Colorado Playlist – BEST OF 2017

Every year I look at what Colorado music is getting plays at stations around the state.  I get feedback from music and program directors, and djs – along with others in the scene and YOU – to come up with what I think is the SOME of the best of the Colorado Playlist for the year.

2017 was a great year for the Colorado Playlist, finishing up 11 years on the air. Thanks to the network of incredible stations that broadcast the show statewide across some 23 FM frequencies… making it the MOST HEARD Colorado music show in Colorado radio history (see list of stations, frequencies and times ) and to our charter supporters – the Historic Mishawaka Amphitheatre and Oskar Blues, without whom this show would not be possible.

It is always my hope that you discover a new personal favorite from here at home. Over the years we’ve seen some incredible talent rise up out of our state.  It seems like it happens every year now.

FAN POLL 2017 TOP 10

Our Fan Poll this year was wild.  There were 120 titles to vote on this year, an increase of 40 titles from 2016.  Fans of TiffanyChristopher and Pint & A Half aka Duke and Tami Sheppard waged a pretty fun battle to see who was going to rally.  Pint & A Half’s fans came out on top.

An interesting takeaway was the number of bluegrass and folk inspired bands that rolled up into the TOP 10 of Fan Favs … 5 of the TOP 10 … enjoy.

BEST OF 2017

HOUR 1

Francis and the Wolf “Call of the Wild” from Ladies & Gentlemen (2017) — Recommended if you like Springsteen or the late Tom Petty.  Based out of the Boulder/Longmont area, this band broke on the scene in a big way leading up to Bolder Boulder last spring.  Expect a new album out in 2018 – hopefully in time for the summer festival season.

Slow Caves “Glares” from Desert Minded (2016) They call themselves synth-punk.  If they had come out in 1981 they would have been called New Wave.  The band got signed to an indie deal with  Cincinnati-based Old Flame Records, performed at Boise’s lauded, Treefort Festival and Austins’ SXSW, and released their Old Flame debut Desert Minded-EP on March 10, 2017.

My Blue Sky “Kick off Them Shoes” from My Blue Sky (2017) – I’m going to have to admit to a certain artistic bias here. MBS is known as the state’s #1 Allman Brothers tribute band.  Gregg Allman‘s final album, Southern Blood is my pick for Album of the Year (outside of Colorado).  The band backed the likes of the iconic blues artist Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie), as well as  Joe Bonamassa, Tommy Castro, Dany Franchi, and Kara Grainger in 2017!

The Hustle Kings “For What It’s Worth (Again)” from Stand Up (Let Love Be Your Guide) (2017) – This song is a personal pick for BEST of 2017.  This new version, that features the production and harmonica of Colorado award winning blues artist Dan Treanor is a testament to the idea of timelessness – a song as politically potent today as it was in 1968.

Grant Sabin & the Juke Joint Highball “Homesick” from Bourbon & Milk (2017) For Bourbon & Milk, Colorado Springs bluesman, a protege of the late John-Alex Mason, enlists the aid of Southern Colorado Americana/country-folk singer-songwriter Joe Johnson on rhythm guitar and Kevin Ott on drums to produce what is undoubtedly one of the best blues albums of 2017.

Cary Morin “Laid Back” from Cradle to the Grave (2017) Cradle to the Grave is the final episode in a string of acoustic folk-blues releases over the past several years by longtime Fort Collins music icon Cary Morin and one that has garnered him considerable praise across the country, as he spent what seems like most of the year on the road.  Expect a FULL BAND (read: electric) record from Cary in 2018.

Otis Taylor “Twelve String Mile” from Fantasizing About Being Black (2017) There’s not much I can say about Otis that hasn’t been said a gazillion times.  He is a Colorado legacy artist, and one of the most prolific over the past twenty years.  On his latest he continues to advance what he calls trance-blues – and continues to reflect on the trauma of being black – from the past to the present.

Flobots “Carousel” from No Enemies (2017) Flobots have never shied away from political activism and on No Enemies they espouse a world view that is as much about community as it is the issues that divide us.  Stripped down to a much tighter rap-rock production, the album also features Denver’s gospel singers Spirit of Grace, and community youth group the 303 Choir.

Andy Palmer “Black Moses (Harriet Tubman)” from The Switch (2017) – Andy Palmer is a heavy weight who displays a subtle touch of austerity on his third full length – co-written with Amberly Chalberg.  On The Switch Andy seems to reach to the past and folk icons like Woody Guthrie and Greenwich Village activist Dave Van Ronk, not in style, but in substance – as Andy continues to reflect on justice and injustice and calls up the spirit of Harriet Tubman among others.

Trout Steak Revival “Spirit” from Spirit to the Sea (2017) On their fourth release over the past eight years the Emmy Award winning and Westword Bluegrass Band of 2017 rips with articulate and virtuoso artistry, turning their bluegrass roots towards more mystical coloring, exemplified by the stunning album cover and songs like Spirit, with each of the five members taking a turn on vocals throughout the album.

The Railsplitters “Everyone She Meets” from Jump In (2017) The Railsplitters are destroying what it means to be bluegrass – investing themselves in directions that strangle the traditional and hug the inevitable evolution of the style. Vocalist Lauren Stovall is enticing, a siren encouraging us to “jump in” and be enveloped by instruments focused on where the style is leading us … far away from its origins.

Keith Oxman “A Vaunt Guard” from East of the Village (2017) – Due to its spontaneity I’ve always found jazz to best be enjoyed in an intimate setting in a small room with a good Malbec. On his ninth album for the Colorado based Capri Jazz, tenor saxophonist Keith Oxman directs a soulful organ based trio featuring Jeff Jenkins (B3) and Todd Reid (drums) … on a record where six of the ten tracks are first takes – a feat in itself.

HOUR 2

Great American Taxi “We Can Run” from Dr. Feelgood’s Traveling Medicine Show (2017). Being a taxi, GAT has had one driver (Chad Staehly) and several passengers including original founding member Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth), Todd Snider and others. On this latest effort, produced by Tim Carbone, the lineup includes Coloradoan Arthur Lee Land on guitars and vocals.

Kyle Emerson “Post-Egomania” from Dorothy Alice (2017) Nostalgic retro-based music doesn’t always work.  Too often it appears as a thin shadow of the core influences it’s drawn from.  Exceptions in Colorado over the years have included the Apples In Stereo early albums shaped after Pet Sounds era Beach Boys.  Enter Kyle Emerson who shows us the depths of the influences he draws on, without being mundane.

Petals of Spain “Daydream” from Daydream (2017) Petals of Spain has proven to be one of the most enigmatic outfits in our scene over the past several years.  They have no website, only one review written about them since 2013 and they don’t seem to be an active live performance band – nonetheless they brought forth one of the most lushly produced and musically sophisticated pop records of 2017.

The Still Tide “High Wire” from Run Out EP (2017) The Still Tide put out one of my TOP 5 favorite releases of 2017, based on the number of times I put a song in the show, and the rotation of Colorado releases played in my convertible sports car as I cruised around the twists and turns in the mountains this past summer.  Engineer/drummer Joe Richmond’s (Churchill, Tennis, Brent Cowles) rhythms and production along with Jacob Miller‘s guitar and Nate Meese’s consistent bass playing works in bringing out a luminous quality in multi-instrumentalist Anna Morsett‘s singing and songwriting.

Face Vocal  Band “Back and Forth” from Big Time EP (2017) – When a band sells 7000 seats at Red Rocks on a Sunday (Aug 6), with no outside promotion, a day after performing a free festival event in the market – then proceeds to set a Red Rocks record for most albums sold by a single band at a single show – and THEN donates OVER $30,000 to Colorado public schools for music education – damned well straight they make my BEST of Colorado 2017.  #micdrop

A.J. Fullerton “Oh, Frustration” from Kalamath (2017) At the 2017 Colorado Blues Society  “Members’ Choice Awards” A.J. won an unprecedented 8 awards for:  Best Guitarist – Best Solo/Duo – Best Band – Best Male Vocals – Best Slide Guitar – Best Songwriter – Best Acoustic Act – Best Local Recording (“Kalamath”) .. ADD Best of the Colorado Playlist 2017.  A.J. is as much one of our top blues players as he is one of our most outstanding up and coming singer-songwriters.

Tiffany Christopher “Somewhere Behind the Sun” from Tremendous Heart (2017) #2 Fan Poll Favorite 2017 (see above)

Pint & A Half “Drive Drive Drive” from Boomtown Ghosts (2017) #1 Fan Poll Favorite 2017 (see above)

Brent Cowles “Lift Me Up (Leave Me Here)” from Cold Times (2017) I don’t think I’m going too far out on a limb to say I think Colorado Springs native Brent Cowles (pronounced Coals) is well on his way to being as much a household name among Colorado music fans as Nathaniel Rateliff or the Lumineers.  Working with members of the Still Tide on his debut, and on stage, Brent got signed to Dine Alone Records, (Dashboard Confessional,  Jimmy Eat World) and came out with one of the most invigorating singalong releases of the year.

Gasoline Lollipops “Love is Free” from Resurrection (2016) Gasoline Lollipops has been one of the most celebrated and talked about up and coming bands in our region during 2017 – performing at Red Rocks, and embarking on their first European tour, while raising funds and recording and releasing a 2018 album in December (Soul Mine).  Resurrection received copious spins at radio around the state – but no more than what they received thanks to stations like KRFC (Fort Collins) and 105.5 The Colorado Sound (NoCO).

Chris Daniels & the Kings “Sweet Memphis” from Blues With Horns, Vol. 1 (2017) Blues With Horns, Vol 1 is the third album by Chris Daniels (Colorado Music Hall of Fame) & the Kings featuring former Freddi Henchi Band founding member Freddi “Love” Gowdy.  The album also features former Estes Park resident Sonny Landreth on slide guitar and John Magnie (Subdudes) on keyboards.

I’ve been playing Chris’ records on various radio stations in NoCO for as long as I can remember going back to the late 80s. This is, by far, the highest charting record of the band’s illustrious career since launching in the early 80s.  National Contemporary Roots Music Report Top 50 Radio Singles Chart “Sweet Memphis” # 1 (October 14) …

Big Head Todd & The Monsters “Damaged One” from New World Arisin’ (2017) ALBUM OF THE YEAR – I’ve been a BHTM album fan since their self released 1989 “Another Mayberry.”  Over the years the band has slipped around various styles, best evidenced by their blues releases as Big Head Blues Club, and albums like Black Beehive and Rocksteady where they toyed with reggae, pop and soul grooves.

If any of us were expecting more of the same from one of Colorado’s most legendary legacy bands we were in store for a HUGE surprise, as the band dove straight down to the depths of their loudest, most raucous rock album of their 30+ year career …an album they teased us with one single at a time for a year before dropping a ten ton load of Boulder rock on us all at once late in 2017 – good thing too cuz I don’t think we could have withstood the crush all at one time.

Garrett Sayers Trio “Diatribe” from Thinkbox (2017) Jazz means different things to different ears.  In the case of the Garrett Sayers Trio, it’s a trip into funk, hip-hop and electronica with an overflowing abundance of intricate arrangements.  The genre bending arrangements, sans any vocals, is at once as accessible as it is mind boggling – a delightful listen – especially late at night when deep thought and introspection is a desired exercise.

NEWS NOTES and SPINS MAY 1 2015

Goat_Logo_color_on_whiteI’m approached daily by musicians seeking answers to the mysteries of our industry.  I’m proud to say we live in a state where information and resources are bountiful.

I attended four events in the past month that served no other purpose than to educate, develop, and promote all that is Colorado music, those who make it, and those who work on advancing it; the Denver Music Summit, FOCOMX, the Colorado Blues Society IBC finals, and the induction of six new bands into Spokesbuzz. Of course they’re not the only organizations or events designed for these purposes, but I was fortunate to attend events put on by all four.

Ultimately it is the fan, the audience, the listener, who is the deciding factor when it comes to how well we in the “business” are doing our jobs – and therefore it is important to have that perspective at the table when we’re talking about making music and getting it “out there.”  Audience participation is appreciated.   Please go visit those organizations online and find out what we have going on regionally.

Congratulations to new Spokebuzz bands:  American BlackoutThe BurroughsChemistry ClubGrim & DarlingRed Fox Run and Slow Caves.  They join EldrenGasoline LollipopsiZCALLiPandas & PeopleQbala, and Wiredogs, who are all in the second year of the two year incubation program.  Grant FarmMaxwell HughesShatterproofWasteland HopWinchester Holiday and The Yawpers all completed their program and have graduated.

NEW MUSIC in APRIL

Cracker - Berkley to BakersfieldCracker has been added and identified as (CC) for the purposes of tracking Colorado music.  Band co-founder Johnny Hickman is a local guy and has been for many years now.  In a conversation with his wife recently I learned that she used to listen to me on the air at 96.1 K-SKY in the late 80s when she was in high school.  I totally cracked up.

Also, I’ve added and tracked other artists who I’ve identified with a (CC) tag, namely Sara Cahoone, John Oates, Bill Frissel, Tia Fuller and others so I have no idea why it’s taken me so long to put Cracker in the mix.  Cracker’s latest Berkeley To Bakersfield came out last fall.  The band itself seems to be picking up some love among other local music supporters around the state … Cracker is making a few appearances locally this summer for you to keep your eyes open for.

John CommonWendy Woo BandEsme Patterson, The RailsplittersNatalie WalkerThe Raven and the Writing DeskMichael KirkpatrickRagged Unionand Clouds & Mountains all cracked the TOP 40 for the first time in April.

I suspect that we’ll see Wendy Woo, the Railsplitters, and Ragged Union stick around on the charts the longest.  Wendy is broadly known around the state, and does a great job of getting her work to interested djs.  The Railsplitters and Ragged Union are bluegrass bands of note in the state, and there is no shortage of independent djs who do favor Colorado bluegrass and Americana releases.

NEWS NOTES and SPINS APRIL 1 2015

Happy Birthday Desktop BackgroundMarch marked the 5th birthday of this blog (March 2010).  April marks the 9th birthday for The Colorado Sound (April 2006 / KRFC) and the 3rd birthday for The Colorado Sound Live365 (April 2012).

March, like Feb and Jan, hit historical highs for page views for the month.  March also hit historic lows for the number of spins statewide for Colorado music, and the lowest number of stations spinning 10 or more titles since I began keeping track, nearly seven years ago now.  I really struggled with  that.  March also registered the lowest number of hours listened to The Colorado Sound Live365, and the fewest number of people streaming the station.

Tracking spins is always challenging.  Several of the smallest stations have no way of measuring or determining what titles they play.  Most of the time there’s no central accounting system in place and there can be over 100 individuals on the air in any given month.  Even some influential stations in the state have no effective means of tracking spins.  That alone presents some interesting challenges, especially if those stations stream online, but that’s an entirely different set of problems best left undiscussed here.

Only seven of the fifteen stations surveyed managed to air ten “currents”  (titles up to 18 months old).  And the difference in the number of over- the-air “exposures” (spins per station x number of station frequencies x number of stations) between the top of the charts and the rest was significant enough for me to tell you about it.

That we had what I think is at or near an historic number of debuts (13) this month is due also, I believe, to the low number of titles being played per station in March.  The number of titles tracked also fell to 187, the first time that number has fallen beneath 200 in over 3 years – although the total number of titles aired is about normal for the month at 108.

bill frisell_guitar in the space ageBill Frisell‘s wonderful “Guitar In the Space Age” rocked the top spot for the 3rd consecutive month, out blasting the stellar new albums by heavyweights like Chris Daniels & the Kings who continued their assault on  the top position for a second month, and the new Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield, Poco) release, “Hand in Hand,” that debuts at #6 this month.  Jeff Austin manages to jump to #3 with “The Simple Truth,” remaining in the TOP 5 for the second month since his January release.  Hot Rize also holds onto TOP 5 status since being released last September, a tremendous accomplishment to be fair.

Cracker made  the cut for  VIDEO PICKS OF THE MONTH with California Country Boy (sung by Johnny Hickman) shot as part of the Gondola Sessions at Aspen/Snowmass.  Cracker is David Lowry and Johnny Hickman.  Johnny Hickman lives in Northern Colorado.  He also plays in the Hickman-Dalton Gang with Colorado native picker Jim Dalton, and has maintained a solo project with musicians here in the area.  He has also been very involved with working with and supporting other Colorado acts, such as the Yawpers for whom he produced  the single “Faith and Good Judgement” (SpokesBUZZ Vol. V). And fortunately for all of us here, we’re seeing the band play more here in Colorado.  They just played the Moxi in Greeley recently, and will be appearing at the Mishawaka on June 6 as well as other dates regionally later in the summer.  In the least, Cracker is considered to have a Colorado Connection (CC).

NEWS & NOTES

2015 kicked off in grand fashion. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Poco, Firefall, and Stephen Stills’ Manassas were inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, and  Colorado Public Radio’s Open Air 1340 AM became Open Air 102.3FM.

30 titles added / 12 debuts charted … I think that’s a record for one month, but don’t quote me on that.  It’s a lot though.

KRFC (Fort Collins) announced the hiring of Charles Hale as new program director. Charles is a KCSU alumnus and in addition to serving on the board of directors he has been a KRFC programmer since 2013, hosting “The Ajax Diner Book Club” Monday nights at 8PM.

The Colorado Sound radio program began its 9th season; the ColoradoSound.com its 6th, and The Colorado Sound Live365 began its 3rd.  The Colorado Sound Live365 posted its best month since last June.  TheColoradoSound.com posted its best non-December month in history.

I became a member of the board of directors for SpokesBUZZ, a tremendous honor for me.

Offstage …Beyond the Music started off the new year with Colorado Music Hall of Fame executive director G. Brown – noted former Denver Post music  critic, KCUV radio personality, Colorado music historian and author of “Colorado Rocks: A Half Century of Music in Colorado” (Pruitt Publishing, Aug 2004).  A newly revised edition will be (according to G) published this spring to coincide with the grand opening of the new location of the HoF at the Trading Post at Red Rocks.    February’s featured guest is Wendy Woo and her husband Charles Snyder.

VIDEO PICKS OF THE MONTH

All I can say is THANK YOU to the “bootleggers” in the audience at the CMHOF inductions who had decent camera gear.  I heard that the official CMHoF video will be forthcoming soon – but for now, the first five videos are from Poco’s performance at the Hall of Fame induction.  Also included this month:  Young Ancients, Ryan Chrys & the Roughcuts, Danielle Ate the Sandwich, Mama Lenny & the Remedy, Eldren, American Blackout, The Sound and Color, Archive Nights.

(D) 1. Bill Frisell Guitar In the Space Age (Okeh Records) Instrumental/rock/pop/country [18-Nov-14]
This wasn’t even close.  This is the first time I can recall where an instrumental record debuts atop the monthly spins chart, and it did it by a landslide in number of stations playing, and the total number of spins, and frequencies it’s heard on.  If you listen to public/community/NPR radio anywhere in the state, you hear this record.  It is the most accessible and pop based of all of Frisell’s recordings.

The Colorado Sound 2014

Here ya go …you can listen to the TOP 20 recap of the year while you’re reading.  I also broke it down into 5 song segments below if you’re prefer that.

Goat_Logo_color_on_whiteI had a hellova year.  I hope you did too.  Courtesy of KUNC, the Colorado Sound is now on an additional 20 FM frequencies around the state, bringing the total up to 45 hours a week of programming across 33 frequencies.  Check out the stations and times page so you know where to tune in on when you’re up skiing.

Thanks to both KUNC and Radio 94.9 Colorado I had the incredible pleasure this year to sit down and have chats with Chris Daniels, Dave Glasser, Eddie Turner, Richie Furay, and Reed Foehl for the new podcast series Offstage …Beyond the Music.  Coming up the week of Jan 3-9 to start off the new year, Colorado Music Hall of Fame executive director G Brown will be my guest – talking about the Colorado Music Hall of Fame and his books.

colorado rocksG holds the franchise on Colorado music history.  The former Denver Post music journalist is the author of “Colorado Rocks: A Half-Century of Music In Colorado,” and “Telluride Bluegrass Festival – The First Forty telluride-bg-fest-40-book-1_1024x1024Years.”  His life work, when it’s done, will be his history of Red Rocks.  “Colorado Rocks” has been updated for a re-release when the Colorado Music Hall of Fame opens up at the Trading Post at Red Rocks in 2015.

Speaking of …congratulations to the Colorado Music Hall of Fame class of 2014:  the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Manassas, Poco, Firefall, Richie Furay, and Steve Martin who will all be inducted on Jan 9, 2015 at the Paramount in Denver.

I started this blog to celebrate Colorado music and the stations that support it.  I can’t say enough about the incredible network of stations I track each month.  The number of stations airing Colorado music today in any measure is unprecedented.  The volume of Colorado music aired each month is pretty mind-blowing.  On average, of some 300 titles I track each month, about 45-46% get aired at least once in a month, by at least one station.

When you look below at the STATION BY STATION breakout, one station stands out by the number of titles aired ..not only for the year, but month in and month out, consistently over the past two to three years now.  When KRFC music director Scott Foley sent out the station’s most played titles for 2014, 60% were Colorado titles.  I have been a part of many discussions throughout the years where someone has said that radio should play “local music.”  KRFC is living up to the dream.

One of the greatest joys for me in 2014 was emceeing the 10th Annual Bohemian Nights at New West Fest, and fronting for the likes of Big Head Todd & the Monsters, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legend Richie Furay, who I also got to host at the 8th Annual Carbon Valley Music & Spirits Festival to go with the Samples.  All in all, it was one of my most satisfying concert seasons.  Thanks especially to my friends at CHUN (Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods) in Denver for the 10 years I represented them at the annual People’s Fair, and to the Fort Collins Downtown Business Association for the opportunity to host their stages in 2014.

As the year wound down I also received an incredible invitation to join the board of directors for SpokesBUZZ.  I am very excited for the opportunity to help so many great acts work towards realizing their own dreams in this crazy music thing we do…

I owe a huge thank you to some very special people without whom this show, and the accompanying Live365 station, and Offstage …Beyond the Music would not be here today.  First, thanks to Steve Law DDS and Denver area musician, for his contribution last winter that kept The Colorado Sound Live365 on the air for the few months I needed some funding.

Thanks to my friend Chuck Grewe, who once shared the stage with me in a band in the 90s, and his brother Bill.  They own Colorado Case Company.  And a very special thank you to Dani Grant and her husband Matt Hoven, owners of the Mishawaka Amphitheatre and Chippers Lanes, respectively.  Dani is also the founder and driving force behind SpokesBUZZ.  To each of my incredible friends – thank you.

BEST RE-ISSUE(s) 2014

zephyr, box set 2014 Before I can even get to the charts I have to acknowledge two records I got my hands on this year that are at the TOP of my THANK YOU list for the year:  Zephyr/The Deluxe Edition “box set” that includes both the original 1969 Zephyr album remastered + select live cuts, rehearsals and more

…and as a gift from both Eddie Turner, and subsequently a remastered version from David Givens, I got two copies Zephyr, Heartbeatof Zephyr/Heartbeat that came out originally in 1982, and was stuffed into basements when bandleader Candy Givens died in 1984.

Eddie gifted me with original vinyl that I had cleaned up and digitized by Kevin Clock at Colorado Sound Studios.  Kevin was the engineer on the record originally.  Thanks to David for an advance of a newly remastered version that he suggested may be reissued in 2015.

I believe David has plans to reissue the entire Zephyr collection, including what many think of as the best album from Zephyr, “Sunset Ride.”  Personally, I put “Heartbeat” at the top of the list, but to each his own: both albums have considerable charm, shaped less by Candy’s stylistic changes than the two guitarists who shaped the music Candy sang over, Jock Bartley (Firefall) on “Sunset Ride,” and Eddie Turner on “Heartbeat.”  “Sunset Ride” is decidedly jazzier, while “Heartbeat” has a bit more of the new-wave sound that was emanating from the early 80s.

One great band – three great guitarists – Tommy Bolin, Jock Bartley, Eddie Turner.   No doubt slated for future induction into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

TOP 20 FAN FAVORITE TITLES 2014

The one thing about fan favorite polls is that an act’s fans really want you to pay attention to what they like – so they rally around their “candidate.”  Sometimes, bands don’t know these polls are even taking place, and at other times they don’t care about polls so they don’t tell their fans.  Regardless of all of that, these bands’ fans came out and threw down to see their favorite win the Fan Favorite prize of 2014.  This year fans voted for 85 unique titles.  Here are the top 20.

AN HOUR OF MY FAVORITE VIDEOS

I don’t know about you but I don’t have the time to really sit and watch a lot of music videos.  They really are destination viewing.  Here’s about an hour’s worth that I’ve assembled from throughout the year that I particularly like.  They’re not in any real order, except how I felt like mixing them as a set.

Included in the set:  Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Head for the Hills, Gregory Alan Isakov, SHEL, Taarka, Young Ancients, Ark Life, Strange Americans, My Body Sings Electric, Katie Herzig, Rob Drabkin, and Hot Rize.

NEWS & NOTES

For all intent and purposes, November concludes the year.  Any music that gets released in November is labeled as the following year, so we’re already into the 2015 season.  The big music news this month was the release of the new Leftover Salmon album “High Country,” featuring new permanent member Bill Payne (Little Feat).  I can’t recall off the top of my head what the last album was that debuted at #2.  The album was released on November 28, but the band made sure that djs around the state were serviced early enough to share the love pre-Thanksgiving. Outside of that one album the top 18 spots remained about as it was last month.

The biggest news of the month came from G. Brown at the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.  Richie Furay let us in on part of the secret in October, during Offstage …Beyond the Music, when he let us know that Poco and he would be inducted into the hall this year.  G finally released the rest of the lineup for the Jan 9 gala:  Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Firefall, Manassas, Poco … with special nods to Richie Furay and Steve Martin among others.  G. Brown will be my guest on Offstage …Beyond the Music in January – no doubt we’ll be talking a lot about the Hall of Fame.

VIDEO PICK OF THE MONTH

I don’t watch very much television.  Most of what I watch is late night stuff like the local news, a half hour of Jimmy  Kimmel, and about twenty minutes of the Daily Show, before I fall asleep.  Sometimes I watch on demand episodes of shows like Gotham — but almost never do I watch talent shows – so I had no idea this summer that a local kid was on America’s Got Talent, nor did I know he made it to the TOP 5 finalists in September, before being eliminated. That’s okay; TOP 5 is enough to propel the take off of a career if played right.  With that, here’s a video playlist of Miquel Dakota, from Monument, Colorado … enjoy
