The Colorado Sound S8 EP11 March 2014

BN NWF 2012 GOAT ON STAGEWhat a week.  I did two events yesterday – I emceed the CHUN PEOPLE’S FAIR/UMX in Denver from 9-5 and then up to Lyons to do sound for Meniskus.  They played a benefit for the St Vrain trail system that got destroyed in the flood.  I got home about 1AM this morning … LOL.  I don’t remember the rest of the week.  Truth be told, I’m perfectly exhausted, and the furnace in my house went out yesterday, so I came home to an ice-box … three layers of sweats and extra blankets was enough to keep me warm.  That’s it – I’m taking a day off to sleep today.

The biggest surprise of the week for me musically is the duet with Sara Evans and Isaac Slade (the Fray).  I wasn’t looking for it actually.  I was trying to determine “compliments to” for a female fronted band who are clients of mine, and I thought maybe Sara might be a good compliment.  Turns out she has a new album, with a new duet from our Denver hitmaker.  NICE 🙂  Check it out below.

The Colorado Sound S8 EP10 March 2014

boninwf back stage nite 1 2012(Sunday March 16) If you had a vocation for doing one thing and one thing only to enrich your life, and provide an income, what would it be?  We have a lot of folks in Colorado who have a glorious vocational appetite and aptitude for giving us great music, whether live, and/or studio, and/or video.  A little bit of this music makes its way to other parts of the country, and even the world.  And every once in a while we get a star breaking out, bringing some light to what we have in our backyard.  But what if we don’t recognize that star as being from our neighborhood?  Then what?

I am a huge believer in thinking globally, but acting locally.    We have a wealth of media here in Colorado that are out in front representing what’s happening locally.  We have public television programs that feature Colorado video and live performances.  There are over 20 radio stations that not only play the hits from Colorado, but also the unknown and as yet discovered.  And, there are numerous print and internet publications that put a focus on local music and all the various and related activities that involve locally produced music.

We in the media cannot do the job of raising public awareness alone.  Media needs the artist as much as the artist needs media, to represent and promote for each other.  Whether a musician or a fan, if we’re going to get folks to know who’s who and what they do and raise awareness of Colorado music, we need each other to spread the word.  We in the media really cannot do that job alone; we need you too.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

The winner of the 2013 Video Pick of the Year went to Andy Palmer and Tage Plantell for their video from Andy’s album Hazard of the Die.  Tage got hold of me this week to share this new video.  It’s from a relative newcomer to our scene, Marti Christopher, who comes to us from Toronto, Canada.  He plays all the instruments, and is self produced.

Welcome KBCO Local Edition

The state of music in Colorado is excellent. Do not let anyone convince you otherwise.  More and more stations are signing on, and more and more events are popping up all over the state.  Recently, I reached out to KBCO (Boulder) to determine what local releases they were airing either as part of their regular programming, or in a specialty show.  Turns out, Margie McArdle is the girl.  She hosts the KBCO Local Edition every Sunday night from 10-10:30PM.  Okay – so it’s only a half hour – or about 6 songs.  I’ll take it.  This is what Margie has been playing the past few weeks on her show.

In her email to me, she expressed an avid interest in getting more QUALITY Colorado records — send cds, not digital files.
