News Notes & Spins July 1, 2013

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013June 30, 2013.  WoW what a month.  Truthfully the busiest June I’ve ever had, adding to the busiest year I’ve ever had.  Thank you to the Bohemian Foundation, and to the Fort Collins Downtown Business Association for making that so …and to the several bands/artists I’m now working with directly… and to Oskar Blues who I do a fair amount of work for …and to all of the stations in the state now airing the show, along with the new and improving metrics on the website and at The Colorado Sound Live365 and The Colorado Sound TV.  Thank you …seriously.  I mean that.  When my wife and I decided we were going to take this journey 13 years ago I never thought this is where we’d be today.  It’s been a truly remarkable ride so far… and we’re a real long way from being done.

We didn’t get a lot of news from the stations this month.  I know that three, KGNU, KAFM, and KRFC still have HELP WANTED SIGNS out … check out their websites for more information.

In other station news, I reported on this earlier in the month, but it bears repeating.  There is a new radio station in NoCo… Radio 94.9 Colorado.  It’s a small low power 100 watt station with reach into Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, etc .. and according to market manager Stu Haskell (repeatedly) it will have a strong Colorado music accent throughout the day parts – in other words, you’ll hear CO music right up next to some of the biggest names in adult rock nationally.  Submit Your Music To Us   88.9FM KRFC (Fort Collins) is now airing The Colorado Sound on Saturday nights from 8-10PM, with Hour 1 repeated on Tuesday nights from 7-8PM and Hour 2 repeated on Thursday night from 7-8PM.

I’ve updated the playlists at The Colorado Sound Live365 and The Colorado Sound TV.  The radio station is broken down into Hitmakers (classic rock, oldies, classic hits, etc), Funk n Jazz n Nugz (urban contemporary, jazz, soul, funk, hiphop), Rock in the Rockies, CO’mericana,  TOP 40 (current TOP 40 chart as seen here) and a nightime/weekender mix made up of cuts from the other segments.  Check out the schedule here.

So about three weeks ago I put up a poll and asked what your 3 favorite Colorado releases of the year have been so far.  I didn’t get what I wanted out of it.   What I found out is that three or four of the acts have very active fan bases LOL.  However, mid-way through the year, the TOP 3 Colorado releases at Colorado radio are:

  1. DeVotchKa – Live with the Colorado Symphony
  2. The Lumineers – The Lumineers
  3. Otis Taylor – My World Is Gone

This whole thing with WordPress, YouTube, and Live365 is really starting to tickle me in the oh so not really funny kinda way … so, you might just easily go to this link  … where all of them will stream seamlessly for you …. This month’s video pick six = Churchill, Arthur Lee Land, Old Daisy featuring Katy McAllister, Wasteland Hop, Omniism, and Havok.

The Colorado Sound S7 EP23 June 2013

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013Just got in from the Colorado Brewer’s Festival … actually got in last nite – but it feels like I just got in.  To the friends I saw over the weekend .. much love – the lineup was stellar, and we had the most perfect weather imaginable.

I’ve got to mention that there’s a new radio station in Fort Collins/Greeley/Loveland that promises to go where no other commercial station has gone before in NoCo.  “Radio 94.9 FM, Colorado’s Finest Rock” debuted on May 17 @ only 100 watts, and is also featured on sister station 107.9 KPAW-HD2, as well as online at  www.Radio949colorado.com and  iHeartRadio.  Long-time  market radio pro (started at KTCL in the late 70s) and current Clear Channel market manager for NoCo, Stu Haskell, reiterated to me over the weekend (and several other times over the past month) that there will be a Colorado music focus on this station – – and as such the station is asking bands from around the region to submit their material for airplay consideration.  Haskell was recently quoted as saying that “Radio 94.9 will be a perfect fit for the Fort Collins local music scene and lifestyle.  We’re especially excited to spotlight local artists as part of our regular programming and offer the local community a unique radio station that has been missing from this area for a long time.”

In other station news, 88.9FM KRFC (Fort Collins) is now airing The Colorado Sound on Saturday nights from 8-10PM, with Hour 1 repeated on Tuesday nights from 7-8PM and Hour 2 repeated on Thursday night from 7-8PM.  Don’t forget – the weekly show that you hear on KRFC, KOTO (Telluride), KDNK (Roaring Fork Valley), KWMV (Westcliffe), and KFVR (Pueblo) is different than what you hear on The Colorado Sound Live365.  The program focuses on that current week’s hottest new releases, along with breaking news and notes from around the scene.  The online station focuses on the current month’s TOP 40 + selections from my collection broken down into four sections => Hitmakers, CO’mericana, Funk n Jazz n Nugz, Rockin the Rockies, and Weeknights/weekender mixes.

Don’t forget – vote for your three favorite Colorado releases of 2013 = http://thecoloradosound.com/2013/06/13/whats-your-favorite-new-album-of-2013/

Stations =>I’ve got a couple of  new releases coming to you in the next week … I’m getting ready to send out a limited number of the new release from the 3 Twins (featuring former Subdudes members John Magnie & Steve Amedee + members of the 12 Cents for Marvin horn section & the wonderful Nicole Zentveld on vocals).  The album is called De Nada … no doubt it will land as one of the top OTB adds in July.

That’s it … I’m out … have a super fantastic week … and I’ll leave you with the Video Pick of the Week and four brand new music shares …

Video Pick of the week comes from Herman’s Hideaway talent buyer Chris Thomas – formerly of Spools of Thread, and now upfront with Omniism.

Volunteer Bohemian Nights 2013

This in just now from the BoNi crew … hope you’ll jump in and join the fun this year… smoking lineup ..

Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest 2013 is just around the corner!  Dates for this year’s festival are August 16-18, with four great Colorado bands kicking off the weekend onFriday, August 16 at 5:00pm on Mountain Avenue. The rest of the weekend boasts a stellar lineup Saturday, August 17 from 11:00am to 10:00pm and Sunday, August 18 from 11:00am to 7:00pm.  Bohemian Nights will provide Northern Colorado with an amazing opportunity to experience Colorado’s best music in the heart of historic Downtown Fort Collins.

With over 70 bands performing on six different music stages, Bohemian Nights will celebrate and showcase musical talent of Colorado musicians and bands.  The festival also hosts the Kids Music Adventure, which gives children ages 5-12 the opportunity to play a variety of musical instruments, participate in interactive activities, and encourage them to embrace their own creativity. Kids Music Adventure will run both Saturday andSunday, starting at 11:00am and ending at 5:00pm.

As you know, none of this is possible without the help of amazing community support and volunteers. Thank you very much for volunteering in previous years at Bohemian Nights! We need hundreds of volunteers to help make this festival possible, and we are currently recruiting people for many different roles including: runners, welcome ambassadors, greenroom hosts, kids’ instrument petting zoo, and many, many more.

If you are interested in volunteering for Bohemian Nights 2013 music festival, please visit our website at http://www.bohemiannights.org/volunteer  to fill out the online volunteer request form.  If you have any questions please e-mail us atvolunteer@bohemiannights.org or call us at 970-407-7867 and ask to speak with Chelsea, Dani, Lindsay, or Anna.  Once we receive your volunteer application, the Bohemian Nights volunteer team will contact you about options and training sessions.
