I just finished listening to the entire record, start to finish, as I promised Philip Waggoner (Sunshine House) I would.  This is his official solo debut.  This early in the year I want to temper my enthusiasm, knowing there will be excellent albums to come — but DAMN … this is one very very fine album… thoughtful, sentimental, open, moving … everything on here is top shelf, grade A, masterful.  I can see too why I was asked to listen beginning to end; it is really well sequenced, and stands up well for the nearly 47 minute long journey.   There are plenty of “singles” on it for those of us in radio to get excited about – but it’s one hellova an excellent long play too for a Saturday afternoon.

I was reading a post in Westword today, that contained some brilliantly well played music via video … presenting the Living Room Sessions –  … esp surprising is the soulfulness of Amanda Hawkins, lead voice in the alternative rock band DELLA .. who also is involved with the project “Who is Jane Doed?” … lead me to discover all kinds of good stuff about this lady and her friends 🙂 …

 

It’s true that a junkie is always trying to recapture that first high … long after the thrill of finding a new sound/a new artist has gone from wearing the vinyl into a translucent sheet of hiss you’re still looking for that rush, that feeling of innocent discovery lost in the mist of fading memories.  It’s in our dusk that we rediscover the beauty and meaning in the voice, in the stories, in the aching bending of notes twisting and turning like an ivy covering a well weathered wall holding memories locked in the pits and crevices … a poet’s poet, nature’s singer, simple, joyful, meaningful, beautiful … as much as a part of memory as when a youth dreaming at a marshmallow sky and a heart filled with wonder.  We do always seem to return “Back at the Scene of Our Beautiful Crime” where there’s a “Well Worn Welcome Home.”  It’s nice of Paul Russell to remind us.
