News Notes and Spins – SEPTEMBER 1 2013

chris boni vip 2013It’s official — August is the worst month of the year in terms of blog readership.  I thought maybe we broke the August curse this year, but no…. not even close.  We barely eeked out an increase over last year, hitting 1199 unique page visits … a far bit off our record 2,227 in May, and at 39 unique visits a day we’re really off of the 53 a day average for the year.  I attribute that to the fact that I spend less time writing in August and more time on stage – so look for increased blogging activity in the next few months to make up for it LOL.

The Colorado Sound can now be heard every Sunday morning from 8AM-10AM on Radio 94.9 Coloradowww.radio949colorado.com.  Radio 94.9 has committed to airing 1 Colorado track per hour of programming.  That places this Clear Channel owned property right up on top of the heap with Open Air 1340 and KRFC (Fort Collins) in airing Colorado music.

STATION NEWS & NOTES

KBUT wrapped up another successful summer pledge drive on August 12th. With the support of our family of listeners near and far, KBUT met our goal of $42,000.  KBUT is also in the midst of a capital campaign to cover expenses related to a new transmitter in Gunnison, CO. This 6,500 Watt transmitter (88.7 KGNI) will replace a low-powered translator that currently broadcasts at the same location. KBUT expects to be broadcasting from this more powerful and secure signal sometime in September. More information is available at http://www.kbut.org/powerup

KGNU has hired David Wilson as Station Manager. David is already working part-time training and starts full-time on September 17. Welcome David.

MUSIC NEWS & NOTES

I sent out a couple of new releases in August that feature two of the state’s wonderful female voices – Alysa Kraft from the Patti Fiasco, and Monica Whittington from the Monocle Band.  I also received the new album from Gabrielle Louise – which by all standards should win best packaging of the year.  I was also fortunate enough to work with a few of the best at this year’s Bohemian Nights at New West Fest … including SHEL, Rachel James (Rachel & the Kings), Hayley Helmericks (Snake Rattle Rattle Snake), Erica Brown, and Cassie Taylor – and equally,  Jennifer Lane and Sophie Reed received standing ovations for their performances this year.   So that got me to thinking… what are the top female fronted records right now?

1. Cassie Taylor – Out of My Mind
2. Paper Bird – Rooms
3. The Patti Fiasco – Small Town Lights
4. Finders & Youngberg – I Don’t Want Love You Won’t Give Until I Cry EP (Erin Youngberg is co-lead singer in band)
5. Bonnie & The Clydes – Wrong Side Up
6. SHEL – SHEL
7. Monocle Band – Monocle Band
8. Esme Patterson – All Princes, I
9. Ending People – Fill Your Lungs
10. The Whiskey Bottles – Grandville

Of course this takes NOTHING away from anyone else – we’re tremendously blessed to have had some of the best female singers, songwriters, and musicians in the country here in CO…

In other news – the Motet is in the studio with Colin Bricker at Mighty Fine Productions in Denver.  Supercollider just wrapped up tracking with Colin.  Leftover Salmon is working on a new album.  String Cheese Incident is working on a new album.  The new Richie Furay is closer to getting to us.  There’s going to be a new Piedmont Brothers Band record that will feature the likes of Rick Roberts, Jock Bartley (Firefall) and Richie Furay… Sean Kelly of the Samples thinks the new record will be done right after the first of the year, and there’s a new album coming out from Chris Daniels featuring Freddie Gowdy of Freddi & Henchi fame… I’d look for that one maybe next spring, but Chris HAS been known to surprise, so we’ll see.

rusty youngFormer Denverite, and Denver native Rusty Young, who still rocks “Denver” as home on his Facebook page, has been inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame – and right on the plague it says “Rusty Young grew up playing steel guitar in country bands around Denver…”  No doubt he’ll eventually wind up in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame as well.  Rusty has also just released another Poco record, “All Fired Up,” although he’s the only member of the original gang that appears – making it a weak “Poco” release, but a pretty damned strong Rusty Young release.

VIDEO PICKS – AUGUST

This month’s PICK-7 includes jazz guitarist Matt FullerDanielle Ate the Sandwich, Colorado Springs hip-hop The ReMinders, the Raven & the Writing Desk, Andy Palmer, SHEL, and Sean Kennedy.

NEWS NOTES & SPINS AUG 1 2013

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013722.  Multiply 1 x 24 hrs x 7 days x 4.3 weeks …that’s how much Colorado music can be aired in one month, if a station played only one cut per hour.  If one song got played 3 times in 24 hours it would receive 90 spins in one month.  That’s a remarkable number as I look at the spins data from this past month.

OpenAir 1340 spun Gregory Alan Isakov‘s new album, The Weatherman,  92 times in July.  After that there isn’t any comparison at all.  It’s actually pretty rare to see a Colorado album get even 30 spins in a month at any public / community or college station.

Pretty Lights latest, A Color Map of the World, had the most impressive gains of the month – in radio and in sales.  In radio it jumped from #30 to #2 on the strength of repetitive spins at KRCC (Colorado Springs).  In sales it was announced that the vinyl record went #1 nationally, while overall physical and digital album sales placed them in the TOP 40 nationally.  Ironically, the album scored nowhere as many spins as Isakov’s record did at 1340 ..

Halden Wofford & the Hi*Beams lays righteous claim to #1 “country” band in Colorado status with their now 5th album “Rocky Mountain Honky Tonk” rocking a debut at #5, with 6 of our 14 reporting stations showing spins this month.

It’s notable that only KRFC (Fort Collins) and OpenAir 1340 are presently in the 722+ cuts of CO music a month club.  And if all goes according to the buzz, there will soon be a commercial radio station committed to the same kinds of numbers – with much higher per month rotations per song than we see now.

722 … a remarkable number.

I updated the entire rotation at The Colorado Sound Live365.  Check out the schedule page to see when the TOP 40 is playing.  I posted the current rotation of artists here.  The Colorado Sound Live365 is the only 24/7/365 all Colorado (and Colorado connected) music station online (that I know of).  So, if you’re in the mood to catch 20 mins of some Rocky mountain goodness, tune in .. and share, pls.  It’s different than the show I do weekly.  That show features the latest breaking music, news and notes from around the scene – so catch both as often as you can 😉

One more major festival this season for me –> Bohemian Nights at New West Fest.  Aug 16-18.  I’m stoked.  This is the 9th year now for this event.  And aside from the big national acts who are brought in to anchor the event, it’s the insane representation of acts from here in Colorado that gets me giddy.  The Samples come off a summer filled with successful regional festival shows to headline the Friday night kick-off show with Fierce Bad Rabbit, SHEL, and Samuel Mouton.  Born In the Flood does one of their reunion shows this summer to open for Ben Harper & Charlie Musslewhite on Saturday night … and Colorado Music Hall of Fame inductee (November) Chris Daniels brings his Better Days show to the Mountain Ave stage to open for Leon Russell on Sunday.  In between?  Download the app …

Hell Must Have Frozen Over I Think

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013Most radio stations don’t play “local” music – and if and when they do it’s largely a highly popular act and the total volume of local music played is well under 1% of the total catalog.

The average number of songs per hour on a typical commercial station will come out to about 10 … maybe 11 if there’s a light commercial load …maybe 12 at nights/over nights.  Non-commercial stations such as KRFC (Fort Collins) or KUNC (Greeley) will typically play 12-13 songs per hour for most shows.  Most non-comm stations air less than 1 “local” cut per hour .. with KRFC (Fort Collins) and Open Air 1340 (Denver) being the exceptions regionally.

All that said, if a commercial station decided to air just one cut per hour that would equal 8-10% of their mix — an astronomical value given the history of commercial radio in airing local music at all to begin with… to expect 2 per hour or 20% of the mix .. well that borders on complete and utter insanity, right?  Hmmm.

A couple of years ago (almost 3 now really) I drove from Hartford south along I95 to Virginia and then west along some back roads to  I40 … to New Mexico and then up the inside route of Colorado up to Denver.  It was an 8 day road trip and being a “radio guy” I listened to a great deal of what this country offers in the way of programming.

Of course I also took 12 hours of CO music with me as well, along with some fav Americana/alt-country stuff.  It was September.  It was football season – and there’s a lot of sports talk radio … but in reality, there’s mostly religious radio.  There isn’t too much in the way of “cool” music out there… fo’sho’

We are spoiled here in Colorado.  I’ve spent my entire radio career in NoCO, with a brief six month first-gig stint in Roswell NM in ’78.  At one time every label of any size had a promo office in Denver or Boulder.  This was where the AAA radio format grew wings, and the New or Alternative Rock format took shape … KBCO for AAA, KTCL for ALT.

There were also some pretty heady experiments such as KDEN, which had originally been KYOU (Greeley) – today it’s called Willie or the Wolfe or something like that.  KDEN was a very early Americana/Folk station… very acoustic, very laid back … very short lived.  That was about ’90-’91.

KSQI (96.1 K-SKY, Greeley/Fort Collins), the station I was at (88-91), was also known for “taking chances” with the content.  All in all there’s been a lot of great radio done in this region over the decades — more than in some other fairly progressive areas in fact.

So, I’m driving home tonight from emceeing the Thursday Night Downtown Concert Series in Fort Collins, and I decide to listen to the radio instead of an internet station (The Colorado Sound of course … silly).  I flip on this new station, Radio949.  It’s not a strong signal, though clean, it only hits mile marker 252 going south before it crashes out.  Radio949 is a Clear Channel station … booooooooooooo right?  Hmmm.

Yeah, not so much boooo… a good friend said to me tonight she listened to 949 today but didn’t know very much of what they played.  I knew almost nothing of what they were playing – but then I haven’t listened to anything remotely pop and non-CO in over a decade now.  So it all sounds new and alien to me anyway <shrug>.

After 949 crashed out I dialed up KUNC at 91.5.  I didn’t know most of what they played – although I recognized Otis Taylor in there … and I think I heard a new (?) Steve Earle cut.  The differences between the two stations is in texture … 949 has a more rock edge… more popular in tone and texture.  More Matchbox Twenty, less Steve Earle.  KUNC is more Steve Earle and no Matchbox Twenty.  While driving down 25, both were very enjoyable experiences…

Let me not forget the incredible efforts of KRFC (Fort Collins) and KCSU (Fort Collins)… both of which offer compelling non-pop/non-commercial programming, typically to highly niche audiences .. KCSU out on the edges of rock/pop, hip-hop/rap, metal, punk, EDM, etc … and KRFC out along the edges of Americana/AAA and Colorado music… KRFC plays more Colorado music than any other station in the state by 10x as much as the statewide average.

I said I think hell has frozen over … where else in the country has the kind of radio that exists in Northern Colorado right now?  Where else in the country are there four stations that feature “local” music in their daily mix?  Where else in the country is a Clear Channel owned station willing to take a chance by committing somewhere between 10 & 20% of their hourly air time to “local” music?

Go ahead, queue up the stations … KUNC, KRFC, KCSU, and Radio949 … do it between 9AM and 2PM, and again between 9PM and midnight .. that’s when all the stations are airing music at the same time.  How long before you bump into something local?  Bet it ain’t long.  That’s why hell must have frozen over.
