News Notes and Spins May 1, 2014

The first “offical” (unofficially speaking) festival weekend of the month has come and gone … with what appeared to me to be record crowds at FoCoMX (Fort Collins Music Experiment) #6.  That at least from my vantage point at Equinox Brewing on Fri and Sat.  On Sunday, my wife and I purchased a vendor space at the Root 40 Music Festival.   Some very good friends also happened to be there.

ParkHouse_logo_squareAward winning producer/engineer John Macy (pedal steel – Casey James Prestwood & the Burning Angels) and I spent a LOT of time taking about the new “house” he’s in – called Park House, it occupies the space on E. Colfax and Madison (actual address is 1515 Madison) once adorned by the Normandy Restaurant.

John has opened up the NEW Macy Sound Studios in part of the building, and suggested that live recordings and live-streaming shows are in the works.  There are a few videos at the venue website … well worth checking out this “new” venue (guess it’s been open over a year now?) …  and some crazy good artists/bands playing the room.  John also told me he’s remixing the second release from The Congress – and that the new Richie Furay record will be self released sometime this summer.

In a sign to take our mortality, and our health, seriously, both Dan Treanor and Johnny O wound up in the hospital this past month.  Dan and Johnny both seem to be none-the-worse for the heart problems that put a smack-down on our friends, and the out pouring of support from musicians all over the region was genuine and heartfelt by everyone.

Also in news this week … it dawned on me that this is the 30th Anniversary of some auspicious happenings in our scene … 30 years ago Candy Givens from the band Zephyr died after drowning in her hot tub, from a deadly combination of alcohol and Quaalude.

zephyr bathtubZephyr c0-founder David Givens is releasing a number of recordings from the Zephyr catalog, including the 1982 “Heartbeat” record, and a box set that contains the “Rainbow In the Bathtub” record from ’69, a live show from Tulagi’s in Boulder, and a cd of outtakes and demos.  Amazon shows it will be available on May 27, and a limited numbered run is currently available for pre-order.  David also let me know he’s got other Zephyr and Legendary 4Nikators records he’d like to release this year as well.

Other 30th Anniversaries include Chris Daniels & the Kings, who will be releasing a new disc in time for summer that will feature legendary Denver (by way of Phoenix) soul master Freddi Gowdy.  Chris is also finishing up recording the new Magic Music release – from the band that started it all for Chris in the early 70s.  And finally – Airshow Mastering celebrates their 30th anniversary also.  Lots of love to all our friends celebrating this year.

Chris Daniels Induction into Colorado Music Hall of Fame

DENVER, CO (October 23, 2013) – It’s been a pretty good year so far for roots and rock artist Chris Daniels, who was a co-nominee for a 2013 Grammy Award with Mark Oblinger, Al Jarreau, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Hubert Laws in the Best Children’s Album category, completing his 20th tour of Europe in October and surviving into his third year after being diagnosed with Leukemia in 2010. “It is amazing to me to be nominated for this honor, I mean, I will be there with the likes of John Denver, Judy Collins, Harry Tuft and I’m sure in the future Hot Rize, The Lumineers, The Flobots and so many more incredible Colorado musicians.” (Chris Daniels)

chris danielsDaniels began his career in the acoustic folk era of the early 1970s, first with Rosewood Canyon (one of Jello Biafra’s favorite bands) and then for five years with Magic Music – the legendary first jam band in Colorado. Daniels and the band played the 2nd and 3rd Telluride Bluegrass Festivals, along with festivals all across the Southwest. Magic Music was renowned for their tightknit vocal harmonies and early acoustic jam band extended solos. “I think I played every room Chuck Morris had in those days including The Sink, Tulagi and Ebbets Field plus we did shows with the funkiest bad-ass soul band around, The Freddi Henchi Band at their club in Boulder.” (Chris Daniels)

After taking three years to finish his degree in music, Daniels returned to Colorado in 1979 and started the critically acclaimed alt-rock band Spoons before getting drafted into The Russell Smith Band (Amazing Rhythm Aces) to tour the world playing guitar, mandolin, banjo and peddle steel.

In 1984 Daniels formed Chris Daniels & the R&B Kings (later just The Kings). The band’s first top 10 Triple A radio hit was “When You’re Cool” in 1987. chris daniels_when you're coolTwelve international album releases later Chris Daniels & The Kings will celebrate their 30th year together in 2014 having worked with the most respected names in music including: Bonnie Raitt, Al Kooper, David Bromberg, Sam Bush, John Cowan, Bill Payne and an extensive list of artists with whom they’ve shared co-bills and tours. They performed for three Presidents, including Barak Obama, plus The Queen of Holland and numerous appearances on local, national and international TV. The band has won a bevy of awards including several Best of Westword and independent music awards and Daniels’ nomination as a contributor for his songwriting and performance on the Grammy nominated children’s album Jumpin Jazz Kids. Chris also served as the Friday night closing act at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival from 1982 to 1991 and he and the Kings started the notorious “After Hours Jams” that continue now as the Nightgrass Concerts.

Daniels got into ‘giving back’ to the Colorado community – assuming the post as Executive Director of Swallow Hill Music Association in 1995 and leading them in the transition to their new building (at the time 2000) and winning both the Mayor’s and Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts.

Starting in 2002 Daniels began teaching at Arapahoe Community College, winning the Adjunct Faculty of the Year Award in 2006/2007 and then receiving the honor of becoming an Assistant Professor of Music Business at the University of Colorado Denver in 2007 where he won the Award for Excellence in Teaching from the College of Arts & Media in 2011.

In February 2010 Daniels was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia (AML-M4) and he went through intense chemo and eventually received a bone marrow transplant via stem cells from his sister Jane Moffett. Jane will be at the induction at the Paramount. He started performing and teaching again in the fall of 2010, and continues to record and perform in the US and Europe.

Chris returned to his folk and acoustic roots in 2012 with the album Better Days. It earned the #1 spot on Colorado Music & Radio’s Best of 2012 videos with the song “Sister Delores.” Better Days charted as the #4 Album on the 2012 Colorado Music & Radio survey in great company with acts such as The Lumineers. Better Days was “Most Added” on the Americana Music Association (AMA) radio chart and reached #19 on the Alt Country Chart in addition to receiving glowing reviews. Chris was featured live at the FMQB AAA Summit (Boulder), KBCO Studio C and the Americana Renegades showcase at the AMA Conference in Nashville.

Daniels is not only connecting with fans musically – he is striking a chord visually. His videos for “South Carolina” and “Better Days” have received almost 30,000 views in the past 10 months and animated video for “Medical Marijuana” will be released soon. All of the songs included special guest performances from the likes of Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield/Poco), Sam Bush (Lyle Lovett and Bela Fleck), Kenny Passarelli (Elton John), Hazel Miller and a host of other amazing artists.

In 2014 Daniels and the reunited members of Magic Music plan to release their first album – that’s right – their first with the help of Warner Bros recording artist Tim Goodman producing a long awaited studio album with guest spots from Sam Bush, Jimmy Haslip and more. “This is amazing to me, the songs were always great but we never got the chance to put them down in a great studio in any form other than 2-track live. This is the real-deal and it sounds just fantastic!” (Chris Daniels)

News Notes and Spins – SEPTEMBER 1 2013

chris boni vip 2013It’s official — August is the worst month of the year in terms of blog readership.  I thought maybe we broke the August curse this year, but no…. not even close.  We barely eeked out an increase over last year, hitting 1199 unique page visits … a far bit off our record 2,227 in May, and at 39 unique visits a day we’re really off of the 53 a day average for the year.  I attribute that to the fact that I spend less time writing in August and more time on stage – so look for increased blogging activity in the next few months to make up for it LOL.

The Colorado Sound can now be heard every Sunday morning from 8AM-10AM on Radio 94.9 Coloradowww.radio949colorado.com.  Radio 94.9 has committed to airing 1 Colorado track per hour of programming.  That places this Clear Channel owned property right up on top of the heap with Open Air 1340 and KRFC (Fort Collins) in airing Colorado music.

STATION NEWS & NOTES

KBUT wrapped up another successful summer pledge drive on August 12th. With the support of our family of listeners near and far, KBUT met our goal of $42,000.  KBUT is also in the midst of a capital campaign to cover expenses related to a new transmitter in Gunnison, CO. This 6,500 Watt transmitter (88.7 KGNI) will replace a low-powered translator that currently broadcasts at the same location. KBUT expects to be broadcasting from this more powerful and secure signal sometime in September. More information is available at http://www.kbut.org/powerup

KGNU has hired David Wilson as Station Manager. David is already working part-time training and starts full-time on September 17. Welcome David.

MUSIC NEWS & NOTES

I sent out a couple of new releases in August that feature two of the state’s wonderful female voices – Alysa Kraft from the Patti Fiasco, and Monica Whittington from the Monocle Band.  I also received the new album from Gabrielle Louise – which by all standards should win best packaging of the year.  I was also fortunate enough to work with a few of the best at this year’s Bohemian Nights at New West Fest … including SHEL, Rachel James (Rachel & the Kings), Hayley Helmericks (Snake Rattle Rattle Snake), Erica Brown, and Cassie Taylor – and equally,  Jennifer Lane and Sophie Reed received standing ovations for their performances this year.   So that got me to thinking… what are the top female fronted records right now?

1. Cassie Taylor – Out of My Mind
2. Paper Bird – Rooms
3. The Patti Fiasco – Small Town Lights
4. Finders & Youngberg – I Don’t Want Love You Won’t Give Until I Cry EP (Erin Youngberg is co-lead singer in band)
5. Bonnie & The Clydes – Wrong Side Up
6. SHEL – SHEL
7. Monocle Band – Monocle Band
8. Esme Patterson – All Princes, I
9. Ending People – Fill Your Lungs
10. The Whiskey Bottles – Grandville

Of course this takes NOTHING away from anyone else – we’re tremendously blessed to have had some of the best female singers, songwriters, and musicians in the country here in CO…

In other news – the Motet is in the studio with Colin Bricker at Mighty Fine Productions in Denver.  Supercollider just wrapped up tracking with Colin.  Leftover Salmon is working on a new album.  String Cheese Incident is working on a new album.  The new Richie Furay is closer to getting to us.  There’s going to be a new Piedmont Brothers Band record that will feature the likes of Rick Roberts, Jock Bartley (Firefall) and Richie Furay… Sean Kelly of the Samples thinks the new record will be done right after the first of the year, and there’s a new album coming out from Chris Daniels featuring Freddie Gowdy of Freddi & Henchi fame… I’d look for that one maybe next spring, but Chris HAS been known to surprise, so we’ll see.

rusty youngFormer Denverite, and Denver native Rusty Young, who still rocks “Denver” as home on his Facebook page, has been inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame – and right on the plague it says “Rusty Young grew up playing steel guitar in country bands around Denver…”  No doubt he’ll eventually wind up in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame as well.  Rusty has also just released another Poco record, “All Fired Up,” although he’s the only member of the original gang that appears – making it a weak “Poco” release, but a pretty damned strong Rusty Young release.

VIDEO PICKS – AUGUST
