News Notes & Spins – June 1, 2011

Welcome to the un-official start to summer.  It’s the end of the Memorial Day weekend. Festivals are beginning to gear up – Denver’s 40th annual CHUN (Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods) People’s Fairis coming up this weekend (June 4-5).  It is the biggest of all the summer “local music” events that I’m aware of, and one of the largest in the nation – if not the largest with an estimated 250,000 in attendance over two days… and appearing – six stages, 110 bands; all of which are from the Denver/Front Range area.   This is an event I’d gone to off and on as far back as ’77; and have had the ultimate pleasure of serving on the entertainment and steering committees, and emceeing over the past 8 years.

In radio news, KDNK assistant music director Lynette O’Kane checks in this month.  “KDNK’s website: www.kdnk.org, has a new Music Page that we are very proud of. One can access it on the lower right of the home page.  On the Music page one can go to Current Releases, which documents the new music, spins and charting information.  The New & Notable page lists new music that has caught our ear, prior to and regardless of spins.  We have also have initiated a CD review page, Music Interviews and a Heavy Rotation page.  We look forward to everyone checking it out and giving us some feedback.”

I’ve moved production operations for the Colorado Sound.  Over the past several years, I’ve produced the show weekly at KRFC in Fort Collins.  Thanks to some good friends, some folks in need of money, and Mrs. Goat, I was able to build a studio sufficiently well equipped enough to produce this show and more in house here at the goat den.  It was a financial decision on my part, as gas prices being what they are made making the investment in equipment a good deal on our end.   KRFC will continue to air the show in its regular Saturday 5PM-7PM slot, until further notice.   Thanks to them for that.  I am looking forward to perhaps doing some site-exclusive features in the near future … but for now, it’s about getting out in the sun enjoying the summer concert season.

In chart action … Several BIG TIME debut records at the top including one that some of the jazzers are predicting is Grammy bound (Rene Marie)  and one from a very well established rocknroll hall of famer, who has apparently lived in Colorado right under this old goat’s nose the past twenty plus years (John Oates) and who’s new record is decidedly not rock or pop.  One HUGE surprise this month – KUNC clocked in with the most titles and number of spins of Colorado music I’ve ever seen from them.  And of course the college stations are now gone for the summer.

That’s it … have a great June — please sign up and be a subscriber, and I won’t turn down donations.  The show does have a cost to produce and distribute.  The stations that air this program receive it for free.  Tips are always deeply appreciated.

A Rare Concert Posting (and it’s NOT Colorado!!)

Okay, so in reality, a very very good friend of mine asked me to help — namely the lovely Liz Barnez 🙂

Looks like she has done gone and gotten herself into the concert promotion business … so, with a little help from her friends …here’s the latest …

SUNRISE RANCH CONCERTS and MUDHEAD MUSIC PRODUCTION PRESENT Pieta Brown and Carrie Rodriguez

Sunrise Ranch invites you to an evening of music under the dome as they continue their successful Concert Series on Saturday, May 14, 2011.  Doors open at 6:30 pm and the concert begins at 7:00 pm.

The concert features the talents of Pieta Brown and Carrie Rodriguez. A rising singer/songwriter who calls Iowa home, Pieta is the daughter of folk singer Greg Brown who blends folk, rock, country and blues to create a sound uniquely her own and has been described as a “self-styled poetess, folk goddess and country waif (BBC).”  Pieta has recently enjoyed media coverage on NPR, Paste, Harp, No Depression, American Songwriter and recently released a new CD “One and All” (2010, Red House Records) and wrapped up a US/Canadian tour supporting Dire Straits co-founder Mark Knopfler.  Pieta has also successfully toured with JJ Cale, Calexico, Ani DiFranco, Mason Jennings, among others.

Carrie Rodriguez is a classically trained fiddle-toting, mandoguitar-slinging Texas-based singer/songwriter just beginning to flex her artistic muscles with “Love and Circumstance” (2010, Opus Records). On the new CD Carrie covers Lucinda Williams, Townes Van Zandt, as well as material that includes tributes to members of her family.   Carrie honors her father, fellow troubadour David Rodriguez, with his unreleased “When I Heard Gypsy Davey Sing,” and her great aunt, singer Eva Garza, with “La Punalada Trapera” from the Mexican-American performer’s repertoire.  In addition to the new CD, Carrie made a recent national TV appearance on Austin City Limits (PBS) and toured with Los Lonely Boys, John Prine, Lucinda Williams and more.   MOJO Magazine says Carrie is “hot and steamy one minute and pure Nashville the next.”

Tickets can be purchased for $20 by calling 1-877-SUN(786)-0078 or online at www.sunriseranch.org. The concert will be held in The Dome at Sunrise Ranch, a beautiful 400-seat venue located west of Loveland, Colorado near Masonville. The acoustics and ambience of this venue will enhance the power of these talented performers.

Sunrise Ranch is a Spiritual Center cradled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. By day the wide-open blue of the Colorado sky stretches overhead; and by night, there is an endless canopy of brilliant stars. It is known as a place for learning, reflection, and transformation. This evening promises to be one full of music, energy and sweet memories.

News Notes & Spins – May 1 2011

There’s not much to report this month.  One item of particular interest is the change I’ve noticed over at KUNC this past couple of weeks — cmon!!  Cat Power???  Ryan Bingham???  Who woulda thunk??!!  Kudos to Kirk Mowers for breaking out of the past and moving towards a much more contemporary ADULT station that showcases a truly diverse musical landscape than what we’ve known KUNC to produce these past many years.  Sure, you’ll still some classical – but still … Cat Power???  Edie Brickell?  Paul Simon … and the list  goes on … not the least of which is the heightened focus on Colorado artists like John Common & Blinding Flashes of Light, Trinity Demask, Flexigrass and others I heard this week.    WTG KUNC!!

That’s it … enjoy the charts … and remember, if you’ve got a record out – radio can’t play what they don’t receive!

MMA’s reputation as a music school with an emphasis on the art of music performance will be reflected in the new academy’s design. The centerpiece will be a 2000 sq. ft. performance venue equipped with full audio and video recording capabilities. The new facility will also include an 800 sq. ft. performance teaching studio, eight fully equipped teaching studios, a lounge for waiting parents and family, a staff lounge and small retail area. The larger rooms will be available for performers seeking a place to rehearse, shoot a live video, or host a performance.

Since opening in 2007, the original MMA location proved adequate for the school’s humble beginnings, however high demand for the teaching services and the popular Summer Rock Camp program meant many students had to be turned away. Weekly enrollment for private lessons is anticipated to triple in the upcoming months. In addition to private music instruction, MMA will also host frequent concerts, recitals, clinics, and workshops. These opportunities are available for all ages and are open to the public. The Ken Pratt Boulevard location was also chosen in part for its high visibility, convenience, ample parking, and proximity to restaurant and retail establishments. MMA’s heavy foot traffic will provide an economic boost to its new neighbors like Deli Zone and Studio Boom.

Registration for MMA Summer Rock Camps, June 6-August 5, is currently underway. MMA is also accepting new students on guitar, bass, drums, vocals, keyboards, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, flute, violin and viola, with new teachers to be added to accommodate requests for other instruments.

The new MMA facility is the apex of a dream for owners Paul and Jessica Rogalski.Jessica, a singer, and Paul, a bassist with a Berklee College of Music degree, met on the local music scene and a romantic and creative bond ensued. Eager to head out on their own, they formed local favorites Mojo Mama. The joy and freedom from performing, writing and recording original music with Mojo Mama compelled the couple to share that experience with those still learning music. They envisioned a music institution that offered more than just private lessons, believing that simply taking lessons via a music store limited student opportunities. MMA was designed to develop student music skills, and apply those skills to real performing and songwriting situations.

The Rogalskis are also active participants in the Longmont community. Paul is President of Artwalk Longmont, Jessica has been a judge for Longmont Idol, and they have volunteered for many philanthropic events including work with the Longmont Humane Society. In 2009 they participated in the Boulder County Youth Workforce program which provides summer employment for teens. One hire touched the couple so deeply they “promoted” her from employee to daughter. Jackie Peterson, a talented singer, violinist and pianist, is now under legal guardianship of the Rogalskis. The great successes of Mojo’s student bands like Watch For Wildlife and Lower Ambush include performing at Denver’s People’s Fair,Boulder Creek Fest , Oskar Blues, Boulder Outlook Hotel and winning Battle of the bands.

News, Notes & Spins – April 1, 2011

Welcome to April.  I hope the spring flowers, budding leaves, and greening pastures bring warmth into our spirits and smiles to our hearts.  We lost two long time radio friends in March, and almost lost a third who I found out about as I was writing this column today.  Also in March, KRFC FM in Fort Collins hired and named their first ever program director, and hired a new executive director.

A quick note too about the reporting network and how the spin charts are put together:  Not all of the stations I pull info from are represented individually below.  I also keep tabs on shows like Radio 1190’s Local Shakedown, KTCL’s Locals Only99.5 the Mountain’s Homegrown Show, and the Colorado Wave; as well as stations like KSJD (Cortez), KOTO (Telluride), KUNC (Greeley), and others that air only a couple of titles, and therefore don’t post enough for me to list individual listings.  All of those stations and shows spins do get accounted for in the TOP 40 chart for the month.

RIP: Kyle Dyas, age 42, died from suicide after walking off the 42nd story of the Spires building in downtown Denver.  Kyle was the music director at KUNC since 2002, and a long standing member of Open Stage Theater.  MORE

RIP: Bob Terrill, age 65, died from complications arising from H1N1.  Bob came to Fort Collins in 1977.  He held positions as music director and operations manager for KCSU and as media librarian at the Loveland Public Library.  MORE

Best wishes to liberal talk radio personality Jay Marvin (age 58), who is recovering from a suicide attempt.  According to his wife, in the linked to article, “He was so depressed because of his chronic pain and no longer being able to work, he took at least 170 1mg Xanax.”  MORE

Congratulations to legendary Colorado radio format pioneer John Hayes (KTCL, KCUV, KJAC) for landing the gig as the first ever program director for Fort Collins based KRFC.

RADIO STATION SPOTLIGHT – KMSA Grand Junction:  KMSA is a student run radio station in Grand Junction. Entering its 35th year of operation, KMSA is proud to provide the Grand Valley, Colorado, and the world with Alternative music. www.kmsa913.com!

I was updating my list of Colorado public and college radio stations recently and found a new website and some pretty cool things going on in Grand Junction at KMSA — so I reached out and contacted the folks there about what they’ve got going on and what kind of Colorado music they like to air.  Turns out they’re way into Colorado electronic stuff.  I’ll be looking forward to finding out who they like as time goes on, but I did get this from KMSA Ops Mngr Kyle Cooper:

“We encourage our DJ’s to play anything but the ‘norm.’ norm being anything Top 40ish. Shows range from Pop-punk with artists like The Cab, A Day To Remember, Four Year Strong. Acoustic stuff like City and Colour and Matt Costa or Iron and Wine. Thursday is our official Hip-Hop day we have 3 or 4 killer DJ’s who play newer stuff to old school and R&B late at night. Through out the week we have multiple electronic and Dub-step DJ’s play some shows…many on Friday before “The Metal Authority” takes over Friday Night to Saturday night. We have multiple shows that play your indie rock and smaller artists.”

Go take a peek at what college radio looks like in Grand Junction when you get a chance and make sure, if your music fits what they’re doing, that you get them your stuff, punk, metal, rap, indie/alternative …

That’s it for news and notes this month.  Here are the spins for March.
