Colorado Playlist – S11 EP14

New music shares this week from Debajo del Agua, Analog Son (f. Ivan Neville), Natalie Tate, and Ryan Chrys & the Roughcuts.  I also played a new cut from Wolf van Elfmand, but there was no embed available to share.  Ditto Rose Hill Drive who I had hoped to share also this week.

Look for new releases next week from Andy Palmer and Head for the Hills among others.

SHOW NEWS = 88.9FM KRFC Fort Collins moved the show to Saturdays from 4PM to 6PM.

GOAT ON THE TOWN

(I know that’s some corny shit .. but what the hell)

Look into any nook and cranny today and you can find live music.  This is especially true of brew pubs, where on just about any night of the week you can find an amazing array of local talent – generally of the singer-songwriter variety, and mostly in country, bluegrass, and folk styles — and mostly acoustic, although there are certainly exceptions to all those things.

The Prairie Scholars – CHUBurger Longmont – April 14

I stopped by Oscar Blues CHUBurger in Longmont Friday evening for a burger and a beer and caught up with friends Jessica and Andy Eppler, aka the Prairie Scholars… one of, if not the top duo playing Longmont right now… holding court every Tuesday night at SKEYE Brewing‘s open mic night.  SKEYE Brewing also hosts music every Friday and Saturday night from 7 to 9.  See their schedule online for details about the acts playing there.

Echo Brewing in Frederick does not offer live music regularly, according to the staff.  I stopped by there Saturday afternoon to see a friend and have a couple of pints.  Echo was celebrating their 5th Anniversary, and as a special event treat they had local garage rock cover band Cat Jerky playing.  It was a perfect afternoon to have a killer Kolsch and enjoy some classic rock and country.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

I first became aware of, and a fan of Debajo del Agua in 2007, when they released Arte-Santo.  Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of working with them on some shows around the region. Then, following their 2008 release The World Upside Down, the band inexplicably dropped off my radar.  I’m happy to say, they have a new album out for 2017 – with a renewed vision and expanded sound.

From their website bio:  Debajo del Agua has been a pillar of the artivist musical community for over a decade. While their musical style is not easily categorized or defined, it is focused on fusing hip hop with the melodies of Andean music, samba, son, salsa, cumbia, reggae, and reggaeton, creating a flavorful blend of melodies, spiced up with a style of its own. The members of Debajo del Agua span the Americas coming from Chile, Peru, El Salvador, Mexico, and the United States.

Colorado Playlist – S11 EP13 2017

New music this week included a cut from “Believe,” the new release from the String Cheese Incident that will be out on April 14, so no way to share the cut with you outside of terrestrial radio – and then only a handful of stations in the state.

Aside from the new String Cheese cut I debuted some fresh alternative pop rock from Compass & Cavern, 2015 Westword Bluegrass Band of the Year That Damn Sasquatch, an Americana track from late last year I just became aware of from Evan Holm & the Restless Ones …and I dug one deeper into the stylistically multidimensional album from Bonfire Dub.

GOAT ON THE TOWN

(I know that’s some corny shit .. but what the hell)

Officially, I suppose, I only made it to one show this week – and that only a brief part of two sets (dogs had oral surgery and I couldn’t stay out late Friday).

Thursday evening, a friend and I attended the Westword Music Showcase Nominating Committee Party  … held at the DIME on the UCD campus in Denver, in what proved to be a less than ideal set up with the bar on one floor, and food and entertainment on another – and the booze had to stay on the “bar floor.”

For the nearly two hours we stayed, we were entertained by a rap/hip-hop quartet (bass, drums + 2 mcs) quartet that featured local activist Molina Speaks .. during which most of those who I know as industry “heavies” were upstairs at the bar.

Friday night found me in Fort Collins for dinner and a show and caught me walking into a nearly empty campus area room with a classic rock cover band that honestly needed someone to run sound and a little more time in the rehearsal room …before making my way to Avogadro’s Number in Fort Collins to catch some of Tallgrass.

Tallgrass at Avogadro’s Number – April 7, 2017

Anyone who sees that picture and conjures a “bluegrass” or “country” band would be in for quite a surprise if they walked in and heard the band as I did this past Friday night.  In a room that caps out at just over 100 seated, there were about 70 people in attendance at the break based on conversations with the door guys.

Tallgrass does fit the “roots music” genre broadly speaking, with strong influences from Levon Helm (the Band) and other purveyors of American traditional and non-traditional contemporary heartland folk and old-timey music.  But somewhere along the forgotten highways the band has traveled over the years, drummer Adam Morford got “bored” and began experimenting – incorporating a wide display of percussion instruments and electronics.   I was fortunate, despite my brief stay, to catch both sides of one of Colorado’s most interesting “roots music” bands.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

I’ve known 3/4 of the Rough Cuts professionally and personally since the early years of the 21st century.  It’s a big UP that Ryan got the magnificent Susan Phelan on bass …the first “new” bass player Ryan’s had in much longer than I can recall.  “Country Music Soundtrack” is from the new release, “Shovel Full of Coal.”  The band’s touring schedule for April is sick – this is what you call a working band today, out on the road, six days a week.

You all crushed last week’s Monday Morning Music Meeting (MMMM), with Christomo leading the pack for votes, and a high KEEP score.  Two cuts this week… have fun.

Sometimes I’m lucky enough to be way out in front of a band’s digital release.  The only way you’ll hear the new releases this week from Dragondeer, Andy Thomas’s Dust Heart, Todd Adelman & the Country Mile, and TMule is on terrestrial radio – see stations and times.  Or maybe on Wednesday at the Colorado Sound All Colorado Music Meeting ….

GOAT ON THE TOWN

I know that’s some corny shit .. but what the hell.

Dave Beegle – 4th Annual NoCO Hemp Expo – April 1, 2017

Friday night my band and I played at the Tasty Weasel, the Oscar Blues brew pub in Longmont.  New and upcoming modifications to the room promise to improve the overall sound quality of the room.  They have expanded the room slightly, will be adding new sound panels and moving the “stage” area … all in all it will improve things significantly.

Saturday I spent the day MC’ing the Artist and Activist tent at the 4th Annual NoCO Hemp Expo.  Dave Beegle was the featured guest soloist for a couple of singer songwriter / speakers, and he also performed himself.  To say he’s an exceptional guitarist is a cliche at this point in his career.  I was able to find out he’s almost done a new solo album, that’s more to his “world”  influences.  I should have a new track to share before too long .. maybe early May.

Sunday I made it over to the Colorado Blues Society IBC (Int’l Blues Challenge) Preliminaries in time to see the last two acts of the day, Fort Collins’ Rob Wilson Band and Maxwell Mud – who turned in a blistering set of electric blues rock and r&b, but did not manage to place for round 2.  Jack Hadley and Mojomama will be taking their sets to Round 2.  Fort Collins’ The Symbols took the “wild card” slot.
