NEWS NOTES and SPINS – NOVEMBER 1 2013

Goat_Logo_color_on_whiteBrain freeze:  seriously.  Time to just put the facts out there.  We did pretty good in October for listenership and readership here at The Colorado Sound.  October listenership at The Colorado Sound Live365 was up significantly over September, rockin’ in some 450 unique streams for about a 14.5 per day average.  This site here managed to eek out 43 unique page views per day over the month (2013 avg is 51 views per day).  In October two days broke single day listening records at 47 (new Saturday record) and 34 (new Friday record) respectively… Next goal is to break 25 streams per day avg – and a monthly daily average of 60 here.

Coming up sooner than we think -> end of year best of polls.  Time now to catch up with your favorites over the past year.  We’ll get that going in about five weeks.

KUNC LOGOFan of KUNC Music, heard weekdays from 9 AM-2 PM, and KUNC Music After Hours (weeknights 9 PM- midnight), can now enjoy KUNC Music 24 hours a day, thanks to KUNC Music 247, a new 24-hour music stream launched in September.

The new stream provides an option for listeners who opt for music over Morning Edition, All Things Considered, or the other Public Radio Favorites broadcast over KUNC’s FM signal.

KUNC Music features new releases alongside established, quality artists that reflect Colorado’s unique lifestyle. “Classic artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Armatrading, and the Subdudes have loads of great songs, but they’ve been mostly abandoned by commercial rock formats” says KUNC Music Director Benji McPhail. “KUNC Music plays those artists alongside newer artists like Arcade Fire, Jason Isbell, and Neko Case. You’ll also hear the occasional Sinatra classic, local favorites like Jeff Brinkman, some vintage soul, blues and more. It’s a one of a kind listening experience.”

The stream is available at KUNC.org/247, as well as the station’s mobile apps.

kgnu logo  Got this off Facebook this evening.  Always happy to introduce another great Colorado music program to the listening public.  “Hey all you KGNUnits! We will be creating a new program called Local Gold on KGNU’s new all music stream, After FM. It will exclusively feature Colorado made music. What Rocky Mountain musical acts would you like to hear on Local Gold?”

VIDEO PICKS FOR OCTOBER:

I think I may have figured out this YouTube thing LOL… we’ll see.  This month’s video’s feature a live shot of Danny Shafer at a flood relief show that’s pretty special, along with the latest from the Fray, Tennis, the Lumineers, Star Jaguar and others… eight videos this month… so about 35 mins?  Better than any half hour episode on tv 😉

The Colorado Sound S7 EP39 OCT 2013

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013Monday / Oct 28, 2013: Good morning. Not a lot of time this morning, and obviously not yesterday either considering this didn’t get done and posted til now. Full day of music yesterday in support of CAN’D AID FOUNDATION at Oskar Blues Homemade Liquids and Solids in Longmont. Felonius Smith, Grant Farm bluegrass, and Rocktin’ Grove killed it noon to five …and then we had our Sunday evening show upstairs in the loft with David Williams gypsy jazz featuring David and Enion Tiller. All in all a really magnificent day of music.

So, what do Glenn Frey, Joe Cocker, Joe Walsh, and Rick Derringer have to do with Colorado music history? Three are current or past residents in the state – and two were produced by a famous rock producer who had a label in Denver (Tumbleweed) in the 60s, who recorded the first two records to come out of Caribou Ranch, and who subsequently went on to become the Eagles producer in the mid-70s.

Video Pick of the Week:  Danny Shafer and his family are among those who lost their home and possessions in Lyons this year.  There have been numerous benefits in support of Danny, the Tillers, and the many others who have lost because of the floods.  This video is from one of those benefits… grab the Kleenex kids.

The Colorado Sound S7 EP37 OCT 2013

Goat_Logo_color_on_whiteThis week’s playlist features a couple of acts made up of some folks I’ve had the pleasure of following musically for the past fifteen years.  Equally Challenged features guys who were in established Fort Collins bands like Fatty Jenkins, Brakeman Junction, and Zonky Tonk Zydeco.  Toad In the Hole is essentially Kristi VanDeWalker, Geoff Morris, and Mark Serratoni from the band Zeut, all of whom I’ve known now since the late 90s.  Also featured this week, the new Nathaniel Rateliff (and what is more or less The Wheel) release…

Video Pick of the Week:  I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention to what’s really popular out of Colorado – and no doubt with over 131-thousand views in just a few days, the new video from former Colorado Springs (Air Force Academy) and Greeley (UNC) resident Tyler Ward qualifies as impressively popular.  Equally, his EP  Hello. Love. Heartbreak. (September 2012) went to #1 across 15 worldwide iTunes singer/songwriter charts.
