A successful reunion show this past March rekindled a fire that hadn’t been present since the mid 90s, when Coloradans John Magnie and Steve Amedee rejoined Tommy Malone and Johnny Ray Allen, as the original founding members of the subdudes. This weekend, fans where heartbroken to learn that Johnny Ray Allen passed away on Friday morning at his home in New Orleans. No cause of death was listed. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, August 11.
I spoke with John Magnie Monday night and he confirmed that the remaining members of the band will perform at upcoming shows in Colorado, including Bohemian Nights at New West Fest. Former tour manager and bassist/vocalist Tim Cook will rejoin the band for their in-state appearances. Only their scheduled Thursday night appearance in Fruita was canceled.
Friday 08-15 Louisville, Colo. Louisville Downtown Street Faire
Saturday 08-16 Fort Collins, Colo. Bohemian Nights at New West Fest
Sunday 08-17 Arvada, Co. Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities
Sad news to report this weekend. As we approach the 10th anniversary of Bohemian Nights at New West Fest, this week’s show was to be a preview of the event. As part of the preview I featured a cut from the original lineup of the subdudes, who were slated to appear at this year’s festival in a featured slot, headlining the Library Park stage directly in front of the festival headliner, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo on Saturday night. Unfortunately, original bassist and band co-founder Johnny Ray Allen passed away on Friday morning, August 8, at age 56, from unknown causes. Being the weekend, there has been no public statement released by anyone from the band, or from anyone at Bohemian Nights festival organizers. As soon as one is available I will post it here. More on the storyhere.
OFFSTAGE …BEYOND THE MUSIC EP2 PT1
When I started thinking about this podcast series, I envisioned it being a chance for me to go visit some folks in the business of making music who we as listeners and fans of live music don’t normally get to hear from. David Glasser is the founder and owner of Airshow Mastering in Boulder. From his bio: “A three-time nominee [himself], he has earned two GRAMMY awards for mastering and restoration of the culturally significant Anthology of American Folk Music (1997) and Screamin’ and Hollerin’ the Blues: The Worlds of Charley Patton (2002).”
VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK
I’ve got footage from nearly every show I attend or work at. You can find all that I’ve edited at the youtube page .

I’ve had the privilege of producing the show for the Carbon Valley Music & Spirits Festival for seven years. This year was the first time we expanded to a two night show. It was also the first time we had seven regional distilleries present for the spirits tasting and competition event. We also brought in a new lighting director and expanded the kids’ activities.
I was beyond thrilled to present four very legendary Colorado artists this year- Richie Furay, Chris Daniels, Fred Gowdy (Freddi-Henchi Band), and Sean Kelly (the Samples). Presenting Richie was one of the highlights of the many years I’ve introduced bands to audiences around Northern Colorado, and one of the highlights of my life in music.
Richie’s “Kind Woman” has always been one of my most favorite songs of all time. Nearly every second of his performance of that song is in the recap video below — along with footage from Chris Daniels & the Kings with Freddi Gowdy, Chris Daniels with Richie Furay, Mojo Mama, Slow Caves, Savage Cabbage, and the Mojo Music Academy Band Camp program … I’m sorry I was unable to get any video of Alterity.
A BIG thank you to the folks who came up to me all weekend and said they heard the show on KUNC … folks came from Conifer, Aurora, Boulder, and Fort Collins. I got mad compliments about stage, sound, and lights all weekend .. much love to my buddies from Mighty Fine Productions (sound), Marshall Austin Productions (stage), and Maniac Productions (lighting)
Here’s a recap of the weekend …
