CP S13 EP36 2019

MONDAY SEPT 16 2019 -I didn’t realize it until I was thick into producing the show this week that all but two of the featured (D) debuts are by women in Colorado music.  #COwomeninmusic

The Still Tide, Whippoorwill, Kerry Pastine, Kayla Marque, and Liptruce all have new releases out that will almost certainly be considered for BEST of the CP 2019. Add the new video from Cass Clayton the group of wonderful new music from #COwomeninmusic.

I was able to catch Kerry Pastine & the Crime Scene at their album release show with Cass Clayton on Friday the 13th at Dazzle, in Denver.    It was great to see some wonderful friends in attendance, including legendary Denver artist Lannie Garrett, who informed me she’s now retired from performing and recording.  We agreed it’s time for her to sit down for an interview.  Also in attendance, Angie Stevens, who unless my ears were ringing so loud I misunderstood, told me she’s playing the Bluebird on January 23, 2020.

Lannie also informed me that she’s been in the process of digitizing some old cassettes from her days in Forecast, which dates back to the late 70s, which is when I first heard her at Bentley’s at the BBC on Cap Hill in Denver.  I’d love to share some of that with you.

GOATZ! is back to playing at some of our favorite indoor venues, and a couple of new ones.  In particular, we’ve very happy to be playing at the new Broadway Roxy and Nissi’s Entertainment Venue & Event Center (Lafayette) in October.  Make sure to check our concert listings at www.goatzmusic.com/shows

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

Cass Clayton is a friend.  Full disclosure, she serves on the board of directors for the non-profit I started a few years ago.  I msg’d her recently to compliment her on her new video.  What I learned is that it’s both about where she grew up, and she shot the entire video on her iPhone, due to lack of a video production budget.  WTG Cass … one of the tremendous women in music in Colorado!

CP S13 EP35 2019

MONDAY SEPT 09, 2019 – Twenty years ago a very special woman in my life created the “picky grumpy old goat” after I returned from a tour of England/Scotland with my band and quit.  That idea blossomed into “goat” as I’ve been known ever since.  Miss Pattie, aka Mrs. Goat, passed away in 2016.

Over the past few years I’ve asked a handful of graphic artists to refresh the old logo that Miss Pattie did for me.  I’m very happy and honored that My Blue Sky drummer Jamie McGregor (Zamar Screen Printing Inc.) caught the essence of the original and provided the perfect update …and a new banner to go with it.  Thank you Jamie!

Speaking of My Blue Sky.  Original founding member and bassist, David Brandt, has announced he’s leaving the band to focus on family and other personal goals.  Good luck to David and the band.

Congratulations are in order for one of Colorado’s BEST – SUCH – whose new album Wide Nose, Full Lips landed in the national Billboard charts.  The album hit #25 in the national R&B/Soul Album chart and #5 in the national Heatseekers chart, across all genres.  The album debuted at #9 on the iTunes R&B/Soul charts.  Check out the latest single from her album in this week’s MMMM below.

I’m also very happy to premier the new release from Sean Kelly of the Samples aka the Samples called Indian Summer.  The Samples are a Colorado legacy band that formed after Sean moved here from New England in 1987 and formed the band, then based in Boulder.

Add to those fantastic new releases one from Jurassic Mark, aka Mark Bliesener, aka Band Guru.  Mark Bliesener is one of Colorado’s unsung music industry legacies. Among other things, he is credited with coining the band name Dead Kennedys. He has been the manager for both Lyle Lovett and Big Head Todd & the Monsters. At age 70 he just dropped his solo debut. It’s a rock n roll record with plenty of old school garage and punk. It’s not yet available online.  When it is, I’ll share it.  In the meantime, if you missed this week’s show you can stream it in the archive section at www.coloradosound.org

Now that the summer outdoor concert season is over, my band GOATZ! is back to playing at some of our favorite indoor venues, and a couple of new ones.  In particular, we’ve very happy to be playing at the new Broadway Roxy and Nissi’s Entertainment Venue & Event Center (Lafayette) in October.  Make sure to check our concert listings at www.goatzmusic.com/shows

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

One of the very intriguing artists to emerge from Denver the past few years, Kayla Marque almost didn’t get here.  A couple of years ago, she suffered from vocal problems, along with other personal issues, that prompted the title of her upcoming album Brain Chemistry (Left Brain / Right Brain) on which she deals not only with matters of the heart, but mental health issues as well.

Kyle Donovan – Then and Now

kyle-donovan-album-review-marquee-magazine

Kyle Donovan is a rare and beautiful talent … with a voice that lifts, he sings notes that feel like fire flies on a moist summer evening alongside a deep and slow moving river … this isn’t mundane … it’s invigorating. Few voices are as pure and unwavering in tone and pitch, or as sweet and sensitive in emotion.

Kyle’s quietly expressive stories of life are reminiscent of the best storytellers … none less than Paul Simon, Kyle’s strongest and most obvious muse. “Then and Now” is a love album – the best kind; it’s inspirational. That the album is self produced, self recorded, self mixed and mastered is testament to Kyle’s unrelenting faith and courage in his immense talent. It simply sounds fabulous.

This is an album for the end of the night – at the quietest possible time of day, and mind and body. It ends with the sweetest lullaby, “No Matter the Distance,” a “honey dipped melody” to the love of his parents, knowing “we will always be here, in your heart.”

Kyle spent three years engineering what really is a masterpiece of a solo debut .. and a strong contender for ALBUM of the YEAR on the Colorado Playlist.
