NEWS NOTES and SPINS APRIL 1 2013

chrisk w new hat

April 1 2013.  This site hit a record number of unique visitors and page views for the month of March, year to year.  March was officially the 1st month of the 4th year of this blog.  So far it’s been a pretty cool ride all the way around, with the blog averaging some 1500 unique views a month and the show heard six days a week on five stations, across numerous broadcast radio frequencies throughout the state.

Thanks to the wise council of a very good friend in the broadcast world, the time has come for a change.  A build-out is happening as I write this.  I’ve decided to add another dimension in getting some of the best music in our state to you 24/7/365… on your pc, pad, or smartphone.  That said, I just moved into the realm of needing to raise revenue to support this build-out.

Beginning this month I’ll be doing outreach to fund this endeavor.  I will be accepting a limited number of for-profit and non-profit underwriting sponsorships, and will be researching grants and other forms of revenue.  Watch for a funding and sponsorship page to launch, as well as an updated station page in the next week or so.  In the meantime, here’s a taste of what’s to come…  check out cuts from this month’s TOP 40.

Thank you for the dozens of well wishes and kind thoughts I’ve received this past month.  I’ve received several invitations to do marathons and bike-athons and more when I hit 60 in two years LOL.  I totally intend to make it happen.

Speaking of well wishes and kind thoughts …it’s been kinda funny to have folks from NoCo call or text me that they heard my voice on a commercial for the Fort Collins’ Downtown Business Association.  I’ve been doing their voice-over work since February.  The spots air on several commercial stations in NoCo.

Have a green April 🙂

STATION NEWS

KUNC LOGOYou been listening at all to what KUNC has been up to?  I hope so. (click to open music page)

I was visiting my therapist (yes, goats do well under some therapy LOL) recently and mentioned KUNC.  Her reaction surprised me a bit actually — she said she didn’t like classical music, so didn’t listen to KUNC.  Not only has the station changed the sound of the daytime mix, with music director Benji McPhail and long-timer Wendy Wham rockin the desk from 9-2, they’ve also added an additional 3 hours of music programming Mon-Fri from 9-midnight.  This is some of the most adventurous adult format music programming we’ve had in this area for a very long time.  I think it best reflects what many of us old-timers recall as the best and more progressive years at stations like KBCO, KTCL (when they were still in Fort Collins), KYOU turned KDEN (about 1990), KFML and KCUV among maybe one or two more.  Add to that a statewide reach on multiple frequencies and popular NPR programming.

KVNF logoAward winning rural service network, KVNF Community Radio, seeks a forward thinking and creative General Manager to lead our mission driven broadcast organization into the future.  We are looking for a well-organized leader who combines strong communication and managerial skills with a vision for making community radio essential.  KVNF offers the General Manager an excellent opportunity to work with a committed Board of Directors and enthusiastic staff, while leading an outstanding community broadcast organization into the future.

Established in 1979, KVNF provides eclectic music, news, public affairs, arts and entertainment programming 24/7 for a multi-aged audience that is culturally and economically diverse. Headquartered in the town of Paonia, KVNF offers a professional work environment in a 6,000 square foot, inspiring state-of-the art broadcast facility.  From spectacular alpine vistas to sandstone canyons and world class river rafting KVNF’s listening area offers high quality living.

For a complete description visit our website www.kvnf.org. No Phone calls please. KVNF is an equal opportunity employer with a commitment to a fair and diverse workplace.

KBUT-Colorado-public-radioKBUT Community Radio is seeking a year-round, part-time Underwriting Director. Primary job duty is to sell underwriting sponsorships of KBUT programs to Gunnison Valley businesses and organizations. Check www.kbut.org for a complete job description and more information.  Music and Web Director Grant McFarren is set to go full-time by adding Membership Director to his list of responsibilities. Grant has been a part-time KBUT employee since 2010, DJ since 2007, and was a Board Member 2008-2010.

KBUT has also announced that it will participate in the second annual Public Radio Music Month, a month‐long initiative in April 2013 that celebrates public radio stations’ invaluable role in America’s music culture.

cropped-prmm_webheaderPublic Radio Music Month is a nationwide initiative that connects local public radio stations, artists and audiences in communities across the United States.  Throughout the month of April, public radio stations around the state will emphasize special music programming in support of Public Radio Music Month.

Please call, email, text, or message your local community radio station and thank them for supporting Colorado music as part of their programming.  It means a hellova lot when YOU make the call.  Not everyone contributes monetarily; we all know that – doesn’t mean you’re not supporting.  Thank you for listening.

cprLogoApril marks the 10-year anniversary of “Colorado Spotlight,” Colorado Public Radio (CPR) Classical’s flagship program that features the state’s major classical organizations through performances, interviews and live broadcasts. “Colorado Spotlight” is hosted by Charley Samson and airs Monday – Friday and Sunday at 7 p.m.

“When we first started ‘Colorado Spotlight’ in 2003, the classical community was much smaller, and we weren’t sure if we’d have enough local content to produce a daily show,” said Samson. “Now, we have literally hundreds of live and recorded performances to choose from, a true testament to the strength of the classical community here in Colorado and of the music enthusiasts who continue to support it.”

“Colorado Spotlight’s” long-lasting partnerships with the state’s leading classical organizations like the Colorado Symphony, Opera Colorado, Central City Opera, Colorado Music Festival, Bravo! Vail Valley and Aspen Music Festivals provide a prominent statewide stage presence through recordings, in-depth interviews and live broadcasts.

Over 400 classical artists have visited the CPR Performance Studio, sharing intimate live and recorded performances and interviews that reveal personal insight and their own interpretation of the music. CPR’s Performance Studio features state-of-the-art recording capabilities, along with a nine-foot Steinway concert grand piano that was funded by the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation. Artists that have visited the space include Joshua Bell, Sir James Galway and Eugenia Zukerman.

To commemorate 10 years in the community, Samson will air a weeklong showcase of some of the program’s most memorable interviews and performances, beginning Monday, April 1 through Friday, April 5. The celebration will culminate on Sunday, April 7 with a two-hour live broadcast from the CPR Performance Studio featuring the Ivy Street Trio, the Colorado Chamber Players and others.

“Colorado Spotlight” 10-Year Anniversary Celebration Schedule, April 1-5, 7 at 7 p.m.

NEWS NOTES and SPINS – March 1, 2013

grizzly goat adamsSunday March 3rd.  I’m a couple of days behind schedule.  Could just be the three days that February was shorted at birth.  After successfully blowing up the Y-T-D stats for unique visits in January, we lost some ground in February.  That’s cool, we still had over 40 unique visits a day on average here – not counting the activity that takes place at my FB page.

I’ve been reworking a couple of the other pages here – notably the Rocky Mountain Music Network page, which is where you can find a listing of the records I’ve sent to radio and print media in CO on behalf of artists since 2008.  Very happy to announce that the new Lisa Bell and WhiteWaterRamble releases are on the list for this  year.  There are a few more pending so stay tuned for those.

There were 28 new adds in February.  There were 27 in January.  At this rate we’d wind up with 330-360 releases being tracked for the year … which is about right.   Estimates being what they are, “we” (those of us who talk about such things) think there’s about 500 records a year released in the state from an estimated 2000 acts (from solo to full orchestra).  12 of the 28 debuts wound up in the TOP 40 most spun in February… more will likely show up in the TOP 40 for March.  I was very happy to see my friend Jon Wirtz’s new record “Tourist” do so well OTB (out of the box).  I think his debut at #7 may be the highest debut for a jazz record I’ve ever logged.

On a personal note:  I have entered a new phase in my life.  I’ve long wondered if I could enjoy a physical fitness lifestyle.. biking, working out, eating “good” (healthy) foods, not drinking, not smoking, etc … So I hit the switch in my brain and embarked on a new lifestyle.  And no, I didn’t give up the green .. a goat does need one vice LOL.  But you are likely to see me out biking this spring and summer with some buddies – or at the gym … I started at 172-174.  I’m at 161 five weeks in with a goal by Aug 1 of 145-148 and a goal by the time I hit 60 (two more years) of either a running marathon or a bike marathon.  Question:  can 60 year olds rock a sixpack?  Hmmm… guess we’ll find out.  Live healthy my friends .. catch you on the airwaves or at a show.

Do take a 30 minute break from the day and enjoy my video picks of the month.

STATION NEWS

KUNC LOGOMarch 1st marks the end of an era at KUNC (Greeley).  Nancy D’Albergaria, KUNC’s Development Director since January, 2008, is retiring. Though Nancy has been on staff for only 5 years, her involvement with the station dates back to the early 90’s, when she began as a volunteer, along with her husband Thom and their children Sean and Ann.

Nancy soon became a member of the KUNC Community Advisory Board, and served as its chair. In February 2001, Nancy co-chaired the Friends of KUNC group that raised $2 million in 20 days to purchase KUNC’s license from the University of Northern Colorado, creating Community Radio For Northern Colorado (CRNC) and ensuring that KUNC continued as an independent station.

She went on to serve on the board of CRNC from 2001-2007, including a term as board chair. Nancy’s commitment and many contributions to KUNC over the years have been invaluable in creating the station that we are today. We wish her well as she embarks on her future travels.

Carrie Saldo will be joining KUNC and RMPBS starting April 1st, as an  an arts and culture reporter (in conjunction with Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO). For the past 2 years Carrie has been the host, writer and producer of “Connecting Point” – a nightly, 30 minute interview program on PBS member station WGBY-TV in Springfield, MA. Carrie also spent 3 years at WAMC public radio in Albany, NY as the Berkshire Bureau Chief.

Luke Runyon of Aspen Public Radio will officially be joining KUNC as their first Agribusiness Reporter on Monday, March 11th (in conjunction with Harvest Public Media, a network of stations across the midwest that does Grassroots reporting on food, fuel and field (http://harvestpublicmedia.org/). Luke spent the past 18 months  working in Aspen covering general assignment, environmental and land use stories. He is already a familiar voice on our airwaves because of our collaboration with RMCR (Rocky Mountain Community Radio) and He’s also been featured on NPR several times.

KVNF logoSally Kane, executive director for KVNF (Paonia), is stepping down from her position in June to look for new life opportunities.  In her email out to RMCR (Rocky Mountain Community Radio) stations, Sally writes “We’ll be posting for my replacement and for a news position in the next couple of weeks. I’m still here for awhile so this won’t be the last you hear from me…”  Sally first appeared on the air at KVNF when she was a high school student in 1980, and has long been considered one of RMCR’s brightest executive directors. Founded in 1979, starting with 10 watts of power in a garage on a mesa overlooking the town of Paonia, KVNF has grown to serve parts of 6 rural counties with two transmitters and seven translators and thousands of watts of power.

KRFCBREAKING NEWS ADDED an hour AFTER I published …. thanks to Andrew Schneider for the update.  KRFC Development Director Danielle Hastings announced her resignation at the end of January.  She is now at FoCoMA now as their full time seasonal marketing/communications and volunteer person.  KRFC is now looking for a full time Development Director.  Full details and downloadable application at http://www.krfcfm.org/about-krfc/jobs/.   Essentially, this is a full time, 40 hour gig that pays $30,000 a year + commission to the right person.  The successful candidate should have a minimum of a Bachelors degree in a related field and/or relevant experience, with experience generating operating revenues in a corporate, nonprofit or institutional setting. Knowledge of the public radio mission and its diverse audience is an advantage, as is demonstrated success in fundraising and/or grant writing for nonprofit programs along with demonstrated success in community and professional networking.  The application deadline is March 14.

Happy Birthday Vector IllustrationHAPPY BIRTHDAY … here I thought that only one station in Colorado was having a 10 year birthday party — and lo and behold there are two.  Happy 10th birthday to KHEN (Salida) and KRFC (Fort Collins).

Locally-focused community radio, KRFC, hit Ft. Collins airwaves on March 1, 2003.  KRFC will be hosting their 10th birthday party on April 6th featuring Great American Taxi, Mama Lenny & The Remedy, and a double dose of Michael Kirkpatrick from The Holler!

KHEN held their 10th birthday party in a new location in Salida on March 2nd.  Don’t know what those folks are up to down there, but the website at http://www.khen.org hasn’t been updated since late last summer.  Hope they get it fixed so we can all enjoy knowing what they’re playing..

News Notes and Spins – February 1, 2013

Goat Jan 20122013 marks my 40th year dj’ing in one way or another.  Officially – professionally – I’ve been in radio since my first paycheck in 1977, so I have four more years before I celebrate my official 40th anniversary on the airwaves.  But, it was 1973, as a graduating high school senior, that I first laid a needle to a record for the purposes of making people smile and dance.  Now of course, in my world it’s all digital – but I digress.  You know that old saying, “never judge a book by its cover?”  Well, never judge a music lover by the hat he wears LOL.  I may love my cowboy hats, but you’re as likely to see me bopping to some hip-hop as well as some authentic roots country – unless you’re screaming or being outright violent… that’s where the line gets drawn for me.  And here in Colorado, a place I’ve called home most of my life now, there’s more than enough great music of all flavors to enjoy – regardless of the hat you wear (or not).

Congratulations to KRFC on their 10th Anniversary.   No station plays more music from here in the state than they do.  See their website at www.krfcfm.org for information about upcoming celebratory events.

Congratulations to KGNU‘s Sam Fugua, who’s been a part of that station for over 20 years and is now stepping down as station manager.    According to his email, Sam is looking “…for other professional opportunities in public media or the broader non-profit world in Boulder/Denver.”

KGNU IS SEEKING A STATION MANAGER

KGNU—a community radio station with studios in Boulder and Denver, CO—seeks a Station Manager to lead our mission-driven broadcast and online media organization.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to public media and substantial experience leading diverse communities in pursuit of the common good.

We are seeking an individual who combines strong communications, managerial and development skills with a vision for making local community media essential in a changing world.

KGNU is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We encourage applications from all genders, people of color, and people with disabilities.

Our ideal candidate will have the following combination of required and desired skills:

Required Qualifications:

  • At least five years experience managing people and programs in non-profit organizations, including working with volunteers
  • Demonstrated successful fundraising experience, including membership campaigns, individual donor development and grant writing
  • Knowledge of noncommercial broadcast rules and regulations, including all Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) requirements
  • Demonstrated budget development, financial acumen, and fiscal management skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Familiarity with and commitment to the KGNU Mission Statement

Additional Desired Skills:

  • Understanding of community radio
  • Community radio programming experience
  • Strategic planning and implementation experience
  • Experience working with non-profit boards
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

Salary is $47,500 annually and is non-negotiable. The position includes paid health insurance and vacation. This job will be based at KGNU’s Boulder office and requires travel to our Denver office at least once per week.

To apply, please submit the following materials by email and postal mail:

1)     A cover letter that specifically addresses the job requirements and outlines qualifications
2)     A current resume
3)     The names, addresses, daytime telephone numbers and email addresses for three professional references

The position will remain open until filled. For full consideration, please apply by Friday, Feb. 22, 2013. Email to job@kgnu.org and mail to KGNU Station Manager Search Committee, 4700 Walnut St., Boulder, CO 80301. No phone calls please.

CHANGES IN REPORTING PROCEDURES
When you look at the Station By Station listing you’ll notice something new.  [titles reported =___].  I spend a few days every month scouring every single playlist at some stations, while others provide me a list of current titles they played in the reporting period.  So, for instance, for the Jan spins chart, I scoured any and all records released from Nov 2011 thru Jan 2013.  Next month, I’ll only look for titles that came out from Dec 2011 thru Feb 2013.  You’ll not only see what records are getting the most love at a station, but also how many “current year” releases are getting played.  Props to KRFC and Open Air 1340 for being the #1 and #2 station respectively in number of current titles getting aired.
