2015 LP/EP/SP Titles

Goat_Logo_color_on_whiteOkay .. I have to admit, this has been one seriously messed up year as far as new releases are concerned.  Not only have there been far fewer that I have normally identified by this time of the year, stations have been playing fewer than in the past couple of years.  I’m not sure why this is to be honest.  I realize we don’t track everything .. there’s no metal or rap in this list as nearly all of the stations I survey are of the AAA and/or CMJ format with strong focus on Americana, bluegrass, funk, etc.

I lost all my spin data from Jan through March (Q1) and have only been able to capture spin data in April and May (Q2) … so I have suspended my monthly TOP 40 spins chart for the time being.  With this being my busy season, perhaps I can get back to it again this fall/winter .. we’ll have to wait and see.

There are 138 titles represented in this list.  If you are aware of some titles not on it that should be, please inform me.  I’ve been maintaining this list now for over five years and I’d to keep it as up to date as possible.

Much love,
goat

The Colorado Sound S9 EP26

RDP_1271BWCrushed.  Absolutely crushed.  I’ve never been so busy.  Truth: some days I feel it would be easier to have a “real job” with an expected number of hours, and time off to just do leisurely things.  I enjoy no such luxury as I attempt in my final decades to tell as much of the story as I am able about music and musicians in Colorado.  Well, that and doing sound and/or emceeing and/or producing shows and/or rehearsing with the new lineup of Goatz!, back after a nearly six year hiatus (new recordings and/or videos coming  in August).

Hmmm … seems I slipped into the “Chris abyss” (coined by Morris Beegle from Hapi Skratch Entertainment) on that first paragraph.

I completely and utterly screwed up this month’s edition of Offstage …Beyond the Music with Freddi Gowdy.  I got new equipment last month to solve a long standing production quality issue, and didn’t get it right.  So for July, as we celebrate the one year anniversary of the podcast series, I’ve decided to pull out segments from some of my favorites of the past year .. starting off with one from the very first episode with Chris Daniels last July …

jill-sobuleJill Sobule is one of our native artists who has long gone unnoticed as such among local music fans.  She grew up in Denver, went to St. Mary’s, and to CU before heading off to Spain and other parts on her musical journey. So to lead things off this week I did an artist two-fer with one of her biggest hits, and something from her most recent album “Dottie’s Charms” from 2014 – that was largely influenced by a charm bracelet she found at the bottom of a drawer, “…hung with about 20 pewter charms, including an airplane, the Statue of Liberty and a disc bearing the name Dorothy.”   See playlist below to listen to the song via YouTube.

UPDATE – JUNE 15

Some how or another June has gotten the better of me, and stolen the time I normally devote to posting here.  Sorry for that.  Truly.  There was no new show this past week.  I was in New Jersey attending to family business.  I did, however, get to go to the Greeley  Blues Jam.  Gotta say, the Burroughs and the Frails stole the show on the Colorado music stage.

The Colorado Sound S8|EP36 + Review/the Burroughs

IMG_20140901_182522_349My outdoor festival season ended this weekend.  This was the 3rd year for Fortober Fest, an end of season downtown street party in Fort Collins, produced by the Downtown Business Association (Colorado Brewers Festival, New West Fest).  Highlights from this year included the Young Ancients, Sofie Reed, Soul School, Romeo Delight (a live tribute to Van Halen), Whiskey Blanket, and the Burroughs from Greeley, among the fourteen bands picked to celebrate bikes, beers, bands and the end to the summer.

It really does take a lot to stop me in my tracks and make me listen… even harder to make me turn around while I’m walking off – busy with some activity or another when I’m working a show.  That’s more or less true for nearly all of us working live music events for a living.   We see and hear a lot of bands and at least for me, most of the time I hear them in the background.

The Burroughs from Greeley

I feel like the guy who walked in at the end of the party, when I say I just discovered Johnny Burroughs.  Nothing online will prepare you for the energy of a Burroughs’ live show.  I had to be convinced to book them sight-unseen, based purely on their reputation with some friends of mine in the scene.  I’ll need no coaxing from here on out – I’m all in, at least so far as the live show goes.

The only weakness I see with the band is there’s no need for two guitarists, both of whom are adequate, but are both doing more or less the same thing, and neither of whom really shined in their role.  The four piece horn section worked extremely well as an ensemble unit.  The husband-wife rhythm section was there – laying down a foundation that never once got in the way of the exceptional arrangements that Johnny danced and sang over.  A trio of backup singers would be nice also.

Johnny Burroughs

It as an Otis Redding song that caused me to stop.  It was the engaging smile, red hair, dance moves, passion and pure soul that held me in place for hits by James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and others.  This ain’t no velveeta cheese on wonder bread cover band in a Holiday Inn dressing up and playing for an after work middle age suburban audience.  This was raw, visceral, emotional, ass shakin’, instantaneously crowd pleasing soul.  I will NEVER be surprised should I see panties being tossed at this guy from the audience (they still do that don’t they?).

Any of us old enough to have seen Michael or Stevie in the late 70s and early 80s would be transported… Add in elements of the likes of Tom Jones or Sammy Davis, Jr in their day and the ghosts are there, lurking in the mannerisms Johnny puts on full display inside his tight space on stage, sandwiched between the horns and guitars… far too little space to contain this new, bright, smiling, happy as hell to be there song and dance entertainer.

PS… the record really does not do the band’s show justice – this is a band meant for the stage, not the studio (at least for now).

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

Two videos this week… one from the closing band at Fortober Fest, Romeo Delight A Van Halen Tribute, and one from my pal Chris Daniels and his band the Kings with Freddi Gowdy on Rocky Mountain PBS.  Enjoy.

S8|EP29 JULY 2014 + OSBTM EP1|PT2

Goat_Logo_color_on_whiteOk.  I. Am. Brain-dead.  Gonna be a very crazy week – and I just got done a crazy week.  So, DPUMS 2014 is done.  Video from the acts that I did sound for at the South Broadway Christian Church on my youtube channel.

On to the next weekend.  Emcee Bohemian Nights Thursday Night Live with Manabi on Thursday in Fort Collins.  Friday and Saturday The Colorado Sound Presents The Samples & the Matt Skinner Band on Friday night and then a full day of music on Saturday with the Richie Furay Band and more as part of the 7th Annual Carbon Valley Music & Spirits Festival in Dacono.  Very much looking forward to hosting the Richie Furay Band Saturday night.  That’s like a dream come true for this goat.  …

Guess what’s NOT happening this month?  The TOP 40 spins chart for July spins.  Not gonna happen – sorry.  At least not until after all this craziness subsides (maybe next week?).  I do have to say how much of an honor it was last week to have so many people walk up to me around the region and say they heard the show on KUNC.  Thanks you guys!

The Colorado Sound is supported by contributions, and by the generous support of our sponsors – Colorado Case Company, The Mishawaka Amphitheatre and by SpokesBUZZ – pls visit their sites to see what’s up.  I’ll be on hand at the Mish on SPT 6 to present The Motet, whose latest self titled album has been among the most popular this year so far.

OFFSTAGE …BEYOND THE MUSIC
EP1|PT2 with Chris Daniels

Taking two hours of conversation and finding a couple of 15-20 minute segments was a lot harder than I originally envisioned.  PT1 and PT2 are available on the OSBTM page.  Here’s PT2 for you to download.  Make sure to grab the Soundcloud app so you can listen on your smartphone or in the car when you’re out and about.

Chris Daniels & The Kings 30th Anniversary Tour Kickoff – March 2014!

March 1984 Chris Daniels & The Kings played their first three shows at the Blue Note, Little Bear and Herman’s Hideaway. To kick off their 30th year the Kings will repeat that trifecta with three shows at Nissi’s … The Little Bear … Herman’s Hideaway!

March 1, 2014 – Nissi’s in Lafayette Colorado – show starts at 8pm

March 8, 2014 – The Little Bear, Evergreen – show starts at 9:15pm

March 21, 2014 – Herman’s Hideaway – show starts at 10:30pm

DENVER, CO (February 20, 2014) – Last year was a good year for Chris Daniels with a Grammy Award nomination for his songwriting and as a guest soloist with Al Jarreau in the Best Children’s Album Category for Jumpin’ Jazz Kids, and he was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in November with Judy Collins. But that was then and in 2014 Daniels and his band mates are celebrating their 30th Anniversary with a trifecta of shows in the towns where they began the journey. They also plan on a new release this summer with soul man Fred Gowdy!

“Our first gig was at the Blue Note in Boulder (now gone) and then we played at the Little Bear and then Allan (Roth) gave us a shot at Herman’s. I thought it would be great to kick off the spring and summer season of touring with shows in the three places that got us started.” – Chris Daniels

What was supposed to be a one-night-stand at the Blue Note in Boulder quickly led to the Little Bear offering the band a gig and then Herman’s followed up. Thirty (30) years later Chris and the Kings have racked up some serious mileage and achieved a remarkable list of accomplishments few bands from the area can match.

The list includes: 15 albums, 20 European tours, records that charted on the Triple A, AC and European charts, appearances on VH-1, Nashville Now, The Altitude Network, HD Net, Onhe Filter and French MTV and countless shows with artists that included BB King, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, The Neville Brothers. Along with various awards they’ve appeared at major festivals across Europe including Park Pop where the estimated attendance was 450,000 and almost 10 years as the closingFriday night headliner at the Telluride Festival.

“I think we’ve done more shows than the Rolling Stones! I sat down and estimated that we have averaged more than 100 shows per year, some years as many as 320 – for the past 30 years. That’s well over 4,000 shows – 12,000 sets. And we are still kicking ass and taking names!” – Chris Daniels

CD & The Kings are not sitting back. This year they are joined by veteran funk-master Fred Gowdy (The Freddi Henchi Band) for a new album due out this summer and Freddi will be touring with the band through the States and Europe all this year. “You are only as good as your next project” Daniels quipped, “And this next one is going to be so sweet with Freddi in the mix.”
