NEWS NOTES and SPINS APRIL 1 2015

Happy Birthday Desktop BackgroundMarch marked the 5th birthday of this blog (March 2010).  April marks the 9th birthday for The Colorado Sound (April 2006 / KRFC) and the 3rd birthday for The Colorado Sound Live365 (April 2012).

March, like Feb and Jan, hit historical highs for page views for the month.  March also hit historic lows for the number of spins statewide for Colorado music, and the lowest number of stations spinning 10 or more titles since I began keeping track, nearly seven years ago now.  I really struggled with  that.  March also registered the lowest number of hours listened to The Colorado Sound Live365, and the fewest number of people streaming the station.

Tracking spins is always challenging.  Several of the smallest stations have no way of measuring or determining what titles they play.  Most of the time there’s no central accounting system in place and there can be over 100 individuals on the air in any given month.  Even some influential stations in the state have no effective means of tracking spins.  That alone presents some interesting challenges, especially if those stations stream online, but that’s an entirely different set of problems best left undiscussed here.

Only seven of the fifteen stations surveyed managed to air ten “currents”  (titles up to 18 months old).  And the difference in the number of over- the-air “exposures” (spins per station x number of station frequencies x number of stations) between the top of the charts and the rest was significant enough for me to tell you about it.

That we had what I think is at or near an historic number of debuts (13) this month is due also, I believe, to the low number of titles being played per station in March.  The number of titles tracked also fell to 187, the first time that number has fallen beneath 200 in over 3 years – although the total number of titles aired is about normal for the month at 108.

bill frisell_guitar in the space ageBill Frisell‘s wonderful “Guitar In the Space Age” rocked the top spot for the 3rd consecutive month, out blasting the stellar new albums by heavyweights like Chris Daniels & the Kings who continued their assault on  the top position for a second month, and the new Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield, Poco) release, “Hand in Hand,” that debuts at #6 this month.  Jeff Austin manages to jump to #3 with “The Simple Truth,” remaining in the TOP 5 for the second month since his January release.  Hot Rize also holds onto TOP 5 status since being released last September, a tremendous accomplishment to be fair.

Cracker made  the cut for  VIDEO PICKS OF THE MONTH with California Country Boy (sung by Johnny Hickman) shot as part of the Gondola Sessions at Aspen/Snowmass.  Cracker is David Lowry and Johnny Hickman.  Johnny Hickman lives in Northern Colorado.  He also plays in the Hickman-Dalton Gang with Colorado native picker Jim Dalton, and has maintained a solo project with musicians here in the area.  He has also been very involved with working with and supporting other Colorado acts, such as the Yawpers for whom he produced  the single “Faith and Good Judgement” (SpokesBUZZ Vol. V). And fortunately for all of us here, we’re seeing the band play more here in Colorado.  They just played the Moxi in Greeley recently, and will be appearing at the Mishawaka on June 6 as well as other dates regionally later in the summer.  In the least, Cracker is considered to have a Colorado Connection (CC).

NEWS & NOTES

2015 kicked off in grand fashion. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Poco, Firefall, and Stephen Stills’ Manassas were inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, and  Colorado Public Radio’s Open Air 1340 AM became Open Air 102.3FM.

30 titles added / 12 debuts charted … I think that’s a record for one month, but don’t quote me on that.  It’s a lot though.

KRFC (Fort Collins) announced the hiring of Charles Hale as new program director. Charles is a KCSU alumnus and in addition to serving on the board of directors he has been a KRFC programmer since 2013, hosting “The Ajax Diner Book Club” Monday nights at 8PM.

The Colorado Sound radio program began its 9th season; the ColoradoSound.com its 6th, and The Colorado Sound Live365 began its 3rd.  The Colorado Sound Live365 posted its best month since last June.  TheColoradoSound.com posted its best non-December month in history.

I became a member of the board of directors for SpokesBUZZ, a tremendous honor for me.

Offstage …Beyond the Music started off the new year with Colorado Music Hall of Fame executive director G. Brown – noted former Denver Post music  critic, KCUV radio personality, Colorado music historian and author of “Colorado Rocks: A Half Century of Music in Colorado” (Pruitt Publishing, Aug 2004).  A newly revised edition will be (according to G) published this spring to coincide with the grand opening of the new location of the HoF at the Trading Post at Red Rocks.    February’s featured guest is Wendy Woo and her husband Charles Snyder.

VIDEO PICKS OF THE MONTH

All I can say is THANK YOU to the “bootleggers” in the audience at the CMHOF inductions who had decent camera gear.  I heard that the official CMHoF video will be forthcoming soon – but for now, the first five videos are from Poco’s performance at the Hall of Fame induction.  Also included this month:  Young Ancients, Ryan Chrys & the Roughcuts, Danielle Ate the Sandwich, Mama Lenny & the Remedy, Eldren, American Blackout, The Sound and Color, Archive Nights.

(D) 1. Bill Frisell Guitar In the Space Age (Okeh Records) Instrumental/rock/pop/country [18-Nov-14]
This wasn’t even close.  This is the first time I can recall where an instrumental record debuts atop the monthly spins chart, and it did it by a landslide in number of stations playing, and the total number of spins, and frequencies it’s heard on.  If you listen to public/community/NPR radio anywhere in the state, you hear this record.  It is the most accessible and pop based of all of Frisell’s recordings.

The Colorado Sound S9 EP2 Jan 2015

Goat_Logo_color_on_white(Sunday Jan 11) WOW … what a great week in Colorado music and radio.  On Monday Jan 5, Colorado Public Radio announced that they had purchased 102.3FM in Denver, and that Open Air 1340 would move to the new frequency.  Friday night, Jan 9, Manassas, Firefall, Poco, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band were inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame class of 2014.

cprLogoDenver has never had a metro grade signal attached to a format that is as dedicated to local music as what we’re about to hear, beginning Jan 27.  And that’s taking nothing away from the efforts made in this region to support local music on the radio going back to the 60s. 950 KIMN is in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame partly for the support they gave to local bands like Boenzee Cryque and others.  KLZ FM, KFML, KAZY, KBPI, KBCO and KTCL have all supported bands from our area going back through our Colorado music and radio history.   None, however, have featured it as prominently as Open Air 1340 does.

What this does for SOME Colorado music regionally is nothing short of amazing. All formats are limited in scope – so no, not all styles of Colorado music will be represented. Based on what Open Air has done to date, I wouldn’t expect any major changes in what they play. However, if people won’t support it financially – by way of sponsorship or membership dollars – others will be reluctant to follow CPR’s lead.  #fingerscrossed  Stations like KRFC and Radio 94.9 in Northern Colorado and Open Air 1340 in Denver are really setting standards for a level of support of local music that we’ve quite frankly never seen before.

img-cmhof-logoFriday night was incredibly special.  A sold out house at the Paramount was on hand for a performance by some of Colorado’s music legends, and relative newcomer and potential future hall of fame member Nathaniel Rateliff who did the opening tribute set to Stephen Stills/Manassas with Jeff Hanna (NGDB), Jock Bartley (Firefall), and Richie Furay (Poco).

Firefall’s impassioned set included original members Jock Bartley and Mark Andes, with fellow original members Larry Burnett and Rick Roberts joining the “newer” lineup for the last couple of songs.  Poco’s set was electrifying – but I’m pretty biased. Supported by the Richie Furay Band, original members Rusty Young, Richie Furay, Paul Cotton, and Timothy B Schmidt turned it up to a level that literally left the sold out room roaring for more, song after song, in a set that included classics Call It Love, Bad Weather, Keep On Trying, Rose of Cimarron,  and Good Feeling to Know.  The only person missing was original drummer/vocalist George Grantham, who fell and did some rib damage a few days before the show.

Among those into folk and country music in Colorado the names Jimmy Ibbotson and John McEuen are staples in the scene, going back to 1970 when the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band moved here from Los Angeles.  Jimmy has remained as the sole original member still living in Colorado to this day, and although he left the band in 2004, seeing him on stage made the last 11 years disappear, if only for a couple of songs.  Of all the great things that came out of “the Dirt Band” moving here originally, it was their album “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and the title track that has remained as the lasting legacy of their time spent here.

And before we get to the finale, CMHOF executive director G Brown announced that the next induction, coming later this year, will include Dan Fogelberg and Barnstorm (Joe Walsh, Kenny Passarelli, Joe Vitale).

OFFSTAGE BEYOND THE MUSIC

In the current episode running now at the Offstage Beyond the Music page CMHOF executive director G Brown talks about his vision for the hall of fame over the years.  COMING IN FEB – Wendy Woo and her husband Charles and I sit at their dining room table and talk shop.

News, Notes and Spins – June 1, 2014

BN NWF 2012 GOAT ON STAGEWe can now call it official.  It is outdoor music season.  I could not be a happier goat.  That is my most favorite place to be, besides sharing Colorado music with you over the airwaves.

May was a very interesting month.  A good chunk of the month was spent dealing with personal health issues (I’m fine …can’t kill goats or Keith Richards apparently …hmmm).  I also got the final inspiration to create a new podcast debuting on July 12.

“Offstage …Beyond the Music with Chris K” will feature casual sit down living room / coffee table chats with some of Colorado’s most legendary music personalities, music industry leaders and other colorful Colorado music luminaries.  That debut will coincide with another BIG announcement coming sometime between now and July 1.  Keep your eyes open for that one.  We’re making history in July you guys.  You’ll want to be here for that.

WE HAVE A WINNER!

Congratulations to Eef & the Blues Express and Cary Morin for winning their respective categories in this year’s Colorado Blues Challenge held June 1 at the Buffalo Rose in Golden.

Since it’s outdoor show season, you can also follow the action as I bring you short video segments of the shows and people and places I’m a part of this summer.

Coming up on the Bohemian Nights “Thursday Night Live” stage in Old Town Square, Fort Collins:

  • June 5 – Musketeer Gripweed
  • June 12 – Young Ancients
  • June 19 – Selasee and the Fafa Family
  • June 26 – Finnders & Youngberg

The Colorado Sound S8 EP18 May 2014

mothersdaycrayonsignHappy Mothers’ Day.  Not too much to say today.  Enjoy the day with your mom if you can, and if you can’t then enjoy the warm memories we all share of our mom’s.

We’ve been enjoying the incredible 1982 Zephyr Heartbeat album the past month … and we’re not done with it yet.  Gonna have to be soon though, as new classics are coming in this month from Billy Ryan & Black Irish (2005 remaster of 1988 S/T album + demos) and then sometime around the end of the month we’ll have the newly remastered 1969 Zephyr, featuring Tommy BolinRainbow in the Bathtub as well as outtakes, demos and Zephyr Live @ Tulagi’s record to share.

Looking forward into June, we should have the self-released album from the wonderful Richie Furay, who turned 70 this week.  WOW!  Happy Birthday Richie.

Don ‘t forget … next Saturday – MAY 17 … to join me at the Mishawaka Amphitheatre for Head for the Hills with Grant Farm and Gipsy Moon.
