2015 LP/EP/SP Titles

Goat_Logo_color_on_whiteOkay .. I have to admit, this has been one seriously messed up year as far as new releases are concerned.  Not only have there been far fewer that I have normally identified by this time of the year, stations have been playing fewer than in the past couple of years.  I’m not sure why this is to be honest.  I realize we don’t track everything .. there’s no metal or rap in this list as nearly all of the stations I survey are of the AAA and/or CMJ format with strong focus on Americana, bluegrass, funk, etc.

I lost all my spin data from Jan through March (Q1) and have only been able to capture spin data in April and May (Q2) … so I have suspended my monthly TOP 40 spins chart for the time being.  With this being my busy season, perhaps I can get back to it again this fall/winter .. we’ll have to wait and see.

There are 138 titles represented in this list.  If you are aware of some titles not on it that should be, please inform me.  I’ve been maintaining this list now for over five years and I’d to keep it as up to date as possible.

Much love,
goat

The Colorado Sound S9 EP26

RDP_1271BWCrushed.  Absolutely crushed.  I’ve never been so busy.  Truth: some days I feel it would be easier to have a “real job” with an expected number of hours, and time off to just do leisurely things.  I enjoy no such luxury as I attempt in my final decades to tell as much of the story as I am able about music and musicians in Colorado.  Well, that and doing sound and/or emceeing and/or producing shows and/or rehearsing with the new lineup of Goatz!, back after a nearly six year hiatus (new recordings and/or videos coming  in August).

Hmmm … seems I slipped into the “Chris abyss” (coined by Morris Beegle from Hapi Skratch Entertainment) on that first paragraph.

I completely and utterly screwed up this month’s edition of Offstage …Beyond the Music with Freddi Gowdy.  I got new equipment last month to solve a long standing production quality issue, and didn’t get it right.  So for July, as we celebrate the one year anniversary of the podcast series, I’ve decided to pull out segments from some of my favorites of the past year .. starting off with one from the very first episode with Chris Daniels last July …

jill-sobuleJill Sobule is one of our native artists who has long gone unnoticed as such among local music fans.  She grew up in Denver, went to St. Mary’s, and to CU before heading off to Spain and other parts on her musical journey. So to lead things off this week I did an artist two-fer with one of her biggest hits, and something from her most recent album “Dottie’s Charms” from 2014 – that was largely influenced by a charm bracelet she found at the bottom of a drawer, “…hung with about 20 pewter charms, including an airplane, the Statue of Liberty and a disc bearing the name Dorothy.”   See playlist below to listen to the song via YouTube.

NEWS NOTES and SPINS MAY 1 2015

Goat_Logo_color_on_whiteI’m approached daily by musicians seeking answers to the mysteries of our industry.  I’m proud to say we live in a state where information and resources are bountiful.

I attended four events in the past month that served no other purpose than to educate, develop, and promote all that is Colorado music, those who make it, and those who work on advancing it; the Denver Music Summit, FOCOMX, the Colorado Blues Society IBC finals, and the induction of six new bands into Spokesbuzz. Of course they’re not the only organizations or events designed for these purposes, but I was fortunate to attend events put on by all four.

Ultimately it is the fan, the audience, the listener, who is the deciding factor when it comes to how well we in the “business” are doing our jobs – and therefore it is important to have that perspective at the table when we’re talking about making music and getting it “out there.”  Audience participation is appreciated.   Please go visit those organizations online and find out what we have going on regionally.

Congratulations to new Spokebuzz bands:  American BlackoutThe BurroughsChemistry ClubGrim & DarlingRed Fox Run and Slow Caves.  They join EldrenGasoline LollipopsiZCALLiPandas & PeopleQbala, and Wiredogs, who are all in the second year of the two year incubation program.  Grant FarmMaxwell HughesShatterproofWasteland HopWinchester Holiday and The Yawpers all completed their program and have graduated.

Check out the current #6 Colorado album title SpokesBuzz Vol 5

CBS logoCongratulations to Randall Dubis & Dan Treanor who will represent Colorado at the IBC in Memphis next winter in the solo/duo category and to Rex People’s and X-Factor who will represent in the band category.  Good luck in Memphis next winter to all.

NEW MUSIC in APRIL

Cracker - Berkley to BakersfieldCracker has been added and identified as (CC) for the purposes of tracking Colorado music.  Band co-founder Johnny Hickman is a local guy and has been for many years now.  In a conversation with his wife recently I learned that she used to listen to me on the air at 96.1 K-SKY in the late 80s when she was in high school.  I totally cracked up.

Also, I’ve added and tracked other artists who I’ve identified with a (CC) tag, namely Sara Cahoone, John Oates, Bill Frissel, Tia Fuller and others so I have no idea why it’s taken me so long to put Cracker in the mix.  Cracker’s latest Berkeley To Bakersfield came out last fall.  The band itself seems to be picking up some love among other local music supporters around the state … Cracker is making a few appearances locally this summer for you to keep your eyes open for.

John CommonWendy Woo BandEsme Patterson, The RailsplittersNatalie WalkerThe Raven and the Writing DeskMichael KirkpatrickRagged Unionand Clouds & Mountains all cracked the TOP 40 for the first time in April.

I suspect that we’ll see Wendy Woo, the Railsplitters, and Ragged Union stick around on the charts the longest.  Wendy is broadly known around the state, and does a great job of getting her work to interested djs.  The Railsplitters and Ragged Union are bluegrass bands of note in the state, and there is no shortage of independent djs who do favor Colorado bluegrass and Americana releases.
