CP S12 EP18 2018

Colorado Symphony, now operating in the black, catches break on rent for city-owned Boettcher Concert Hall. According to the article in the Denver Post, the Colorado Symphony ended the year in the black for the first time since a 2011 internal review declared it was on the brink of disaster.  As a result, the Denver City Council voted to provide the symphony savings of $166k a year in the way of free office space and cheaper rent to use Boettcher Concert Hall.  Follow the link for more info.

Gasoline Lollipops will soon have a new sound and a new drummer.  Adam Perry, who was also once the drummer for the Yawpers as they were emerging in the scene, has announced he’s leaving the band to put more efforts into his job at a Boulder law firm, writing for Westword, and his now 8 year old daughter.  Band leader Clay Rose says the sound of the band will morp into more spacey and psychedelic themes.  The story was first reported in the Boulder Beat.

Last week I reported on the death of Denver Joe.  In the meantime, long time friend and Denver musician Marty Jones wrote a terrific tribute to Joe for Westword.

CS S12 EP 17 2018

This was a bittersweet weekend.  After reporting in my show this week that long time Denver Cap-Hill icon Denver Joe passed away, I attended a memorial at 3 Kings Tavern on Saturday.

It was very nice to see some old friends, many of whom I haven’t seen in a decade – since the Cricket on the Hill closed in 2008.  Among those in attendance was Bob Rupp, former owner of Rupp’s Drums, and still a major supporter of the scene locally.

According to Bob and his wife, he’s been dealing with stage four cancer the past couple of years, that originated as a form of brain cancer, and metastasized into other parts of his body.  Fortunately, Bob has been taking a highly targeted medication that has seemingly stopped the cancer in its tracks.  Anyone who’s known Bob over the years knows of his insanely positive outlook on life.  It was in full display on Saturday.

House concerts.  Ever gone to one?  For those of us into singer-songwriters, or non-amplified acoustic based music, house concerts provide an option from more established types of venues that often are too noisy, program start times too late, and provide little in comfort.

Unfortunately, since house concerts are invitation based events you won’t find a calendar that promotes them.  I’ve been or participated in two this season so far – both with about 25-30 audience members.  Highly enjoyable.

Speaking of non-amplified acoustic music – I had breakfast at the Bacon Social House on W. 44th in Denver this weekend, and noticed they’re seeking approval to include that on their premises.  Acoustic musicians may want to keep an eye on that as it develops.

CS S12 EP16 2018

FOCOMX has come and gone for another year.  In the ten years I’ve been going it’s usually as one of the production crew – running sound and stage in one of the rooms.  Not this year.  This year I was performing – in Denver on Friday night and in my band’s third annual appearance at FOCOMX on Saturday night.

Incredibly summer like weather produced what looked like a record number of people out and about on Saturday evening.  Our first stop was to see Jeff Finlin at Avogadro’s .. and the 100 cap seated room was standing room only at 4PM.

I managed to catch sets or parts of from Novalectric, J Shogren Shanghai’d from WY who I’ve wanted to see for many years, Last Call Romance and a couple of others before I turned into something other than a goat.

Our own set at Tony’s Rooftop was very well attended and received by the crowd.  Couldn’t ask for more.  Thanks and congratulations to the folks at FOCOMA (Fort Collins Musicians Assoc) for an incredible 10th Anniversary.

One incredibly sad bit of news to pass along this week is the passing of Denver Joe – a character on Capitol Hill for as long as I can remember – especially as the doorman at the infamous Cricket on the Hill.  Local musician Chris Rail Chamberlayne wrote some of the best tribute to Joe this weekend on his FB page.
