NEWS NOTES & SPINS AUG 1 2013

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013722.  Multiply 1 x 24 hrs x 7 days x 4.3 weeks …that’s how much Colorado music can be aired in one month, if a station played only one cut per hour.  If one song got played 3 times in 24 hours it would receive 90 spins in one month.  That’s a remarkable number as I look at the spins data from this past month.

OpenAir 1340 spun Gregory Alan Isakov‘s new album, The Weatherman,  92 times in July.  After that there isn’t any comparison at all.  It’s actually pretty rare to see a Colorado album get even 30 spins in a month at any public / community or college station.

Pretty Lights latest, A Color Map of the World, had the most impressive gains of the month – in radio and in sales.  In radio it jumped from #30 to #2 on the strength of repetitive spins at KRCC (Colorado Springs).  In sales it was announced that the vinyl record went #1 nationally, while overall physical and digital album sales placed them in the TOP 40 nationally.  Ironically, the album scored nowhere as many spins as Isakov’s record did at 1340 ..

Halden Wofford & the Hi*Beams lays righteous claim to #1 “country” band in Colorado status with their now 5th album “Rocky Mountain Honky Tonk” rocking a debut at #5, with 6 of our 14 reporting stations showing spins this month.

It’s notable that only KRFC (Fort Collins) and OpenAir 1340 are presently in the 722+ cuts of CO music a month club.  And if all goes according to the buzz, there will soon be a commercial radio station committed to the same kinds of numbers – with much higher per month rotations per song than we see now.

722 … a remarkable number.

I updated the entire rotation at The Colorado Sound Live365.  Check out the schedule page to see when the TOP 40 is playing.  I posted the current rotation of artists here.  The Colorado Sound Live365 is the only 24/7/365 all Colorado (and Colorado connected) music station online (that I know of).  So, if you’re in the mood to catch 20 mins of some Rocky mountain goodness, tune in .. and share, pls.  It’s different than the show I do weekly.  That show features the latest breaking music, news and notes from around the scene – so catch both as often as you can 😉

One more major festival this season for me –> Bohemian Nights at New West Fest.  Aug 16-18.  I’m stoked.  This is the 9th year now for this event.  And aside from the big national acts who are brought in to anchor the event, it’s the insane representation of acts from here in Colorado that gets me giddy.  The Samples come off a summer filled with successful regional festival shows to headline the Friday night kick-off show with Fierce Bad Rabbit, SHEL, and Samuel Mouton.  Born In the Flood does one of their reunion shows this summer to open for Ben Harper & Charlie Musslewhite on Saturday night … and Colorado Music Hall of Fame inductee (November) Chris Daniels brings his Better Days show to the Mountain Ave stage to open for Leon Russell on Sunday.  In between?  Download the app …

STATION NEWS and NOTES

kgnu logoKGNU is hiring a station manager. Interviews are underway, and there should be an announcement by mid- to late-August. Shawna Sprowls is serving as Interim Station Manager through August.

Shawna’s last day as interim station manger is August 28.  She’s taking a short sabbatical to take care of some personal items and do a little traveling, then will be looking for a job in the Boulder area to start late-Fall, early-Winter. TOP 100 Jan-June 2013

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013

I went back and pulled every single bit of data I had on hand from each of the past six months.  Titles released to and added by radio between Jan 2012 and June 2013 were factored.  It’s my extreme hope that you’re one of the hard core who actively seeks out new music from here in Colorado.

You won’t find everything represented here … there’s no metal, no extreme punk, hard core, rap or other out on the edge types of music. Nor is there any classical or New Age represented.  Sorry …. if it were getting played at any of the stations I monitor it would show up.  And that isn’t to say that there are not independent shows around the state that  do feature those styles by national/international acts.

Same with jazz… there are a lot of jazz shows around the state.  Jazz would definitely have a bigger impact on the charts if more of it was making its way to jazz jocks around the state.  There are always six to ten jazz records out, and outside of KUVO and KRFC I’m just not seeing the spins at other stations… occasionally I’ll spot something on KGNU, but aside from that it’s pretty skinny out there when it comes to Colorado jazz being repped.

(CC) = Colorado Connection = perhaps like Sera Cahoone you were raised here and moved on.  Or the Piedmont Brothers Band that has some of our most classic musicians on their records – even though technically the band is based out of Georgia and Italy.  Tim O’Brien may not live here anymore, but he’s an integral part of our musical history – as is Bob Lind, Javon Jackson, India.Arie, Tia Fuller, Katie Herzig, Judy Collins, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and others.

You may not recognize the names that follow, but  I hope that you’re intrigued enough to search a few out and buy their music.

News Notes & Spins July 1, 2013

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013June 30, 2013.  WoW what a month.  Truthfully the busiest June I’ve ever had, adding to the busiest year I’ve ever had.  Thank you to the Bohemian Foundation, and to the Fort Collins Downtown Business Association for making that so …and to the several bands/artists I’m now working with directly… and to Oskar Blues who I do a fair amount of work for …and to all of the stations in the state now airing the show, along with the new and improving metrics on the website and at The Colorado Sound Live365 and The Colorado Sound TV.  Thank you …seriously.  I mean that.  When my wife and I decided we were going to take this journey 13 years ago I never thought this is where we’d be today.  It’s been a truly remarkable ride so far… and we’re a real long way from being done.

We didn’t get a lot of news from the stations this month.  I know that three, KGNU, KAFM, and KRFC still have HELP WANTED SIGNS out … check out their websites for more information.

In other station news, I reported on this earlier in the month, but it bears repeating.  There is a new radio station in NoCo… Radio 94.9 Colorado.  It’s a small low power 100 watt station with reach into Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, etc .. and according to market manager Stu Haskell (repeatedly) it will have a strong Colorado music accent throughout the day parts – in other words, you’ll hear CO music right up next to some of the biggest names in adult rock nationally.  Submit Your Music To Us   88.9FM KRFC (Fort Collins) is now airing The Colorado Sound on Saturday nights from 8-10PM, with Hour 1 repeated on Tuesday nights from 7-8PM and Hour 2 repeated on Thursday night from 7-8PM.

I’ve updated the playlists at The Colorado Sound Live365 and The Colorado Sound TV.  The radio station is broken down into Hitmakers (classic rock, oldies, classic hits, etc), Funk n Jazz n Nugz (urban contemporary, jazz, soul, funk, hiphop), Rock in the Rockies, CO’mericana,  TOP 40 (current TOP 40 chart as seen here) and a nightime/weekender mix made up of cuts from the other segments.  Check out the schedule here.

So about three weeks ago I put up a poll and asked what your 3 favorite Colorado releases of the year have been so far.  I didn’t get what I wanted out of it.   What I found out is that three or four of the acts have very active fan bases LOL.  However, mid-way through the year, the TOP 3 Colorado releases at Colorado radio are:

  1. DeVotchKa – Live with the Colorado Symphony
  2. The Lumineers – The Lumineers
  3. Otis Taylor – My World Is Gone

This whole thing with WordPress, YouTube, and Live365 is really starting to tickle me in the oh so not really funny kinda way … so, you might just easily go to this link  … where all of them will stream seamlessly for you …. This month’s video pick six = Churchill, Arthur Lee Land, Old Daisy featuring Katy McAllister, Wasteland Hop, Omniism, and Havok.
