The big news this week = Create Denver, in partnership with the IMTour Program and WESTAF, is presenting the Denver Music Summit, Nov. 22-24 (weekend prior to Thanksgiving). Programs and performances will take place in Denver at the Mercury Café, 2199 California St. on November 22 and at the McNichols Civic Center Building, 144 West Colfax Ave. on November 23-24.
According to the press release, the event is national in scope and local in focus, it brings together musicians, music industry professionals and enthusiasts to share ideas, learn about current trends, and inspire ingenuity. The summit gives working musicians the professional skills and connections needed to develop their careers and fosters connections to build a sustainable music community. The public is encouraged to join in and participate in this event. Tickets for individual events are available online and at the doors for the public, including daytime musician workshops and evening performances. More information at facebook.com/Denvermusicsummit.

Somehow or other I got the impression that Bop Skizzum was releasing a new video in Nov – and so far, the only one I’ve found is this one – that I apparently didn’t catch when it came out this past July? Brain freeze: seriously. Time to just put the facts out there. We did pretty good in October for listenership and readership here at The Colorado Sound. October listenership at The Colorado Sound Live365 was up significantly over September, rockin’ in some 450 unique streams for about a 14.5 per day average. This site here managed to eek out 43 unique page views per day over the month (2013 avg is 51 views per day). In October two days broke single day listening records at 47 (new Saturday record) and 34 (new Friday record) respectively… Next goal is to break 25 streams per day avg – and a monthly daily average of 60 here.

Required Qualifications: Associates degree in Communications or Broadcasting or three years related broadcast experience. Working knowledge of a radio studio and broadcast automation systems. Professional voice skills and ability to conduct interviews. Skilled in fundraising for nonprofit organizations. Basic office/computer skills and working knowledge of social media. Able to arrive at work at 5:30 a.m. weekdays and meet the physical demands of the position.
Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree in Communications or Broadcasting. Five years on air broadcast experience. Audio production skills including recording, editing, etc. Proficient using MS Office and FileMaker Pro. Experience working at a nonprofit organization.
Fan of KUNC Music, heard weekdays from 9 AM-2 PM, and KUNC Music After Hours (weeknights 9 PM- midnight), can now enjoy KUNC Music 24 hours a day, thanks to KUNC Music 247, a new 24-hour music stream launched in September.
The new stream provides an option for listeners who opt for music over Morning Edition, All Things Considered, or the other Public Radio Favorites broadcast over KUNC’s FM signal.
KUNC Music features new releases alongside established, quality artists that reflect Colorado’s unique lifestyle. “Classic artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Armatrading, and the Subdudes have loads of great songs, but they’ve been mostly abandoned by commercial rock formats” says KUNC Music Director Benji McPhail. “KUNC Music plays those artists alongside newer artists like Arcade Fire, Jason Isbell, and Neko Case. (Sunday OCT 6 2013) I spent last night emceeing the Spokesbuzz Bandswap show at Hodi’s Halfnote in Fort Collins. Colorado bands Common Anomaly, Echo Chamber, and the Epilogues all performed with Madison Wisconsin’s Sexy Ester filling in the middle (that’s didn’t come out right did it? … Hmmmm … better get off this train of thought real fast) .. but the girl did rock a fab mohawk and pretty little red boots … very happy to have been a part of something so cool. …Spokebuzz will be advancing their newest compilation to radio in November – the official release date set for mid-December I believe. The current lineup of Spokesbuzz bands is: Better Thank Bacon, Common Anamoly, Grant Farm, Justin Roth, Lindsey O’Brien Band, Maxwell Hughes, Shatterproof, The Deadwood Saints, The Echo Chamber, the Yawpers, Wasteland Hop, and Winchester Holiday.
I got to chat with Lindsey O’Brien a bit. We haven’t had any time to catch up since she moved back to Chicago last January – and who is expecting – in January maybe? She and and guitarist P-Mann were both very excited about a new single they recorded yesterday at the Blasting Room in Fort Collins for the new Spokesbuzz compilation.
So the whole flood thing is far from over and now that the gov’t has partially shut down so too have many of the sources of federal funding meant to help out our friends and neighbors … to that there’s a wonderful compilation out right now that features 28 live tracks from both CO jambands and national ones .. the compilation called River’s Rising: Front Range Flood Relief 2013 was put together by jam scene fixtures and Colorado residents Tony Hume and Annabel Lukins who called upon their musical friends to help flood victims. The compilation features 28 live tracks from Colorado bands like Leftover Salmon, Jeff Brinkman, Elephant Revival, String Cheese Incident, DeVotchKa, Yonder Mountain String Band, Head for the Hills, and the Motet, andnational jam acts including Furthur, Widespread Panic, Dumpstaphunk, Umphrey’s McGee and Soulive.

It’s not too often when something comes through here that surprises me – so this brand new effort featuring Shawn King (DeVotchKa) and Stephen Brackett (Flobots) with Boston native Erin McKeown comes through and does just that – surprises me. This will no doubt be the great “fall season” (3rd quarter?) single of 2013 – although because it’s digital only I don’t expect to see it spun at most of the mountain stations…
