The Colorado Sound S9 | EP15 April 2015

I love Monday mornings.  That is all.  Here’s what was played this week on the show.  There was more new music this weekend than I’ve seen in several weeks at least – the early spring blitz of new releases as bands and artists get ready for the outdoor concert season that gets under way at the end of April.

FOCOMX is the official unofficial start of the festival season, and if you’ve never been now is a good time to start. It’s pretty magnificent in scope and scale, this year hosting 300 acts from around the region over two nights and a full day.

Dearling’s rendition of the Fleetwood Mac classic “Landslide” was a refreshing reminder that there’s still plenty of room in the songs of others for local artists to explore and redefine in their own voices.  In the meantime, their last single, “Do You Love Me,” is my video pick of the week offering.

Fox St continues to lend credence to their ever growing popularity as a classic sounding band in the tradition of those from the early 70s that could have been or were comprised of the likes of Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock and perhaps Joe Cocker or Delaney Bramlett – needless to say they’ve been among my favorites for a few years now.

Instant Empire can lay legitimate claim to being at the top of the list of contemporary indie/alternative (new alternative) bands in the region replacing the likes of Photo Atlas or Hot I.Q.s with their new single “Dead Air.” Their new album due out this June.

And I’m not really sure what I can say about John Common that I haven’t written about in years past – he is simply one of the region’s most deeply intellectual lyrical craftsmen.   The new single is paired with a spoken word piece from John that I think is his first, and is marvelously produced by Immersive Studios in Boulder.

Truthfully, it was a hell of a week for new music, leading me to the new single from Natalie Walker, who the last I heard from was more ingrained into the CCM (contemporary Christian music) market segment than the secular world the new record reaches out to.  Natalie has had a brilliant career to this point with songs embedded in numerous high profile television shows.  The move from Denver to Crested Butte seems to maybe being a catalyst of change in her view of the mysteries of life for her.  I look forward to exploring the rest of the new album with you.

Don’t forget – COMING MAY 7 to KSUT (Ignacio/Durango) 10PM-12AM.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

OFFSTAGE BEYOND THE MUSIC

Coming in May – Mollie O’Brien & Rich Moore.  In the meantime we still have two more weeks with the incomparable Hazel Miller.

Goat_Logo_color_on_whiteThis weekend I ran this real impromptu non-scientific poll asking about buying habits – and no surprise it was sparsely answered, mostly by musicians or those involved in local music.  I will be developing a new poll soon that is more properly formatted, that a better suited analyst than I can manage.

Local music requires our support.  The Colorado Sound is about telling the big picture – from the superstar to the newly born. It’s about sharing the stories of my friends like Chris Daniels, John Macy, Wendy Woo, Hazel Miller and local legends known and unknown – David Glasser, Eddie Turner, Reed Foehl, Rock and Roll  Hall of Fame member Richie Furay and Colorado Music Hall of Fame Executive Director G. Brown.    You can hear their stories in Offstage Beyond the Music.  This week I’m extremely proud to present an intimate conversation with Hazel Miller.

I’d like to thank the Greeley Blues Jam for supporting the Colorado Sound.  It’s an incredible honor to have their support.  Thank you to the Greeley Chamber of Commerce and Al Bricker.  The Greeley Blues Jam features some of the best loved local blues, blues-rock, and R&B acts with headliners Delbert McClinton, Elvin Bishop and more … I hope you’ll join me on June 12 & 13.

Also coming up .. June 6 at the Mishawaka Amphitheatre – Locals x Locals a festival supporting local musicians.  This is why I do what I do – that we can celebrate and honor local musicians. The goal of Locals x Locals is to create a space for our musical community to thrive. If you are a local musician, we would like to offer you free admission and a beer. If you’re a fan, please be honest and support your local music scene with your ticket purchase.Treat this as an opportunity to meet new musicans and catch up with old friends.

And finally — AUG 9 at The Mishawaka Amphitheatre – The Colorado Sound Presents Hazel Miller | Chris Daniels and the Kings .. with special guest opening bands Goatz! (my band) and Williams Reserve (my son’s band).  Can you see my grin??  🙂

Thanks for supporting 🙂

NEWS NOTES and SPINS APRIL 1 2015

Happy Birthday Desktop BackgroundMarch marked the 5th birthday of this blog (March 2010).  April marks the 9th birthday for The Colorado Sound (April 2006 / KRFC) and the 3rd birthday for The Colorado Sound Live365 (April 2012).

March, like Feb and Jan, hit historical highs for page views for the month.  March also hit historic lows for the number of spins statewide for Colorado music, and the lowest number of stations spinning 10 or more titles since I began keeping track, nearly seven years ago now.  I really struggled with  that.  March also registered the lowest number of hours listened to The Colorado Sound Live365, and the fewest number of people streaming the station.

Tracking spins is always challenging.  Several of the smallest stations have no way of measuring or determining what titles they play.  Most of the time there’s no central accounting system in place and there can be over 100 individuals on the air in any given month.  Even some influential stations in the state have no effective means of tracking spins.  That alone presents some interesting challenges, especially if those stations stream online, but that’s an entirely different set of problems best left undiscussed here.

Only seven of the fifteen stations surveyed managed to air ten “currents”  (titles up to 18 months old).  And the difference in the number of over- the-air “exposures” (spins per station x number of station frequencies x number of stations) between the top of the charts and the rest was significant enough for me to tell you about it.

That we had what I think is at or near an historic number of debuts (13) this month is due also, I believe, to the low number of titles being played per station in March.  The number of titles tracked also fell to 187, the first time that number has fallen beneath 200 in over 3 years – although the total number of titles aired is about normal for the month at 108.

bill frisell_guitar in the space ageBill Frisell‘s wonderful “Guitar In the Space Age” rocked the top spot for the 3rd consecutive month, out blasting the stellar new albums by heavyweights like Chris Daniels & the Kings who continued their assault on  the top position for a second month, and the new Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield, Poco) release, “Hand in Hand,” that debuts at #6 this month.  Jeff Austin manages to jump to #3 with “The Simple Truth,” remaining in the TOP 5 for the second month since his January release.  Hot Rize also holds onto TOP 5 status since being released last September, a tremendous accomplishment to be fair.

Cracker made  the cut for  VIDEO PICKS OF THE MONTH with California Country Boy (sung by Johnny Hickman) shot as part of the Gondola Sessions at Aspen/Snowmass.  Cracker is David Lowry and Johnny Hickman.  Johnny Hickman lives in Northern Colorado.  He also plays in the Hickman-Dalton Gang with Colorado native picker Jim Dalton, and has maintained a solo project with musicians here in the area.  He has also been very involved with working with and supporting other Colorado acts, such as the Yawpers for whom he produced  the single “Faith and Good Judgement” (SpokesBUZZ Vol. V). And fortunately for all of us here, we’re seeing the band play more here in Colorado.  They just played the Moxi in Greeley recently, and will be appearing at the Mishawaka on June 6 as well as other dates regionally later in the summer.  In the least, Cracker is considered to have a Colorado Connection (CC).

Please visit my friends’ sites.  They keep this thing going.
