The Colorado Sound S7 EP25 July 2013

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013So I had an interesting meeting this week.  I met with Clear Channel NoCO market manager Stu Haskell, whom I’ve known for a few decades now – and 107.9 The Bear morning man and program director Doc Jarnagin (he’s been on the air at the Bear for 13 years now .. WOW … who knew?) –  about the new station, Radio 94.9FM.  Essentially, it’s a transponder frequency tied to their HD2 signal (HD radio is not the same as HDTV).

At 100 watts of radiant power, don’t expect to hear this station outside of Fort Collins, Loveland, and perhaps Greeley (I haven’t made the drive to check it out).  Once you drop south of Berthoud you lose it.  However, iHeart Radio and their website are both good places to listen in at if you’re out of listening range to the terrestrial signal.

From a programming perspective, it’s what is known as a AAA station (adult album alternative) – akin if you will to KBCO with considerably more depth, and touches of early era KTCL programming philosophy.  Both Doc and Stu made it a point that this new station would have a CO focus – but the details are still being worked out.  The actual percentage of CO music to be focused upon appears to be up in the air.  Stu commented at one point they might do one featured CO cut an hour (roughly 7-8% of an hourly playlist).

We agreed in principle that The Colorado Sound would be a nice addition to the programming, as well as my help in consulting them on what’s hot in CO. The actual day and time they’d place The Colorado Sound is also still being considered, with Stu suggesting Sunday nights.  The conversation has only just begun –

— in the meantime don’t forget to check out The Colorado Sound @ Live365 for an all day all Colorado musical experience … stream it on your tablet, laptop, or pc … or via the Live365 app.  G3 and G4 data plans work really well, and surprisingly doesn’t eat that much data as I’ve learned from listening to the station in the car and at the gym every day.

New music coming next week from:  Dave Preston, Joe Johnson, the Escape Goats, AdrienneO, the Gristle Gals Band and more … make sure to check out the stations and schedules page ..

No new music shares this week — other than the Video of the Week pick from The ReMinders out of Colorado Springs – who I happened upon when I was invited to vote for the best of the Springs here recently …

Also new and just in – Dave Preston/Come Alive, the Gristle Gals/Sweet Pea, and a special Colorado Connection – Bob Lind/Finding You Again – the first solo album from this former Coloradoan and hit maker in over 40 years.

Video of the Week from Arthur Lee Land … not many get this deep into their personal lives in their songs …

The Colorado Sound S7 EP23 June 2013

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013Just got in from the Colorado Brewer’s Festival … actually got in last nite – but it feels like I just got in.  To the friends I saw over the weekend .. much love – the lineup was stellar, and we had the most perfect weather imaginable.

I’ve got to mention that there’s a new radio station in Fort Collins/Greeley/Loveland that promises to go where no other commercial station has gone before in NoCo.  “Radio 94.9 FM, Colorado’s Finest Rock” debuted on May 17 @ only 100 watts, and is also featured on sister station 107.9 KPAW-HD2, as well as online at  www.Radio949colorado.com and  iHeartRadio.  Long-time  market radio pro (started at KTCL in the late 70s) and current Clear Channel market manager for NoCo, Stu Haskell, reiterated to me over the weekend (and several other times over the past month) that there will be a Colorado music focus on this station – – and as such the station is asking bands from around the region to submit their material for airplay consideration.  Haskell was recently quoted as saying that “Radio 94.9 will be a perfect fit for the Fort Collins local music scene and lifestyle.  We’re especially excited to spotlight local artists as part of our regular programming and offer the local community a unique radio station that has been missing from this area for a long time.”

In other station news, 88.9FM KRFC (Fort Collins) is now airing The Colorado Sound on Saturday nights from 8-10PM, with Hour 1 repeated on Tuesday nights from 7-8PM and Hour 2 repeated on Thursday night from 7-8PM.  Don’t forget – the weekly show that you hear on KRFC, KOTO (Telluride), KDNK (Roaring Fork Valley), KWMV (Westcliffe), and KFVR (Pueblo) is different than what you hear on The Colorado Sound Live365.  The program focuses on that current week’s hottest new releases, along with breaking news and notes from around the scene.  The online station focuses on the current month’s TOP 40 + selections from my collection broken down into four sections => Hitmakers, CO’mericana, Funk n Jazz n Nugz, Rockin the Rockies, and Weeknights/weekender mixes.

Don’t forget – vote for your three favorite Colorado releases of 2013 = http://thecoloradosound.com/2013/06/13/whats-your-favorite-new-album-of-2013/

Stations =>I’ve got a couple of  new releases coming to you in the next week … I’m getting ready to send out a limited number of the new release from the 3 Twins (featuring former Subdudes members John Magnie & Steve Amedee + members of the 12 Cents for Marvin horn section & the wonderful Nicole Zentveld on vocals).  The album is called De Nada … no doubt it will land as one of the top OTB adds in July.

That’s it … I’m out … have a super fantastic week … and I’ll leave you with the Video Pick of the Week and four brand new music shares …

Video Pick of the week comes from Herman’s Hideaway talent buyer Chris Thomas – formerly of Spools of Thread, and now upfront with Omniism.
