Colorado Playlist S10 EP24 July 2016

I got the best news of the summer recently, when my friends at 105.5 The Colorado Sound let me know just how popular the Colorado Playlist is in Denver on Sundays.  WOW… It’s not a far off dream to imagine making it into the TOP 10 for the hours the show is on the air in the Denver metro! (if i even dared dream of top 5 i’d be afraid of squashing the whole thing lol).

I’m also stoked as hell to now be on the air every Saturday morning from 6AM-NOON on 105.5 … “the fastest growing noncom in the nation.”  You won’t get a lot of Colorado stuff on this shift – this is all about music discovery – local and national and international.

New music in this week’s Monday Morning Music Meeting from Edison, Safe Boating is No Accident and the Patti Fiasco … see below.

The Mishawaka unveiled big news this week.

The Mishawaka Amphitheatre will add to its ongoing 100th anniversary activities by hosting a party and public ceremony on August 21. The festivities will include the ceremonial reveal of a commemorative display that will find a fixed home in the venue’s dance hall. Community-sourced and curated items that honor the historic venue’s past will be shared with the public, creating the foundation for an ongoing exhibit that continues to tell the story of The Mish.

Fans and friends of The Mish are invited to the open house, which will take place from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on August 21, and will feature the exhibit unveiling and a live music ensemble performance via Classic Revolution Northern Colorado. Beverages and snacks will be provided.

The public is invited to contribute to the Mishawaka Amphitheatre display; those with artifacts or memorabilia to share are encouraged to contact info@themishawaka.com.

I conceived of this idea as a way for you to discover some of the new music I played on the show, and to give you the chance to let me know which of the tracks you like, and think I should keep in rotation.  I get a lot of feedback from fans about what’s liked .. and what isn’t.

Colorado Playlist S10 EP23 JULY 2016

Happy 4th of July.  There is no Monday Morning Music Meeting (MMMM) this week.  I debuted two new tracks this week, The Rifters “I Got News for You,” and “Drug of Choice,” from Dechen Hawk.  We’ll hear more from each over the coming episodes, I’m sure.  There is also no new video this week.

SUPPORT LIVE MUSICMONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY!  MONNNEY! – So the O’Jays sang in the song “For the Love of Money,” back in the 70’s, although what they were singing about was the often depraved nature of mankind .. not the desire to earn a reasonable rate for a provided service.

I’ve now spent virtually my entire life hearing one common refrain among nearly all musicians (performers and songwriters) who are not nationally or internationally recognized — that our services are undervalued, and underpaid for.  Today, increasingly we’re hearing the same from nationally recognized performers and songwriters as well as from the local scene.

I won’t wax heavily here, but this issue is top of mind with me as I am among those regionally who write checks to musicians, and gets paid for performing music.

For many people, music has become as free as the air we breathe.  I cannot say as free as the water we drink, because we actually pay for the water we drink.  Is a music performance or a recording any less valuable that we expect others to pay for it while we enjoy it free of charge?

During these remaining summer months, we will get to experience many “free” events — downtown concert series, festivals with free admission, and more.  We get to stream ad supported interactive and non-interactive Internet radio for free … and it costs nothing to turn on the car radio.  Several restaurants and bars (inc breweries, distilleries, etc) provide “free” entertainment.

While we’re enjoying all this “FREE” music, it would be nice if we remembered that it is not free to record, and it’s not free to produce on stage.   Your support is appreciated … BUY MERCH — TIPS ARE WELCOME …

Colorado Playlist – S10 EP22 June 2016

As July approaches, I am getting increasingly excited for what’s on the way.  Here’s a great list of local/regional festivals – some of which feature Colorado talent significantly.  Looking forward particularly to Bohemian Nights at New West Fest in August – the first time in 12 years it’s been ALL Colorado.  YAY!  <goat jig>.

This column is late today because I just spent 90 minutes on the phone being interviewed for an upcoming Denver Post article … looking fwd to that .. coming I believe in the first week of July .. be on the watch for that.

New music this week is from previously debuted albums by Joseph Tonelli,  Bonnie & the Clydes, Pete Pidgeon and Arcoda, and the Motet.

Coming soon, new music from Durango’s Cannondolls, Magic Music (formed in the early 70s and just now getting around to an album), the Rifters out of Alamosa and northern NM, and Dechen Hawk’s Jus’ Sayin’ .

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

Chris Daniels is among our more valued musical treasures.  Here he is in an episode of eTown – another jewel in our musical landscape.  “Eldorado Canyon” is where the band Magic Music lived in the early ’70s, in an ice cream truck and a school bus.  Coming soon – the first ever Magic Music album — 40 years in the making.
