Alternative airplay charts – Roots Music Airplay Chart

Roots Music Airplay Chart is one of the more popular online websites for tracking regional airplay, as well as roots music in general. The state sections do not limit genre – only the front page reports do that. Here is the Colorado TOP TEN for the week March 4. Sometimes I disagree with who is listed as from Colorado, but that’s okay 🙂 Enjoy. I’ve only provided the top ten… see website for more detailed information.

TOP Denver Radio Jan 2011

It seems like nearly every person I talk to says something along the lines of “I don’t listen to radio anymore.”  BULL____.  We all listen to radio.  Sure, it may not be local radio all the time – although based on the following numbers, that too appears to be BULL____.  I suspect that we all turn on the FM in the car and graze the channels looking for something that interests us – be it music, news or sports.  I’m a news junkie … I listen to a lot of KCFR .. though I admit to also turning on both the sports stations – 104.3 The Fan and 87.7 The Ticket.  I don’t even bother with music stations anymore as a general rule.

When it comes to music, I’m stuck — because NO station plays enough Colorado music to satisfy me…. so, I use mix cds along with my radio to complete the experience.  I think that’s what most do.  I think that we all listen to the radio and scan the dial … or we have five presets and we interject our own mix of music into that.

That is, more or less what Pandora is up to – they’ve figured out a way to do local radio that incorporates music that the user wants to hear alongside of local news, weather, sports, and talk … that is gonna spell HELL for local FM stations here in about 5 years or so, as Pandora’s in dash solution reaches more deeply into our culture.  TRUE – those of us who don’t buy new cars will be left in the back of the pack, but that’s only a matter of another few years before used car prices get to reasonable levels for the rest of us.

Short for “cumulative audience”, CUME is the total number of UNIQUE listeners a radio station has over any one week period of time.  Since we scan the dial almost incessantly, we each are then counted as part of that station’s CUMULATIVE audience.   You may walk into the building and not spend more than a few minutes – and not buy a thing – but you’re counted as having walked into the building.

News, Notes & Spins – March 1, 2011

It was a pretty active month musically across the state, although I have to say I’m a bit saddened that there were fewer titles played overall in February than in previous months over the past year.  Big Head Todd & the Monsters had the HOTTEST release of the month it seems … and overall the top five titles SMOKED the rest of the field.

KCSU has been in the midst of some changes in Fort Collins, but I did hear from them that they’ll jump back into the reporting mode this next month.  Radio 1190 will also be resuming reporting status here in the next month as well … looking forward to two of our most popular college music stations getting back into the swing of things.  Looking forward to seeing what they’re spinning here on the April 1 blog post.

In other regional station news, KBUT recently completed its 2011 Winter Pledge Drive, “…reaching our goal of $40,000 in a record 10 1/2 days!  KBUT wants to thank its dedicated listeners in the Gunnison Valley, as well as online listeners from around the state, country and world, for their continued support of community radio.  The KBUT staff is currently celebrating and preparing to bring evermore unique radio to the airwaves.”  KDNK (Carbondale) is setting up for their mid-winter membership drive as I type.  I had hoped to be able to report a resolution in the KRFC hiring of both an executive director and a program directory, but the board of directors had not made a final decision as of Feb 28, so we’ll have to wait on that.

News, Notes & Spins – Feb 1, 2011

It’s not just cold, it’s DAMN cold!  How our friends in the mountain valleys manage this on a more routine basis is beyond me  LOL.  Welcome to the first new spins chart of the new year … lots of debuts this month, including Tennis, John-Alex Mason, and DeVotchka in the top ten.  Not too much in the way of news and notes this month… but a reminder, if you’re a fan/listener – membership/fund drives are coming up soon.  I hope you’ll contribute.
