News Notes and Spins – February 1, 2013

2013 marks my 40th year dj’ing in one way or another. Officially – professionally – I’ve been in radio since my first paycheck in 1977, so I have four more years before I celebrate my official 40th anniversary on the airwaves. But, it was 1973, as a graduating high school senior, that I first laid a needle to a record for the purposes of making people smile and dance. Now of course, in my world it’s all digital – but I digress. You know that old saying, “never judge a book by its cover?” Well, never judge a music lover by the hat he wears LOL. I may love my cowboy hats, but you’re as likely to see me bopping to some hip-hop as well as some authentic roots country – unless you’re screaming or being outright violent… that’s where the line gets drawn for me. And here in Colorado, a place I’ve called home most of my life now, there’s more than enough great music of all flavors to enjoy – regardless of the hat you wear (or not).

Congratulations to KRFC on their 10th Anniversary. No station plays more music from here in the state than they do. See their website at www.krfcfm.org for information about upcoming celebratory events.

Congratulations to KGNU‘s Sam Fugua, who’s been a part of that station for over 20 years and is now stepping down as station manager. According to his email, Sam is looking “…for other professional opportunities in public media or the broader non-profit world in Boulder/Denver.”

KGNU IS SEEKING A STATION MANAGER

KGNU—a community radio station with studios in Boulder and Denver, CO—seeks a Station Manager to lead our mission-driven broadcast and online media organization.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to public media and substantial experience leading diverse communities in pursuit of the common good.

We are seeking an individual who combines strong communications, managerial and development skills with a vision for making local community media essential in a changing world.

Required Qualifications:

At least five years experience managing people and programs in non-profit organizations, including working with volunteers

Knowledge of noncommercial broadcast rules and regulations, including all Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) requirements
Demonstrated budget development, financial acumen, and fiscal management skills
Strong oral and written communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Strong organizational and time management skills
Familiarity with and commitment to the KGNU Mission Statement

Additional Desired Skills:

Understanding of community radio
Community radio programming experience
Strategic planning and implementation experience
Experience working with non-profit boards
Bilingual English/Spanish

Salary is $47,500 annually and is non-negotiable. The position includes paid health insurance and vacation. This job will be based at KGNU’s Boulder office and requires travel to our Denver office at least once per week.

CHANGES IN REPORTING PROCEDURES
When you look at the Station By Station listing you’ll notice something new. [titles reported =___]. I spend a few days every month scouring every single playlist at some stations, while others provide me a list of current titles they played in the reporting period. So, for instance, for the Jan spins chart, I scoured any and all records released from Nov 2011 thru Jan 2013. Next month, I’ll only look for titles that came out from Dec 2011 thru Feb 2013. You’ll not only see what records are getting the most love at a station, but also how many “current year” releases are getting played. Props to KRFC and Open Air 1340 for being the #1 and #2 station respectively in number of current titles getting aired.

News Notes and Spins – THE BEST of 2012

In reflection – what is the power of a recording – video and/or audio – that it makes its way to the uppermost partitions of the temple of our soul, our heart, our mind, our singing voice in the quiet space of our car or standing in the throng of a concert crowd? How do we assign such luminance to a single record, that it shines above all others in our collection? (btw, I have a friend who is about to say “we’ve fallen into the Chris abyss.”) What is it that makes a record our favorite of the year?

A full disclaimer is in order – during the course of 2012, I assisted several Colorado artists and bands in getting their recording to djs around the state – which I am paid to do. In the past twelve months I’ve sent out records on behalf of: Three Twins Broadband, Bonnie & the Clydes, Chris Daniels, Chris Thompson & the Coral Creek String Band, Jeff Brinkman, Katie Glassman, Kathryn Mostow, Susannah Thompson, and Sofie Reed, all of whom put out excellent records in 2012 – some of which did very well at radio and/or with the critics and fans who participated in our poll.

In the decades I’ve been involved with music and radio here in Colorado the question has too often been asked, why can’t Denver (Colorado) be recognized as a major player in the national music scene?

My hope is that shows like The Colorado Sound (heard on a number of stations) and stations like KRFC (Fort Collins) and CPR’s OpenAir 1340 have helped to shift that perception and helped to elevate the righteous claim to fame our brothers, sisters, sons and daughters deserve today. Colorado has become big talk the past decade – deservedly so.

OpenAir 1340 and KRFC deserve special notice in elevating our awareness of Colorado music – each with its own flavor, but both of which have shifted the focus of their airtime to what’s going on here in this state. KRFC’s TOP 5 most spun album/ep titles were from here … and overall, 80% of their TOP 10 were Colorado releases. Much love to all the folks at both places who have placed such importance on our local scene — I can’t name a place off the top of my head anywhere in the country that has achieved that in a major metro market area.

Congratulations to the latest round of inductees into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame: the Astronauts, Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids, KIMN AM, Barry Fey, and Harry Tuft … all very well deserving … next up in that category are inductees due this year – Chris Daniels, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

So, what’s my favorite? Well, my favorite albums of the year won’t be known to anyone except my wife and maybe one or two very close confidants. Equally I’ve allowed anonymity for the several djs, music journalists, and members of the industry who participated in voting in the POLL I sent out this past month.

The only BEST OF selections I sought no outside influence with is BEST VIDEOs of 2012 — these choices are strictly mine. My #1 pick for video of the year came to me late, like as I was typing out this column. It comes from one of my best friends, and a client-musician who I am very happy to endorse, promote, and work on behalf of.

Chris Daniels and I got to be friends about the time he released “Spark,” an album I thought at the time truly was a career defining release. His subsequent treatment for leukemia, and the inspiration that arose within him to write and perform the songs on his newest album “Better Days,” means for me that the current record is far and away his life’s career affirming record. The video for “Sister Delores” was more than enough emotionally, on the eve of this report, to make it my VIDEO PICK of 2012. God bless you my friend – I truly do respect, love, and honor you for your contributions these past many decades. Thank you for inspiring me…. and for being my friend.

And with that … have a SUPER FANTASTIC year of music in Colorado in 2013 … much love to you and thank you for your support in 2012.

News Notes and Spins – December 1, 2012

December 1, 2012 — we are now 28 days away from our Best of 2012 show on the Colorado Sound, which will air the week of Dec 29-Jan 4 around the state. Over the next week or so I will put up a poll so that you can pick your favorites of the past year – NOV’11-NOV’12. I’ll take those results, add it to the list of favs by some “secret” local industry insiders, and then add them to the spins database to come up with the TOP 40 of 2012. Should be fun.

Last month I addressed the idea that some artists who grew up here and have since moved away are still a part of the “sound” of Colorado – if not in fact, then at least in origin. To that, I have added a new designation, (CC), to denote a Colorado Connection. That may be someone like Sera Cahoone who moved to Seattle several years ago, or Tia Fuller who moved to New Jersey. Some folks have lobbied that I also include in that designation recordings from local studios of artists who are not specifically a part of the scene here. That’s an interesting one — I’ll mull it over during the next month or so.

Much thanks to new stations that have added or will be adding THE COLORADO SOUND — http://www.post303radio.com and KVNF (Paonia). KVNF will be airing the show as fill in programming for the next couple of months, before integrating it into to their regular programming in February 2013, according to station program director Ali Lightfoot. In other station news: KBUT (Crested Butte) writes in the “…public affairs program “The West Elk Word” is back up and running through the winter. Dal Dearmin has joined the KBUT staff as General Manager. Dal brings years of community radio experience from KSFR in Santa Fe. KBUT is more than thrilled to welcome Dal to the Gunnison Valley. I’m trying something new again this month for the monthly YouTube and Spotify feeds … The YouTube feed features 7 cuts coming in at about 30 mins and includes Paper Bird, SHEL, Rob Drabkin, Liza Oxnard, Mega Gem, The Gromet, and Roniit. The Spotify feed is about the same length (39 mins) and includes debut releases in November from Darryl Purpose, Elephant Revival, The Gromet, The Hollyfelds, Polarity, Sera Cahoone, Ten Pound Elephant, Trout Steak Revival, and Tyler Ward.
