MMMM poll, the band/artist must have an embeddable file available on SoundCloud, BandCamp (my favorite), Reverbnation or YouTube.

It’s not a competition.  It’s just a gauge of how well you like the songs I added this week.

Colorado Playlist S10 EP40 OCT 2016

We’ve got a full slate of new music in this week’s MMMM (Monday Morning Music Meeting).  It was one hellova week for new music adds with debuts and new song adds from My Blue Sky, Angie Stevens & the Beautiful Wreck, Brent Cowles, OneRepublic, piKziL, The Drunken Hearts, Gabrielle Louise and Katherine Homes.

my-blue-skyMy Blue Sky is best known as one of the top tribute bands in the region, winner of two Leftapalooza Mile High Tribute Band Competition events, in 2014 and 2015, before deciding themselves to not participate in 2016… instead taking the time to record an album of originals and covers that demonstrate their skill at interpreting some of the most well known southern blues rock from bands like the Allman Brothers Band, Gov’t Mule, and Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie).   Their self titled debut shows they’re capable of writing jams worthy of the bands they pay tribute to. ***personal bias = I spent the 90s playing in a band that covered a LOT of ABB and Gov’t Mule***

drunken-hearts-epThe Drunken Hearts is another band shaped in the southern rock jam band tradition with a decidedly more country rock flair on “Want You Back” from their debut EP called Love & Thirst.  Other songs on the ep carry the same vibe – and there are even a couple of nods to the twin guitars you might have heard from the ABB or the Outlaws or Marshall Tucker Band …nicely produced and mixed, their harmonies and tight playing are a direct complement to the influences they most emulate.    ***same personal bias as above***

Colorado Playlist S10 EP39 OCT 2016

A couple of quick updates.  KSUT (Ignacio/Durango) is moving the show to 7PM on Saturday nights, beginning Nov 5, but will only be airing Hour 1 of the show.  You can now catch the show on 88.9FM in Steamboat Springs every Sunday morning at 10AM (Hour 1) and at 1oPM (HR 1 + 2).  No word yet if our friends in Vail will be receiving the show.

We’re pretty much at the end of the 2016 new release year.  Anything that comes out beginning this week is going to be listed as a 2017 release.  New shares this week from Chimney Choir, Sam Glover, piKziL, Chole Tang and Nadalands.  All in all an exceptional week for new music.

Coming next week I’ll have the new singles from the Taylor Scott band, Brent Cowles, Drunken Hearts and no doubt more.

One new release I’m anxious to share with you is “Speak” from Katherine Home.  It’s a folk / singer-songwriter record of the highest quality, produced by Jamie Mefford (Gregory Alan Isakov and Nathaniel Rateliff).  Katherine utilized a unique concept called the SeedCD to get the music into our hands – although, unfortunately, you can’t play a SeedCD in your car cd player.
