Colorado Playlist S10 EP12 2016

LATE … it’s Tuesday morning.  Something happened that interrupted my morning yesterday.

Okay .. this is just plain weird.  I woke up with the Bangles, Just Another Manic Monday, ringing in my head – and NO, it’s not Colorado music so I have no idea how it got there.  But another manic Monday makes sense … if Sunday was my “funday.”  I got to hang out with old friends while judging this season’s run to the IBC, put on by the Colorado Blues Society.

Hands down, A.J. Fullerton won best in class for me – playing to the tradition of the blues without interjecting classic rock and/or rhythm & blues and soul into the style.  Expect to hear his skillz on the Colorado Playlist in coming episodes.

The CBS/IBC finals will be held on May 2 at the Buffalo Rose in Golden.  I will be absent, after experiencing considerable anxiety yesterday from the re-socialization process after the passing of my wife in February.  Much love to my friends who will be there competing, and enjoying  the musicianship of some of the best of the local blues scene.

BREAK:  went to the gym – and did NOT listen to music – I listened to sports talk radio … really Broncos’ talk radio.  I’m home now, listening to a preview of the new Angie Stevens & the Beautiful Wreck album, Beautiful & True, her first in seven years.

Right this moment, it’s a revisit on an Angie Stevens standard – Heaven Knows – delivered this go ’round with a far greater sense of urgency and emotional reach than I’ve ever heard from her before.

Angie’s duet with Gregory Alan Isakov, Sweet Emily, is destined to be a “hit” with each artists’ fanbase – and will no doubt insure more new fans for both.  It’s definitely one of the most worthy duets in Colorado music, in my memory, delivered as poignantly as only two friends might achieve together.

Angie is surrounded by a new lineup – with the exception of drummer Carlos Newman, who’s been with Angie for over a decade now.  Newcomers to the Beautiful Wreck, since we last saw the band, include Ali Frankfurt (bass), Mackenzie Lerchen (violin) and Virginia Brightman (backup vocals).  Guests include co-producer John Macy (pedal steel) and former BW keyboardist Jon Wirtz.

It may have taken seven years, but for fans of Angie Stevens and for fans of Colorado Americana-country-folk, the wait is worth it.  While she considers the effort “unpolished” and “raw,” Angie delivers the most complete and best overall album of her career, a tribute to her rural South Dakota meets Colorado country heart.

MONDAY MORNING MUSIC MEETING

I did not conceive of this idea so that it becomes a contest to see which bands can rally their troops to vote in a popularity poll, but rather as a new way for you to discover some new music I played on the show, and give you the chance to let me know which of the tracks you as a listener likes.

If bands rally their troops to vote for them, it undermines the intent of what I had hoped to achieve.  Please don’t do it.  I appreciate the site traffic (down since name change, and wife passing), but not at the expense of hearing what the show listeners really do like – or not.

Unfortunately, neither Solomon Cook nor the Grant Farm have embeds available to share with you this week.  Tyler Grant informed me that the Grant Farm will be releasing a new video next month, to go with the new single “Fill Your Cup.”

Colorado Playlist S10 EP10 2016

Monday morning … NEW MUSIC POLL  this week featuring American Culture, Strawberry Runners, The Blue Rider, Esme Patterson, and the Patient Zeroes.  I have to say it all sounds rather oddly like the sixties to my ears.  It will be interesting to see what your favorites are from this class of retro-pop and rock …

Sorry to say that Radio 94.9 in Northern Colorado has decided to drop the show.  I seriously want to thank long time NoCO radio guru Stu Haskell for inviting me to be a part of things there the past few years.  With me now being on staff at 105.5 The Colorado Sound, and the Colorado Playlist airing on Sunday mornings at 10AM, it did not make sense for 94.9 to continue airing the show.

Colorado Playlist S10 EP09

Boy oh boy .. it sure seems that if it’s not one thing it’s another … two weeks ago I was in New Jersey and couldn’t post up … last Wednesday we lost power for 24 hours and I could not produce a new show … so we ran a repeat (S10 EP08).

Spring is special for music.  I don’t know what it is, and I never have, but it sure seems that folks get the bug to go out roundabout March every year … I’ve seen it for over 20 years now.  March & April … come June?  Yeah, not so much for the summer – that’s outdoor season.  But for now I’m enjoying seeing the rooms full of live music fans at Oskar Blues in Longmont and Lyons where I do sound on Friday and Saturday nights.

Every year I’m asked by about a half dozen entities (cities, venues, festivals) for my take on who’s who and who should be considered for booking … of course it’s a challenging task.  More so now.  The shear volume of skilled, talented and adequately rehearsed acts increases every year.  The number one concern among buyers is, “what’s the draw?”

For national acts the answers can easily be researched via publications like Pollstar.  Locally we don’t have any reliable way of tracking tickets sold, or seats occupied – we have to rely on our eyes, the buzz generated on the street and online.

Seeing packed rooms sure does make my life, and that of my colleagues, a whole lot easier.  Support … Represent … Enjoy … Repeat.

Listen for new music in EP10 … coming your way April 2-9.
