The Colorado Sound S7 EP37 OCT 2013

Goat_Logo_color_on_whiteThis week’s playlist features a couple of acts made up of some folks I’ve had the pleasure of following musically for the past fifteen years.  Equally Challenged features guys who were in established Fort Collins bands like Fatty Jenkins, Brakeman Junction, and Zonky Tonk Zydeco.  Toad In the Hole is essentially Kristi VanDeWalker, Geoff Morris, and Mark Serratoni from the band Zeut, all of whom I’ve known now since the late 90s.  Also featured this week, the new Nathaniel Rateliff (and what is more or less The Wheel) release…

Video Pick of the Week:  I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention to what’s really popular out of Colorado – and no doubt with over 131-thousand views in just a few days, the new video from former Colorado Springs (Air Force Academy) and Greeley (UNC) resident Tyler Ward qualifies as impressively popular.  Equally, his EP  Hello. Love. Heartbreak. (September 2012) went to #1 across 15 worldwide iTunes singer/songwriter charts.

The Colorado Sound S7 EP36 OCT 2013

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013(Sunday OCT 6 2013)  I spent last night emceeing the Spokesbuzz Bandswap show at Hodi’s Halfnote in Fort Collins.  bandswapColorado bands Common Anomaly, Echo Chamber, and the Epilogues all performed with Madison Wisconsin’s Sexy Ester filling in the middle (that’s didn’t come out right did it? … Hmmmm … better get off this train of thought real fast) .. but the girl did rock a fab mohawk and pretty little red boots … very happy to have been a part of something so cool.  If you haven’t had the chance yet to check out what bandswap is all about, hit the link …

…Spokebuzz will be advancing their newest compilation to radio in November – the official release date set for mid-December I believe.  The current lineup of Spokesbuzz bands is:  Better Thank Bacon, Common Anamoly, Grant Farm, Justin Roth, Lindsey O’Brien Band, Maxwell Hughes, Shatterproof, The Deadwood Saints, The Echo Chamber, the Yawpers, Wasteland Hop, and Winchester Holiday.

I got to chat with Lindsey O’Brien a bit.  We haven’t had any time to catch up since she moved back to Chicago last January – and who is expecting – in January maybe?  She and and guitarist P-Mann were both very excited about a new single they recorded yesterday at the Blasting Room in Fort Collins for the new Spokesbuzz compilation.

So the whole flood thing is far from over and now that the gov’t has partially shut down so too have many of the sources of federal funding meant to help out our friends and neighbors … to that there’s a wonderful compilation out right now that features 28 live tracks from both CO jambands and national ones .. the compilation called River’s Rising: Front Range Flood Relief 2013 was put together by jam scene fixtures and Colorado residents Tony Hume and Annabel Lukins who called upon their musical friends to help flood victims. frontrangealbumcoverThe compilation features 28 live tracks from Colorado bands like Leftover Salmon, Jeff Brinkman, Elephant Revival, String Cheese Incident, DeVotchKa, Yonder Mountain String Band, Head for the Hills, and the Motet, and national jam acts including Furthur, Widespread Panic, Dumpstaphunk, Umphrey’s McGee and Soulive.

Video Pick of the Week

It’s not too often when something comes through here that surprises me – so this brand new effort featuring Shawn King (DeVotchKa) and Stephen Brackett (Flobots) with Boston native Erin McKeown comes through and does just that – surprises me.  This will no doubt be the great “fall season” (3rd quarter?) single of 2013 – although because it’s digital only I don’t expect to see it spun at most of the mountain stations…

The Colorado Sound S7 EP35 SPT/OCT 2013

chris boni vip 2013Sunday Sept 29, 2013:  In two days from now I’m supposed to be publishing my monthly News Notes and Spins column.  I haven’t even begun to put it together.  So, given that I have to leave to do sound today at 4:30PM (Oskar Blues Longmont), and it’s 10:20 as I type this I think I’d better get my ass to work and pull some data. OH — and the Broncos play at 2:25PM … yeah .. it’s gonna be a tough slog to get the column done on time LOL.

support_this_station_125x125Real quick …. if you have not checked it out yet I do hope you will … The Colorado Sound Live365 is where you can listen to Colorado music 24/7 … it’s music based, not information based like the weekly show heard on KRFC (Fort Collins), Radio 94.9 (Loveland/Fort Collins), KWMW (Westcliffe), KOTO (Telluride), or KDNK (Carbondale/Glenwood Springs/Aspen).  The station has been on the air since April 1.  In September we’ve averaged less than 8 streams a day, unlike this blog that averages 52 unique page views a day.. and unlike the terrestrial station based show that averages well over a thousand listeners a week.  I could sure use some help keeping the station on the air, and growing the online listenership.  Please?  Share the stations with friends … put a link on your website so folks know where to hear CO music daily … anything you can do to help. And if you’re a business – yes, I accept advertising.

Please consider making a donation to the cause – every dollar matters – seriously. This one has been coming out of my pocket.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK:  Dennis Wanebo is one of our region’s most enigmatic and disturbingly unknown singer songwriters.  A nearly fatal disease several years ago prompted Dennis to retire from his lucrative law career and focus on his music.  Dude’s music blows me away – but then we’re both a couple of old guys with a penchant for nostalgic themes in our music. 😉 j/s
