Colorado Playlist – S11 EP17

Craziness … I’m late this week.  Big news this past week is the reemergence of the Colorado Playlist Live365 supported by the Mishawaka Amphitheater and Oskar Blues Brewery.. thanks to them for their support, and to Live365 for bringing the platform back online.  I hope you’ll visit once a day to check out what’s new.

Spent Friday and Saturday at the Big Wonderful and got to hang out with some great friends including, Drew Emmitt, Andy Thorn and Greg Garrison from Leftover Salmon along with Tyler Grant (Grant Farm), Jordan Ramsey, Eric Thorin (Matt Flinner Trio), Adam Kinghorn (Head for the Hills) along with up coming bluegrass bands Caribou Mountain Collective and That Damn Sasquatch — all in all a brilliant (and brilliantly hot and dusty) Friday and Saturday.

Randall Dubis & Dan Treanor at Oskar Blues 20th Anniversary

Sunday I was SUPPOSED to attend the Colorado Blues Society IBC (International Blues Challenge Memphis) finals at the Dickens Opera House in Longmont … AND the final day of the Oskar Blues 20th Anniversary at the Original Grill and Brew in Lyons … okay .. I tried.  I made it to Lyons for an hour before I fell ill and had to jet home, where I promptly fell asleep for 14 straight hours.

Congratulations to Mojomama for winning this year’s IBC!  WTG!

Colorado Playlist – S11 EP16

Right up front I want to thank Oskar Blues Brewery for becoming a major sponsor of this show.  Oskar Blues has been part of my family for a decade and I’m ecstatic that they believe enough in the show to support it.

OB is celebrating 20 years in Lyons this coming weekend with a killer lineup that includes Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, Gasoline Lollipops, Halden Wofford & the Hi*Beams and many others.  Of special note – Sunday will be a legends of Colorado blues artist showcase I intend to be present for.

It’s been a very very long time since I stayed up until 4AM.  I managed to land a room to mix for the FoCOMX weekend, and we landed a prime 9:15PM Friday night slot for the band at the Mainline Ale House – one of the nicer restaurants and music venues in Old Town Fort Collins.  What was planned to be outside on the rooftop, fortunately was moved indoors into a room that was more than adequate for live music.

Stationed for sound duties at East Coast on Linden St, for both nights, I enjoyed the juxtaposition of singer-songwriters and folk singers, and DJs creating often unique mixes of various styles of appropriate music made for dancing.

I spent 16 years mixing music in dance clubs in the 70s and 80s.  Several of those years were here in Northern Colorado, in Fort Collins and Greeley.  I was thrust back to those years as I watched the lineup of local mix masters employ their craft.

I marveled at how other than technology, nothing much has changed in the art of mixing music for a dance crowd – and how the “hit” still matters most when you want to get people on the floor.  One dj did not employ that knowledge, and paid the price of a near empty room that lacked energy.

Michelle Petrie Trio – FoCOMX 9 – East Coast

Festivals like FoCOMX are motivated by allowing space for a diversity of people who make music – from neophyte stage performers to unequivocally well rehearsed, polished, and professional legends of music along the Front Range.

Two acoustic acts I thought showed a lot of promise were the Michelle Petrie Trio and PoorBoy, who will undoubtedly be changing their name.   PoorBoy is recording their second EP with Justin Roth in Fort Collins.

String Theory on Friday was one of the most creative acts of the weekend – featuring electric bass with harp (not harmonica – a real harp; a small laptop version).

David Starr lives in Cedaridge CO, where he owns a guitar store and hangs out with the likes of John Oates, who produced David’s new album.  One of Colorado’s best country-folk / Americana songwriters.

New music shares this week from Debajo del Agua, Analog Son (f. Ivan Neville), Natalie Tate, and Ryan Chrys & the Roughcuts.  I also played a new cut from Wolf van Elfmand, but there was no embed available to share.  Ditto Rose Hill Drive who I had hoped to share also this week.

Look for new releases next week from Andy Palmer and Head for the Hills among others.

GOAT ON THE TOWN

(I know that’s some corny shit .. but what the hell)

Look into any nook and cranny today and you can find live music.  This is especially true of brew pubs, where on just about any night of the week you can find an amazing array of local talent – generally of the singer-songwriter variety, and mostly in country, bluegrass, and folk styles — and mostly acoustic, although there are certainly exceptions to all those things.

The Prairie Scholars – CHUBurger Longmont – April 14

I stopped by Oscar Blues CHUBurger in Longmont Friday evening for a burger and a beer and caught up with friends Jessica and Andy Eppler, aka the Prairie Scholars… one of, if not the top duo playing Longmont right now… holding court every Tuesday night at SKEYE Brewing‘s open mic night.  SKEYE Brewing also hosts music every Friday and Saturday night from 7 to 9.  See their schedule online for details about the acts playing there.

Echo Brewing in Frederick does not offer live music regularly, according to the staff.  I stopped by there Saturday afternoon to see a friend and have a couple of pints.  Echo was celebrating their 5th Anniversary, and as a special event treat they had local garage rock cover band Cat Jerky playing.  It was a perfect afternoon to have a killer Kolsch and enjoy some classic rock and country.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

I first became aware of, and a fan of Debajo del Agua in 2007, when they released Arte-Santo.  Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of working with them on some shows around the region. Then, following their 2008 release The World Upside Down, the band inexplicably dropped off my radar.  I’m happy to say, they have a new album out for 2017 – with a renewed vision and expanded sound.

From their website bio:  Debajo del Agua has been a pillar of the artivist musical community for over a decade. While their musical style is not easily categorized or defined, it is focused on fusing hip hop with the melodies of Andean music, samba, son, salsa, cumbia, reggae, and reggaeton, creating a flavorful blend of melodies, spiced up with a style of its own. The members of Debajo del Agua span the Americas coming from Chile, Peru, El Salvador, Mexico, and the United States.
