MMMM – Monday Morning Music Meeting – April 14 2014

boninwf back stage nite 1 2012Monday morning.  MMMM .. Monday morning music meeting … traditionally, that’s the day we music directors used to sit down with the program director to discuss what new music we wanted to add to the playlist.  That also meant discussing what we wanted to drop from the currents – that just weren’t “working.”  There are sure some myths about radio programming floating around the populace, including among many of my musician friends.

We’re in a new era now – pads, tablets, streaming, smartphones, cloud services, and increasingly a fractured listener base.   Yet in all of this, traditional broadcast radio listenership remains strong.  Want the Facts & Figures?

Radio Facts and Figures
Here are the Facts:

  • Radio today reaches more than 90 percent of people in the U.S. on a weekly basis;
  • Radio reaches more than 68% of U.S. consumers ages 12 and older on an average day;
  • 242 million people listen to the radio each week;
  • There are more than 16,000 radio stations across the United States, covering 50 different formats;
  • Audio consumers are listening for more than 2 ½ hours every day; and
  • More than two-thirds of the weekly radio audience works full-time, tuning in during the working day, away from home.

One of the most interesting debates taking place today is the one concerning non-physical / non-owned music, and how it’s distributed and monetized.  Many of my peers over 50 think of anything internet related, other than iTunes, Amazon, or CDBaby direct downloads, as piracy intended to steal whatever direct commission revenue the band/artist/songwriter may be entitled to.  So let me set the record straight.

No, streaming is not piracy.  No, streaming is NOT a one-to-one sale.  Sales of single units (or eps, or albums) are fast becoming something we boomers are holding onto.  Streaming via your smartphone is the future.  AT&T signed onto Beats.  Spotify signed on with Sprint.  Rumors abound that Verizon will sign on with iTunes.  Rumors also abound that iTunes will be offering 24bit hi-res audio.

 Following a report that Apple is considering a major overhaul of iTunes, an overlooked rumor from March suggests the company may also be planning an entry into the high-definition music industry with 24-bit tracks.”

NEW MUSIC MONDAY

bonnie and the clydes - Music for the People Pt 1

Bonnie & the ClydesMusic for the People Part I EP
 … a marked improvement from the band’s debut, in songwriting, arranging, and vocal performances shared by husband/wife team Bonnie & Taylor Sims, with Taylor displaying an eerie similarity to Gordon Lightfoot’s vocal performance on the wonderful classic The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Evening Turns to Ashes.  Bonnie sounds perfectly and splendidly classic in her lower-mid range tones on Open Road.  Colorado country is different than country music in most parts of the US – with touches of West Texas permeating our own unique flavors and textures, which makes sense considering that Bonnie & Taylor are both from that region, along with other transplants like Andy & Jessica Eppler, aka Prairie Scholars .. or Austin transplants like Matt Skinner or Beth Williams — we sure do share a lot with our sisterly state to the south.   Music for the People indeed – this one scores an OTB ADD (out of the box add) – straight to The Colorado Sound Live365 mornings and afternoons (until it breaks TOP 40 statewide).

The Colorado Sound – S8 EP14 April 2014

boninwf back stage nite 1 2012Which city really has more places to play?  Austin, Denver, or Nashville?  Well, if it’s between Denver and Austin – Denver wins hands down … check out this great article in Westword with Gov. Hickenlooper  Interview: Governor Hickenlooper on why (and how) he wants to support Colorado music

UPDATE on Johnny O.  See pics here.    Much love was shared – much music played – much money raised.  From what I can see online, it looks like our brothers and sisters in the scene managed to raise somewhere around 5g for Johnny’s medical care, and loss of income while recovering.  Much love to all our friends who contributed, and to Johnny O.

The Colorado Sound S8 EP13 April 2014

Goat_Logo_color_on_white(Saturday April 5, 11PM) I feel old tonight.  Johnny “O” Ohnmacht had a stroke sometime Saturday.  According to blasts on FB, he’s in stable condition at St. Anthony’s.  As anyone who’s ever dealt with stroke can attest – this is very serious, and will require a long and arduous path to recovery – especially to the level that John’s been giving us the past few decades.  Much love my friend – I sure do hope you recover quickly.  We need you on our stages.

This news came on top of learning this past week that legendary guitarist/vocalist Eddie Turner (Zephyr, the Otis Taylor Band) suffered a horrific accident to his picking hand this past fall.  Eddie popped into the weekly blues jam at Oskar Blues Homemade Liquids and Solids in Longmont this past week and shredded a few tunes – he’s playing is fine, but limited, as doctors encourage him in his recovery.  Best wishes to Eddie and Johnny O .. we are indeed getting old my friends.

(Sunday April 6, 10AM) All’s quiet this morning in the debate over the merits of the Westword Music Showcase and Awards nominations.  Of course that won’t last long.  The Westword Music Showcase is in its 19th year.  I’ve been involved with the event in some way now for the past decade plus, doing sound, and as one of the fifty other music industry professionals who are invited to nominate acts every year.  And that’s where the rub goes on.

Every year a handful of bands jump out on msg boards and on FB and Twitter to complain about the process, and how there are acts undeserving and how they didn’t make the cut and should have if only Westword recognized them – when it’s not Westword who does the recognizing to begin with.

The WMS/Awards is driven by the industry, and powered by the fans.  The nominations are peer driven – nominated by foh engineers, door personnel, bartenders, studio engineers, radio talent, talent buyers, etc.  The Westword takes that list and publishes it in April.  In late June they hold the Westword Music Showcase.  From April through the end of June the public votes on their favorites, and write in acts not nominated by the local music industry.

The Westword Music Awards is one of, if not the most prestigious local music awards program we have in Colorado.  It is a celebration of our local talent – awarded by fans and industry.  Several acts have won five times, and have been enshrined in the Westword Music Hall of Fame – including the likes of Wendy Woo, Blister 66, Hazel Miller and others.

The only other Hall of Fame presentation that carries more weight is the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, now a permanent fixture at Red Rocks Amphitheater.  Sugarloaf, Astronauts, Flash Cadillac, Chris Daniels, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Judy Collins, John Denver and others have already been awarded their place in our music history.

So gang – go get your vote on … WESTWORD MUSIC SHOWCASE NOMINATIONS/AWARDS BALLOT

APRIL EVENT of NOTE = FoCoMX 6 featuring some 150 NoCo and surrounding area acts in numerous genres/styles, at some 20 venues in Fort Collins.  Those 150 acts were culled from 1300 submissions … 1300! … can you imagine being on the committee that has to sort through that?  Did you know there were that many acts from the state, let alone the NoCo region (including some from Denver metro)?  Hit the website – design your own schedule.  April 25-26.  See you there:  I’ll be mixing at the Equinox Brewery both days.

Friday Night
Michael Kirkpatrick 3:30pm to 4:15pm (Friday)

Saturday Night

Tallgrass 4:30pm to 5:15pm (Saturday)
