The Colorado Sound S9 EP38 2015

(EDITED:  4:20PM) This is not a very happy day for our scene.  Gary Lee Bomar, owner of Gary Lee’s Motor Club and Grub on South Broadway in Denver, has reportedly passed away from injuries sustained recently in an accident in Mexico.

According to a FB post that came across Sunday, from Gary Lee’s sister Tiffany;  “Gary Lee Bomar passed away this afternoon surrounded by his family and close friends. This is a finality that we never could have imagined. We have done our best to keep you all updated through this tragedy. We are now asking for PRIVACY to mourn the loss of our son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. We will post arrangements when we have them made. Thank you for your kindness.”

Prior to receiving news that Gary Lee Bomar had passed away, I received word that Denver bluesman JD Kelly has been moved to hospice care.   I've known JD since the '80s when he fronted JD Kelly & the Love Bandits and played regularly at Linden's in Fort Collins.  More recently he appeared as second vocalist and trombonist in Eef & the Blues Express.  He and Blues Express keyboardist Jimmy Ayers were diagnosed with stage four cancer this summer.  According to friends in the scene, JD had stopped chemo treatments recently.

[EDIT] JD Kelly passed away today from colon cancer.  RIP.  😦

I met Gary Lee once, so I cannot say I knew him.  I do, however, know many of his friends – musicians all – some well known to us in the scene.  The outpouring of love and support on FB this day is evidence enough of what he meant to so many.  RIP Gary Lee Bomar.

Changes afoot at Avogadro’s Number in Fort Collins.  Liz Evans is out as talent buyer/in house promoter according to a post she made on FB this weekend.

The Colorado Sound S9|EP33 Aug/Spt 2015

Monday morning: post workout.  I had an exhilarating weekend.  I cannot recount how many local cd release shows I’ve attended or been a part of in my career.  Megan Burtt’s show Saturday night at the Oriental ranks at the top of my list, if for nothing less than the overall national level professional quality of the stage presentation, and musicianship on display.  Sunday’s benefit event for Colorado blues legend JD Kelly pushed the weekend’s emotion quotient over the top.

It should be no secret to anyone who has followed me the past several years that I am a Megan Burtt fan, and have championed her music since her debut coming out of Berklee.   Her latest though, the Bargain, is altogether at another level in her already stellar local career.  The album, the show, the new retail merchandise (a guitar strap line?? f’ng brilliant) – the signing with Sweetwine Entertainment Group – she’s certainly ready for it.  #winnerbestcdreleaseshow

We talk a lot about “scene” and “music community.”  Nowhere was that more on display than at the JD Kelly benefit, at the Rusty Bucket in Lakewood yesterday.  According to FB posts late last night and this morning over $7000 was raised to help JD with expenses related to being treated for stage 4 colon cancer.  Bandmate Jimmy Ayers has been dealing with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.  The Rusty Bucket hosted a benefit on July 19th for Jimmy, that I’ve heard was just as well attended – and contributed to.

Blues Express bassist Glenn Tapia posted on FaceBook:

BIG UPS to the Colorado Blues Society – yesterday they announced that the Members Choice Award for best horn player is now and will forever be named “The JD Kelly Award”. JD was given a framed award commemorating the CBS award being in his name. That was an awesome moment. He was really loved and touched by that gesture.

BIG UPS to Billy Hoke for winning $600 on the 50/50 Raffle and instantly donating it all back to JD. That was a very selfless gesture on your part.

BIG UPS to all the help we had and all the performers who came to play out of love for JD and only for the music and community. There are far too many to name individually but it’s safe to say that yesterday was rich in local talent and regular blues supporters.

BIG BIG BIG UPS to the Colorado blues community for raising over $7000 for JD yesterday You all were all very generous with your own money to give to JD. The community was raging with love and friendship last night as the Rusty Bucket bounced and bumped all day with feel-good music and vibrant people.”

(Monday Aug 24) The gym is closed for a week for maintenance.  They forgot that I need maintaining too LOL.  Sheesh.  Okay, so the weekend was uneventful.  About the best thing that happened was me being invited to perform on Sept 11 and 12 as part of the RimRock Music & Camping Festival in Conifer, along with several other solo acts in the hospitality tent.  Main stage acts include Kyle Hollingsworth, Dragondeer, the Drunken Hearts, In the Whale and others.  So Miss Pattie and I will be there instead of going on a road trip the following weekend to Telluride and Durango, that something always seems to prevent from happening.

There will not be an Offstage Beyond the Music for September.  The festival season got the best of all of us and I was not able to schedule a time to go sit with a friend and chat.  Look for the return of OSBTM in October.  In the meantime, here’s the final segment of my conversation with award winning blues musician and educator Dan Treanor.

GOATZ!  SHOWS

GOATZ LOGOTHURS SEPT 10 w/ Jimbo Darville & the Truckadours + Daniella Katzir @ the Walnut Room in Denver

FRI & SAT SEPT 11 & 12RimRock Music & Camping Festival in Conifer (solo tent / 30 min sets) featuring Kyle Hollingsworth Band, Dragondeer, The Drunken Hearts, In the Whale and more.

SUN SEPT 13 w/ Kerry Pastine & the Crime Scene @ Avogardro’s Number in Fort Collins — this is (tentatively) the final show of the season with one of my best pals and one of the absolutely BEST pedal steel players in the state, Chris Kennison.  To say that I’ll miss him after today is a gross understatement, as he returns to AZ for the winter to play in the Arizona Opry.

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

It’s not very often an opening happens in my limited sponsorships.  I’m sorry to say that Colorado Case Company will be leaving the show at the end of August.  Chuck Grewe has been a friend since he played with me in a band in the early 90s.  Along the way his brother Bill and I got to be pretty good friends also.  Thanks to the both of them for their support the past 18 months.  I wish them considerable good fortune as they move forward with their business.  Email me at chriskmusic@gmail.com for more information about getting your event and/or business name heard statewide on The Colorado Sound.
