The Colorado Sound S9|EP6 FEB 2015

goat on boardIn Offstage …Beyond the Music EP7 | PT1 Wendy and Charles and I spent a fair amount of time discussing the “industry” of music; that is to say, how does how often a band or artist perform affect their career standing?  Does a band that plays every week, often two or more times a week, suffer from overexposure and how does it affect popularity and earnings?

This issue of earnings is prevalent among musicians today, all the more so now that the U.S. Copyright Office has released a 245 proposal, Copyright & the Music Marketplace, transforming the fundamentals of music copyright concerning both recorded works and the underlying composition/publishing rights.

“The Copyright Office’s recommendations address almost every aspect of the music landscape, including the existing statutory licenses, the role of performing rights organizations, terrestrial performance rights for sound recordings, federal protection for pre-1972 sound recordings, access to music ownership data, and the concerns of songwriters and recording artists. These recommendations present a series of balanced trade offs designed to create a more rational music licensing system for all.” http://copyright.gov/docs/musiclicensingstudy/

Equally, a story in Westword this past week, that also appeared in other “Westword” publications around the country, raised the ire of many in the local scene when the author lists six reasons Why Musicians Don’t Deserve to Get Paid …including:

6. Most Music Sucks
5. Art Has Never Made Money
4. You Are Already Rich
3. Feeling Pain Makes You Better
2. No One Deserves Anything
1. You Care Too Much (about financial compensation)

Nobody practices law, medicine, or plumbing as a hobby.  Perhaps ironically, most who pick up an instrument do just that – take up music as a hobby.  So to use the example comparing plumbers to musicians appears to be a non-sequitur to my mind.

Far less than 1% of all the musicians I’ve ever known in my life have taken up music as a lifelong professional career – and there are as many examples of how they earn their living as there are examples of those who have tried.  The freeway to profitability in music, dance, acting, art is littered with the forgotten names of tens upon tens of thousands of those who have stepped onto a stage, or drawn or sculpted an image.  And that’s just in my lifetime.

I can’t say with any degree of confidence that I know what’s fair when it comes to how much to pay someone for a performance, or for the right to access their music via publicly available means such as the internet or broadcast radio or television.  My hope is that those who wish to establish a full time sustainable career in music (art) are able to navigate what is simply a chaotic and overly confusing and sometimes frightening life as an independent businessperson selling something that too many take for granted as available for free.

NEWS & NOTES

2015 kicked off in grand fashion. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Poco, Firefall, and Stephen Stills’ Manassas were inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, and  Colorado Public Radio’s Open Air 1340 AM became Open Air 102.3FM.

30 titles added / 12 debuts charted … I think that’s a record for one month, but don’t quote me on that.  It’s a lot though.

KRFC (Fort Collins) announced the hiring of Charles Hale as new program director. Charles is a KCSU alumnus and in addition to serving on the board of directors he has been a KRFC programmer since 2013, hosting “The Ajax Diner Book Club” Monday nights at 8PM.

The Colorado Sound radio program began its 9th season; the ColoradoSound.com its 6th, and The Colorado Sound Live365 began its 3rd.  The Colorado Sound Live365 posted its best month since last June.  TheColoradoSound.com posted its best non-December month in history.

I became a member of the board of directors for SpokesBUZZ, a tremendous honor for me.

Offstage …Beyond the Music started off the new year with Colorado Music Hall of Fame executive director G. Brown – noted former Denver Post music  critic, KCUV radio personality, Colorado music historian and author of “Colorado Rocks: A Half Century of Music in Colorado” (Pruitt Publishing, Aug 2004).  A newly revised edition will be (according to G) published this spring to coincide with the grand opening of the new location of the HoF at the Trading Post at Red Rocks.    February’s featured guest is Wendy Woo and her husband Charles Snyder.

VIDEO PICKS OF THE MONTH

All I can say is THANK YOU to the “bootleggers” in the audience at the CMHOF inductions who had decent camera gear.  I heard that the official CMHoF video will be forthcoming soon – but for now, the first five videos are from Poco’s performance at the Hall of Fame induction.  Also included this month:  Young Ancients, Ryan Chrys & the Roughcuts, Danielle Ate the Sandwich, Mama Lenny & the Remedy, Eldren, American Blackout, The Sound and Color, Archive Nights.

(D) 1. Bill Frisell Guitar In the Space Age (Okeh Records) Instrumental/rock/pop/country [18-Nov-14]
This wasn’t even close.  This is the first time I can recall where an instrumental record debuts atop the monthly spins chart, and it did it by a landslide in number of stations playing, and the total number of spins, and frequencies it’s heard on.  If you listen to public/community/NPR radio anywhere in the state, you hear this record.  It is the most accessible and pop based of all of Frisell’s recordings.

The Colorado Sound S9 EP3 2015

Goat_Logo_color_on_whiteBirthdays are funny – aren’t they?  Happy birthday to me.  There’s a line I crossed – that line that says, “dude you’re old now.”  They’re right you know — I don’t feel “old.”  I know old people — like over 80 old.  I’m not that.   Long way to 80.  Lots of music to do until then.  Will I feel “old” when I turn 80?  I’ll let you know when I get there.  Until then, this is what I got … music … Colorado music.

I did sound for Lionel Young this weekend.  He told me there’s a new album coming out late Feb/early March.  There’s also a new Wendy Woo Band album due out about the same time, if memory serves.  Also coming in two weeks, a conversation with Wendy and her husband Charles in their home on Offstage Beyond the Music.

Word on the street this weekend is that Eck’s Saloon in Denver (Lakewood) has shut down.  Unconfirmed reports suggest they “couldn’t pay the bills.” There is speculation among some that the previous owners will take it over and reopen.  Will see what I can find out Monday.

So, Open Air 1340 AM is set to move to 102.3 FM on Monday Jan 26 — this should be fun.  Look out DENVER!

(EDIT) This move is not unprecedented. In 2005, KCUV / 1510 AM, Denver’s first and only attempt at an Americana format, moved onto 102.3 FM.  The experiment lasted three years.  Better luck to Open Air, a Colorado Public Radio (CPR) station.  Also, Paris on the Platte closed.

I also spoke with John Magnie this weekend (Young Ancients/the Subdudes).  He let me know the new Y/A album will be out late Feb/early March … to tease it here’s a new video.
