CP S14 EP19 2020

Monday May 18, 2020 – WHEW … I can’t get my head around a summer with no live music events.  Every day brings more announcements of cancellations and venue closures from around the state.  Summer is a time when most bands get to play to new audiences, and new audiences get to experience new bands and old favorites.

Typically, recorded music is instrumental in getting people excited to see their favorite acts perform live at summer municipal events.  Performance revenue along with merch sales provides most of the money a band uses to record new music. Which leads me to wonder how much new music will be recorded this year.

The Winter Park & Fraser Chamber of Commerce announced the cancellation of Jazz Festival, Solshine, Winter Park Uncorked, High Note Thursdays, Fitness in the Park, the Run for Independence, the 4th of July celebration, the Switchback concert and Tequila and Tacos.

The City of Dacono announced the cancellation of the 13th Annual Carbon Valley Music & Spirits Festival for 2020.

Last week I reported on the closing of Live at Jacks in downtown Denver.  On Friday May 15, 3 Kings Tavern on South Broadway in Denver announced it was closing permanently, unable to pay the rent after a solid 14 year run.  Announcing the closure on Instagram, the owners posted “The spirit of Kings will never die.”

COLORADO’S TOP 40 – RIGHT NOW

Friday May 15, 2020 – WOW.  I can’t recall the last time I pulled a statewide radio airplay chart of Colorado titles, played at Colorado non-comm stations.  I know it’s been at least five or six years – and maybe longer.

Normally, I track Roots Music Report.  Only a couple of Colorado stations report to RMR, along with several US, European and Internet stations.  RMR also doesn’t filter for current year releases.  A look at their weekly spins chart shows titles that are a few years old. So, when we look at their spins, we’re getting a more global look at what CO releases are getting played.

There are over 20 non-commercial public/community & college radio stations in our state.  Twelve of those stations use playlist generator Spinitron.  They include KAFM (Grand Junction), KBUT (Crested Butte), KCSU (Fort Collins), KDNK (Carbondale), KDUR (Durango), KFFR (Winter Park), KMSA (Grand Junction), KOTO (Telluride), KRFC (Fort Collins), KRZA (Alamosa-Taos), KSJD (Mancos) and KVNF (Paonia).

    • Airplay charted April 13-May 14 2020.
    • All releases May 2019-April 2020.

CP S13 EP07 2019

Monday Feb 11, 2019 – NEW EMAIL ADDRESS = coloradoplaylist@gmail.com

Happy Monday. Well, I was hoping that Colorado would  represent in the 61st Annual Grammy Awards yesterday.  Ron Miles and Tia Fuller were up in the jazz category, and the Wood Brothers were nominated in the Americana category.  None took home the trophy.  However, Denver native Matt Pike won a Grammy as part of the metal band High On Fire.  They won for best metal performance.  Congrats Matt!!

It’s been another week of more new releases rolling in than I can get to in any given week.  Someone asked me the other day, “why not?”  It’s pretty simple really: time.  I can get 12, maybe 13 songs into an hour. I allow three slots per hour for brand new (D), (N) or (P) releases along with one or two current and previously played tracks (C).  Add in a couple of recurrent (R) “hits” and a handful of older back catalog titles (G) from the past sixty years and you have an idea of how the show is constructed each week.

Factor in a catalog of over 5000 song titles going back to the late 50s.  So, really, only the “best” titles get in .. which leads me to the MMMM.  I got to new music this episode from Ryan Dart, Brothers Keeper Don Chicharron, Bonnie and The Clydes, Corsicana and Thom Chacon.

Still in the queue for upcoming shows, new releases from SUCH, the Mossgatherers, Lucy Daydream, Hunter James and the Dirty Dollars, Eminence Ensemble, Dearling and several others.

Please do vote each week to let me know which tracks you think I should keep for future airplay.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

Whitewater Ramble may be becoming one of the most enigmatic “grass” bands in the state.  Never one to shy away from ingesting a diverse pallet of stylistic influences, Patrick Sites and company fully embrace a deep southern country-rock blues vibe with a potent socially conscious and politically astute message in their latest video.

MONDAY MORNING MUSIC MEETING

Don’t forget to let me know if there’s something I should be playing on the show.  I scour Spotify, YouTube, Soundcloud and Bandcamp to find you the freshest new music from around the state – hope you’ll help out by voting to KEEP or DELETE the new music shares in the MMMM each week.

CP S13 EP04 2019

Monday Jan 21, 2019 – one of the most incredible things about the Colorado music scene is the nearly bottomless depth of talent.  Every week I hear about new bands that have been playing for sometimes years, that I never heard about before.  I also come across new organizations and communities formed to encourage support and collaboration, across genres and styles.  Two this week.

Colorado Original Band Community – This forum / group page is for Colorado fans, band members and or folks interested in learning and contributing to The Colorado Original Band / Musician Scene with open transparency. There are many different entities who are members of this page. Club / venue owners, promoters, booking agents, management, industry reps local to national and most important, paying fans. This is also a place for beginners, intermediate and expert level musicians to ask questions of any level or to post interesting, funny or educational info.

For the Love of Locals – For The Love Of Locals was started as a platform to fortify Colorado music. Founded and operated by Colorado musicians, their focus was always centered around showcasing Colorado talent, while giving fans, family and friends an easy and inexpensive way to support their favorite local artists.   Their best of Colorado 2018 Spotify playlist is worth a listen.

Every week I post up the MMMM (Monday Morning Music Meeting).  This is your chance to let me know what you think of the new songs I played on the show.  I do hope you’re enjoying this feature, and will continue to make your vote known, to KEEP or DELETE.

ALSO — don’t forget.  If you’d like to stream the show, it’s available weekly at www.coloradosound.org/
