News Notes & Spins – APRIL 1 2012

Happy Spring.  As I sit and write today we’re expecting record setting temps along the Front Range.  And as I sit and review the adds and spins for the month it appears we’ve had a record setting month.  The Lumineers self-titled debut on Dualtone Records was added by more stations (commercial and non-comm) than I’ve seen the past couple of years,  aside from much more well established and nationally popular acts like DeVotchKa, landing the debut far in front of the pack in scoring.  I fully expect that The Lumineers release will rise up quickly on the national CMJ charts that measure non-comm and college radio, where the new Tennis release, Young & Old, has held onto TOP 3 positions the past couple of weeks.

I’m often asked how many Colorado albums a year are produced and distributed to radio.  Going back through the past couple of years worth of charts, it appears I’ve tracked about 340 or so album titles during any given 12-14 month period, of which approximately 45-50% receive any measurable airplay monthly.  I estimate there are over 500 records a year coming from Colorado bands today, whether produced here or elsewhere.

I do have to point out that there are some severely underrepresented styles of music on the list of releases, including most forms of Loud Music (metal, punk, etc), hip-hop/rap, and pop-country.  It’s not that the music isn’t being recorded, nor is it that we lack that music in our live music scene.  Quite frankly these are highly popular styles that just don’t seem to grab the attention of the independent djs and programmers that make up the bulk of those who appear on air at the community and public radio stations I cull the spin data from.

I highly recommend paying attention to Westword and HeyReverb, as both those media outlets do an excellent job of exposing all of us to those styles we may not hear on the airwaves around the state.  And yes, I too wish for greater inclusion of all styles of music in radio and at the numerous music festivals regionally.  It is a common topic of conversation among those of us engaged in music festivals and radio around the state.

Re live music … I came across an article in Westword this past couple of weeks that’s worth mentioning … WESTAF introduces Independent Music on Tour, a grant program for local musicians.

Re radio news … KDNK (Carbondale) has a new Underwriter Director: Jen Roeser    …and KBUT (Crested Butte) is starting a new segment titled “Artistically Speaking” that will highlight cultural and art events from Gunnison to Crested Butte.  The segment is brought to KBUT by the Arts Alliance, and will air M, W, and F at 10 AM.

Speaking of radio — I’ve added a new feature this month.  Following the station by station breakdown, I’ve provided a Genre/Program Format breakdown that encompasses the major genres and/or radio program formats i.e.
Americana
Blues
Bluegrass
Folk
Funk/Hip Hop/Urban Contemporary
Indie/New-Alternative
Jazz
Pop/Adult Contemporary
Rock/Adult Alternative.

KVNF wins big with the Association for Independents in Radio

KVNF has been selected as one of 10 stations in the country to be tapped for the “Localore” project.

Paonia, CO: Localore is a $2 million initiative produced by Boston-based AIR, the Association of Independents in Radio. More than $1 million in funding will support 10 station-based innovation teams for up to one year. The teams are tasked with bringing their ingenuity to blend digital and broadcast technology, and invent new forms of storytelling that will appeal beyond public broadcasting’s traditional core audience. KVNF was selected, along with KALW San Francisco, KCRW Los Angeles, KQED San Francisco, KUT Austin, WBEZ Chicago, WGBH Boston, WYSO Dayton, Prairie Public Broadcasting Fargo, and Twin Cities Public Television Minneapolis.

Julia Kumari Drapkin, a multi -media producer from New Orleans, will spend 12 months leading and producing her project “iseechange.” Bringing together public radio, a mobile documentary unit, and a custom crowdsourcing multi-media platform, Drapkin seeks to engage residents of the North Fork region in a conversation about how they see change through the course of a year – season to season. Based in the KVNF building, but having a robust field component to the project, “iseechange” will serve as a central access point to collect observations, organize conversation threads, and report stories.

KVNF listeners will enjoy regularly produced short segments on the airwaves and posted on http://www.kvnf.org. At the end of each season, Drapkin will create a final, highly produced multi-media documentary that summarizes the conversation that took place in sound, image, and online.

Upon notification of this prestigious effort, Sally Kane, KVNF’s General Manager said, “We are honored to have been selected in this highly competitive process. Julia Kumari Drapkin’s “iseechange” project will be a source of inspiration to our listeners as well as our professional staff as we continue to strive to be a source of quality community-based journalism in the region.”

Mountain Grown Community Radio KVNF provides non-commercial, people powered radio programming for 10,000 square miles of the Western Slope since 1979. More information can be found at:  http://www.kvnf.org

News Notes & Spins – December 1, 2011

This is the last monthly spins column and chart for 2011 … the next one I’ll publish will be the Year End Spins and Best of charts.

The Colorado Sound lost a station up in Summit County.  Got word that KMPB (Mountain Public Radio) has been sold to KUNC.  KMPB is no longer on the air as it was.  Thanks to the staff and to Murray for airing the program the past few years.   I would expect to see KMPB simulcasting KUNC’s mix of news/talk and music.

KBUT General Manager Ryan Stringfellow & his wife Valerie welcomed their baby girl Scout Lane Stringfellow to the world on November 18th. She weighed 6 pounds and was 18 inches long at birth.  Congrats to the new parents.

One last thing here … We’ve got til Dec 20 to vote for and compile the Best of 2011.  If you’ve been a fan of the show this year – if you’re a dj – a booking agent – anyone who has more than a passing interest in Colorado music AND you can provide a list of your TOP 20 favorites of 2011 (no fewer than 10 pls – any self respecting local music fan has at least a dozen favorites, right?) … hit me back at thecoloradosound@gmail.com … you can vote for any album with a release date of Nov 1 2010 t0 Oct 31 2011.

Ok, that’s it .. onto the real stuff – the spins charts .. and welcome OpenAir 1340 … music director Jessi Whitten has her hands full it seems.  She let me know when I spoke with her that they’ve received a ton of Colorado stuff they have to go through.
