I’ve been thinking about that very subject lately … how some people simply just get “old.” I’m one of those who said to myself as a teenager that I would never old. Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats sure help me out by laying down a groove reminiscent of my childhood, listening to the likes of Otis Taylor and Wilson Pickett among the legends.
Nathaniel likes to remind me that he and I met when we both appeared on a singer songwriter bill with the Late Jack Redell many years ago. I don’t remember the event, but he does LOL A sign of me getting old maybe? Hmmm. I sure hope not, because as the song goes, “I Need Never Get Old.”
Nathaniel has never ceased to amaze me with his diverse range musically and vocally. He’s gone from being in the highly popular indie/new alternative rock band Born in the Flood to international touring folk artist on Rounder records, to his latest incarnation as southern-soul savant leading the Nightsweats – something he never really saw himself as until it actually happened a couple of years ago.
The new full length is due out later this summer on the legendary Stax Records (Otis Redding. Booker T. & the M.G.’s.) and is produced by the Shins’ Richard Swift, who also worked on the latest from fellow Denverites, Tennis.
Obviously you’ll hear it on the show as soon as the record company gets me a copy .. for sure.
