CO Playlist – S12 EP05 2018

Three big stories came out this past week.  Elephant Revival announced an “indefinite hiatus,” Chris Daniels made a public announcement that he’s the new executive director of the Colorado Music Hall of Fame and KRFC executive James Lopez resigned.

Elephant Revival posted that “The band has been dealing with some family matters that have led us to reassess and realize that, while we’ve all been putting so much energy into Elephant Revival, we need some time to reconnect with our loved ones and focus on personal growth.”

The entire statement from the band is posted on their FB page.

Chris Daniels was inducted into the CMHOF in 2013, and also served as executive director for Swallow Hill music before becoming a professor in the music industry studies program at UC Denver.  He replaces former Denver Post music reporter and critic, and author of Colorado’s Rock Chronicles G. Brown.  No reason has been given yet for the change in leadership at the CMHOF.

KRFC Fort Collins will be looking for a new executive director.  James Lopez announced he’s stepping down after only six months on the job.  KRFC Board Chair Kate Hawthorne-Jeracki is noted as saying that the board will be looking for someone who can get the station “to the next level with funding and things like that.”

Colorado Playlist – S11 EP43

ROCKY MOUNTAIN MUSIC RELIEF mobilizes the Colorado music and media communities to raise funds to assist musicians throughout the U.S. affected by natural disasters.

NEWS NOTES & THOUGHTS

Often when we talk about music in our area we’re talking about bands that do “original” music.  This weekend my girlfriend and I went to the theater – as in Denver’s Bug Theater – to see Disaster, a spoof on 70’s disaster flicks like Poseidon Adventure.  I grew up in little theater, and despite not having gone to see a play in nearly 20 years I fell in love all over again.

Our music AND radio communities in Colorado suffered a loss over the weekend.  Bill Barwick was one of the several superb instructors at the Ron Baile School of Broadcast in Denver in the late 70s.  He was also one of the top cowboy musicians in our scene and a regular at the Buckhorn Saloon, and “the Voice of the Western Channel.”  Bill passed away while attending the Western Music Association convention in Albuquerque, NM on November 10.  RIP old friend.  And thank you for helping me realize my dream of a career in broadcasting, and music.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

To say I’m in love with the new Big Head Todd & the Monsters album New World Arisin’ is just a shade of an understatement.  After following and playing their music on the air since about 1988 I have to say it’s their best yet – and certainly their most rockin.

NOV 25 = GOATZ + the Grant Farm at Avogadro’s Number(Fort Collins)

Colorado Playlist – S11 EP10

Monday afternoon … still recovering from a weekend that took me to three rooms in three cities, and narrowly missing a drunk driver going northbound in the southbound lane of I25 on Saturday night.  He did not survive, I’m sorry to say.  Within minutes of me missing him, he was in an accident that shut down I25 at Loveland.

The big news this week is KRFC moving the Colorado Playlist from it’s long held 8PM slot on Saturday night to the 9PM slot on Friday nights … better to serve the live music crowd on a Friday.  The other big news is the signing of Brent Cowles to the same label that launched the Lumineers .. much love to Brent who said we might be able to score an exclusive on the new EP “Cold Times” coming in April.

Speaking of new releases – I’ll be debuting the new single from John Statz in next week’s show … produced by Megan Burtt.  Not the first time she’s sat behind the board directing the flow in the studio.

Tiffany Christopher scored another home-run in last week’s MMMM, not only reaping the most votes, but also a nearly perfect KEEP decision – seems to me that you just went “eh” at the rest of the selections.  Check out this week’s run of cuts below.

GOAT ON THE TOWN 3 NIGHTS 3 BANDS

This going out on the weekends is getting to be a good habit for this goat.  Not working isn’t necessarily the most financially positive thing I could be doing, but getting out from behind the sound board and getting out to some local rooms IS a good idea.

Gasoline Lollipops at Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox (Denver)

Friday night I stopped by the Roost in Longmont to catch a bit of one of my newest Front Range favorites, Francis & the Wolf — the runner up in this year’s Oscar Blues / Bolder Boulder Battle of the Bands.  Much respect to the band that won, Francis and the Wolf is an American Trad-Rock band of the first order, resplendent in their Bruce Springsteen meets Tom Petty blue collar swagger.

Saturday night my band GOATZ! shared the evening at Avogadro’s Number (Fort Collins) with the Matt Skinner Trio featuring bassist Ben O’Connor (Halden Wofford & the Hi-Beams) and guitarist Michael O’Connor (no relation to Ben).  I’ve said many times that Matt Skinner is my favorite country male vocalist in the area.  Saturday night confirmed my belief.  Matt is as capable of echoing the legends of the past as he is able to stand next to some of today’s most recognized Americana-country up and comers.

I got up early on Sunday morning to meet my brunch date at Opelia’s Electric Soapbox in Denver and 4 hours of Gasoline Lollipops.   If there’s any doubt left that the “pops” are one of the region’s hottest up and coming bands, put them away – a packed house in Denver is all one needs to move from small room status to bigger rooms like the Bluebird or Gothic in Denver.  Along the way Stephen Brackett, aka Brer Rabbit from Flobots, stopped by for some lunch/brunch and hung out for a set.

Ophelia’s is Denver’s hot small restaurant / music venue right now.  Talent buyer Randall Frazier has kept some of the region’s top acts moving through there – including Big Head Todd & the Monsters for a NYE show. That says a lot about the room’s cred in the scene.  We sat in the lower level next to the mixing station – the sound was perfect – not too loud so that you couldn’t talk and enjoy a great meal.  The food there is outrageously good.

Happy to say GOATZ! and Gasoline Lollipops have two shows together this coming spring/summer season – staring with May 20 at Avogadro’s Number in Fort Collins.
