Colorado Playlist S10 EP37 OCT 2016

Happy Monday.  With the political world in turmoil, and rookie QB Paxton Lynch taking a tumble, or two … or six … let’s turn our attention to this week’s new music on the Colorado Playlist.

One big change this week.  I’ve changed how the MMMM (Monday Morning Music Meeting) works.  See below.  I think it will give us a better indication of which songs you think we should KEEP or NOT KEEP in the Playlist.

Thanks to Grim&Darling for the radio premiere of their new single Rather Not, which is also the Video Pick of the Week.

I realize this has nothing to do with music or musicians here in Colorado (other than GOATZ! playing this event), but this is an important organization in my life.

Last winter, during Mrs Goat’s final days, I promised that her (our) daughter would always have a forever Dad.  Our daughter was 40 years old at the time of the adoption — and adopting an adult child of that age is not something that you see every day, by the admission of the judge who finalized the adoption.

Adoption Dreams executive director Cindy Sarai and her staff came to the rescue and expedited our adoption, which was completed four days before my wife passed away.  I’m honored to have been asked to be the Master of Ceremonies at this year’s fundraiser.  I hope to see many friends at this event.  Click on picture for more details.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

MONDAY MORNING MUSIC MEETING

I conceived of this idea as a way for you to discover some of the new music I played on the show, and to give you the chance to let me know which of the tracks you like, and think I should keep in rotation.  I get a lot of feedback from fans about what’s liked .. and what isn’t.

In order to be included in the MMMM poll, the band/artist must have an embeddable file available on SoundCloud, BandCamp (my favorite), Reverbnation or YouTube.

It’s not a competition.  It’s just a gauge of how well you like the songs I added this week.

Colorado Playlist S10 EP36 OCT 2016

Sometimes a song hits me hard.  Mawule‘s “Black is Beautiful” came to me via email a few weeks ago, and I had to wait to air it – although I listened to it numerous times in my own time and space.  Born Ebenezer Yebuah, Mawule, was born and raised in Accra, Ghana. He and his family moved to Denver when he was 10 years old and he’s remained here ever since.

While other Denver hip-hop artists are receiving more praise, and getting signed to bigger, more nationally recognized labels, Mawule’s Black is Beautiful stands out among all the hip-hop tracks I normally receive.

Other than one other cut, from The Longest Day of the Year, “Black is Beautiful” is the only other song in this week’s MMMM (Monday Morning Music Meeting).  The other acts did not have shareable embeds for their new cuts.

bobby-walker#cancersucks Colorado legacy bluesman Bobby Walker is the latest in a run of brothers and sisters in the scene the past couple of years who have been diagnosed with and is undergoing treatment for cancer.  In Bobby’s case, it’s throat cancer.  Bobby is good about posting updates at his FB pg.

Props to the International Blues Society for being there to help out with a major contribution.  More than $11,000 has been raised via GoFundMe to offset the costs that Bobby is facing as he deals with everything.  We’ve lost a couple of our friends to cancer the past year – and a couple have had successful treatments.  I’m hoping we get many more years of Mr. Walker’s wonderful voice.  Much love my friend.

COLORADO PLAYLIST S10 EP35

It’s Monday.  I’m supposed to write about …… …. …. new music this week below in the MMMM (Monday Morning Music Meeting) with more new music coming in this week for next weekend’s show … with the VIDEO PICK of the WEEK going to Wheelchair Sports Camp for what could be the video pick of 2016 …

A thought … I’ve noticed that I can identify my core fanbase here at the Colorado Playlist blogsite and on Twitter and Facebook.  I cannot as easily identify my listener base, outside of ratings in any given city or town, and some of them do not get ratings information.

I’ve noticed that while my listenership is strong, the number of folks who participate on this site, and are engaged in keeping up on Colorado music is pretty low … If my fans don’t engage, how do we do a better job of getting the music out there?

I recently read a compelling article by a long time radio program director who essentially posited that music discovery takes a nose-dive after age 25. After age 25, listeners tend to become more passive in their music demands and that by the time listeners reach their mid-30s, their ability to absorb new music has decreased significantly. They need approximately 60% of the songs in their music mix to be familiar.

That doesn’t spell well when it comes to trying to share new music with adults over age 30 …. what do you think?  Comments accepted below or on FB or Twitter.

News broke over the weekend that Conor O’Neills in Boulder is closing at the end of this week after 17 years.  According to reports being published on social media and elsewhere, the reason is loss of sales due to construction next door to the restaurant/music venue, and a too slow pace of recovery once the construction was finished.
