Colorado Playlist S10 EP34 SPT 2016

Well, it’s pretty much officially fall (SPT 21) and the summer outdoor live music season is over.  Fortober Fest in Fort Collins is among the last of the multi-band shows I know of regionally, and that happened on the 17th.  So long summer – it’s time for bands (including mine) to move indoors into regional music studios — among those who I know have secured studio time includes the Railsplitters, who recently returned from a tour in Germany…. along with the Yawpers and Pandas & People, who are both out of state working on pre-production right now.  More on Pandas & People in this week’s The Trusted Ear Scene Report with Dave Herrera. Music bed courtesy of Jux County from their new album Coral.

Sad news broke over the weekend.  Jerry Corbetta, the keyboard player/ singer and founding member for Colorado Music Hall of Fame inductees, Sugarloaf, (Green Eyed Lady) passed away on Friday.  He had been admitted to hospice earlier in the week, but there has been no news yet on the exact cause of death.  Jerry had been confined to full time care since being diagnosed with Pick’s disease, a form of dementia, several years ago.

IN COLORADO MUSIC HISTORY

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

Certainly, one of the top album picks of 2016 is SHEL’s “Just Crazy Enough.”  They add to the allure with a stunning Samuel Stewart remix of the album’s top single “You Could Be My Baby”

MONDAY MORNING MUSIC MEETING

I conceived of this idea as a way for you to discover some of the new music I played on the show, and to give you the chance to let me know which of the tracks you like, and think I should keep in rotation.  I get a lot of feedback from fans about what’s liked .. and what isn’t.

In order to be included in the MMMM poll, the band/artist must have an embeddable file available on SoundCloud, BandCamp (my favorite), Reverbnation or YouTube.

It’s not a competition.  It’s just a gauge of how well you like the songs I added this week.  You can select as many as you think I should keep in the “playlist.”

Colorado Playlist S10 EP33 SPT 2016

I hiked my first 14er yesterday, under a nearly cloudless mid-day Colorado blue sky.  I saw little children and “older” 60-somethings hiking it as well.  I was dressed appropriately for radical changes in terrain and weather.  Many were not, surprisingly.  Now seriously, Mt. Bierstadt isn’t what you’d call a hard climb.  My hiking guide is also one of my longest and best friends, and my lead guitar player in Goatz!, Chris Jackowski.  He’s hiked and/or climbed many 14ers, and assured me this was the next more challenging after Mt. Sherman, which is thought to be the easiest.  But for my first such effort, this was strenuous enough.

14265098_10157380855055133_3403270992383454157_n14344236_10157380854645133_6181598360737125056_nI learned that like skiing, which I tried a couple of times as a younger man, I’m not much of one for such activities.  I’m more the casual hike, bike ride, fishing kinda guy … that and music events in the summer are the limits of my desire. And now that the summer is almost over, it’s time for some early fall fishing and a couple of nice long drives to see the fall colors – which were breaking out nicely at higher elevations yesterday.

There was not a lot of new music to share this week.  But I did feature some covers — notably, Congo Square (Sonny Landreth) from Chris Daniels & The Kings, Comes A Time (Neil Young) from Coral Creek featuring Bill McKay,  Take the Long Way Home (Supertramp) from Drew Emmitt (Leftover Salmon), Tell Her No (Zombies) from Tennis, Messin’ with the Kid (Junior Wells) from Bill Frisell, and Happy Together (the Turtles) from the Jeff Jenkins Organization.

So, why am I highlighting covers?  Well, to be honest, it was because I’m getting increasingly frustrated.  It’s generally accepted that original acts do covers. However, by and large, cover bands get a bad rap; unnecessarily so, IMHO.

It’s quite okay to be a “tribute” band, but to be a cover band is an anathema to many.  Songwriting (and/or arranging), like playing an instrument or singing, is a skill that not every singer or instrumentalist develops.  Equally, like there’s a marketplace for original acts, there is also a marketplace for cover acts.   I hope we don’t ever forget that regardless of whether someone is a songwriter or not, music matters.

There is room in our venues for all types of music expression.  It ALL does not have to be done by those who write the music.

That said, I’ll have new music next week from OneRepublic, the Fray, Post Paradise, Tennis and others .. make sure to tune in.

THE TRUSTED EAR SCENE REPORT

A couple of weeks ago we launched a new segment called the Trusted Ear Scene Report … if you missed it in the show, you can catch it here every week … hosted by Dave Herrera at thetrustedear.com

BEST of 2016??

13502717_10154394040734736_448521162540216577_oI got the entire new self titled album from Paper Bird last week.  Immediately I posted that it was in consideration for Best Album of 2016.  I’ll leave it for you to decide.   No longer a straight-up folk-rock band, Paper Bird dives straight into the sound enunciated best by the likes of Fleetwood Mac on the classic rock side of the dial, with enough modern overtures to satisfy the most ardent lover of modern adult rock, all while paying incredible homage to the past.

I also listed several other considerations, including:

Edison – Familiar Spirit
Eros and the Eschaton – Weight of Matter
Pete Pidgeon and Arcoda – All the Little Things
The Bright Silence – Time Is New
The Lumineers – Cleopatra
The Motet – Totem
SHEL – Just Crazy Enough
Elephant Revival – Petals
Darryl Purpose – Still the Birds
Sound of Ceres – Nostalgia for Infinity

I’ll leave it to you .. but here is the YouTube Pick of the Week – the entire new album from Paper Bird.

Me:  wanna go see a show?
She:  no, you like local bands.
Me:  ???  “local bands?”
She:  yeah, you know … I want to see something better than that.
Me:  Ok, that’s cool.

Many people have a misconception about local bands.  SOME people think that local equates to they’re not very good because they’re not national.

Me:  Wanna go see Gregory Alan Isakov and Ani DeFranco?
She” oh HELL YES! I love his music.
Me:  he’s a local artist.
She:  he is???  I had no idea.
Me:  yeah, he is … <smh>

Gregory’s appearance on September 4th capped the first time in Colorado music history that 10 Colorado (read: local) acts headlined Red Rocks.  And that doesn’t count the support acts, or acts like Greensky Bluegrass (two members live in Fort Collins).

The next time someone says no to a “local” band, let them know it may be the last time they get to say “I saw them when they were just a local band.” 😉

Four tracks make this week’s MMMM (Monday Morning Music Meeting):  Eros and the Eschaton “Helicopter,” Chella & The Charm “Queen City of the Plains,” Slim Cessna’s Auto Club “Commandment 3,” and Elephant Revival “Raindrops.”  You can let me know which of these I should keep in the playlist below.

I have T-SHIRTS — LIMITED EDITION (only 35) 10th Anniversary “Colorado Playlist” … $15 includes shipping.  Order by emailing me at chriskmusic@gmail.com .. I accept PAYPAL only.  Please state size and mailing address when ordering.
