CO TOP 40 MAY 2020

It’s been several years since I tracked and posted a monthly TOP 40 chart for Colorado music, played on Colorado radio stations.  Thanks to my friends at Spinitron for allowing me access to their playlist generator database for a few months (no, it’s not permanent access – yet).

Spinitron’s playlist generator was developed to benefit non-commercial public and educational terrestrial radio stations in the US that simultaneously stream online and broadcast over airwaves. Record promoters are among those most likely to benefit from Spinitron’s detailed advance search function.

There are over 20 FM and LPFM (low power FM) non-commercial public/community and college stations in Colorado.  I’m able to track spins at 12 of those stations that have some kind of searchable online database or use Spinitron.

The two stations I most frequently get asked about are 105.5 The Colorado Sound, where I’m a part of the on-air team, and Indie 102.3 (Denver/Fort Collins).  Both have searchable databases.  So I’ll lead off the TOP 40 for May 2020 with their respective TOP 5.

CP S14 EP21 2020

MONDAY JUNE 01 2020 – Despite COVID and despite protests and riots this weekend, music still played an incredible role in the lives of those who earn their living in music.  On Saturday night, the Colorado Music Relief Fund raised over $500,000  to support those in our industry affected by our industry being shut down.

The event included Colorado based acts Austin Young, Gabrielle Louise, Inaiah Lujan, Isaac Slade (The Fray), Nathaniel Rateliff, Nick and Helen Forster (E-Town), The Lumineers, The Reminders, The Still Tide, The String Cheese Incident, Todd Park Mohr (Big Head Todd & the Monsters) and Wildermiss  along with a great cast of national acts who consider Colorado special in their lives and careers.

Over 135,000 people live streamed the event on Youtube.  If you missed it, you can watch now.

In lieu of a weekly spins chart this week, I will be publishing the MAY 2020 CO TOP 40 TITLES tomorrow, June 2 – which will also include separate TOP 5 spins from 105.5 The Colorado Sound and Indie 102.3. That said….

ROOTS MUSIC REPORT WK ENDING MAY 30 2020 finds Reverend Freakchild reclaiming the #1 spot over Nathaniel Rateliff with the rest of the top five remaining as it was was last with — #3=Mojomama, #4=The Lumineers and #5=Lee Sims.

CP S14 EP18 2020

Monday May 11, 2020 – I wake up every Monday morning and sit at the kitchen table to write this post.  I look out at a trio of unfinished homes from my window. I haven’t seen a single crew for weeks. And I wonder when those houses will be finished, when they’ll be sold and when I’ll see families coming in and out of them.  More than that, I wonder when I’ll be face to face with you in person from a stage.

On this particular Monday morning I grieve for one of Denver’s most loved venue owners, Sandra Holman Watts  – owner of Live at Jacks – who tearfully announced via video that she has had to close her venue permanently.

In the meantime, some local venues and rehearsal studios have figured out ways to produce live streaming events with full production.  And of course musicians are still sending out good vibes from their homes.

Colorado legacy artist Hazel Miller is hosting a House Party For Hope on the Big Head Todd & the Monsters Facebook page on May 17th. Hazel’s live show from home will benefit the Inner City Health Center and Hunger Free Colorado.

One bit of good news – besides producing this show for you weekly from my home studio, I am also an on air host at 105.5 The Colorado Sound KJAC Greeley.  I host Saturday 8AM to 12PM and Sunday 5PM-8PM.  I haven’t been on since early March.  I will return to my Saturday morning shift next Saturday, May 16.
