News, Notes & Spins – April 1, 2010

There’s something about spring that makes this old goat jump… smack into the weeds beginning to show in the yard, the grass that doesn’t seem to want to come up through the rock and clay “soil,” home improvement projects that I have no business attempting in the first place as limited as my carpentry skills are … and music … lots and lots of music, especially of the outdoor live variety.  I can’t wait for the first downtown live show under the stars or on a warm (or not) Sunday afternoon… LOL … got that old spring fever I guess.

I want to throw some props out to Dave Herrera at the Westword for contributing to this blog.  Every week, Dave posts the playlists of shows like mine, the Mountain Homegrown Show (99.5FM the Mountain), Locals Only (KTCL), Local Shakedown (Radio 1190/KVCU), and the Colorado Wave.  And, every week I tabulate those spins into my spreadsheet so I can keep track of what’s getting played so I can chart it here each month.  So for that, thanks brother Dave 🙂

This past month I logged 201 current titles (going back to Jan 09 release date) into the spreadsheet that goes out to radio stations around the state.  Of those 201 titles, 110 received at least 1 point in the scoring system used for our charts each month – meaning that title got at least one spin at one station or show in one week during the tracking period for this month’s chart.  Of course this also means that 91 titles got no registered or reported spins this past month.

As I survey and chart Colorado music programs and radio stations I am always amazed at the music I believe they would likely play and that I wind up thinking they just don’t have in their collections.  I don’t know the exact reasons why more bands, artists, labels, and out of state promotion companies don’t service all of the independent stations and Colorado music programs that exist throughout the state … That has always baffled me.  In some of these cases, I’ve spoken directly to the “band” or label about servicing their record to radio and encouraged them to get the music out there — yet month in and month out I find many of those very titles I think might do well just don’t show up in our tracking.

When you read the charts here and ask why “X or Z” got so high up on the charts – it is first and foremost because they got their recording to the most number of stations and/or specialty shows… and they let those stations know in big bright letters that the recording is from a Colorado band/artist.  I cannot stress enough how important that piece of information is.  I talk to djs and programmers all over who might have a recording filed, but don’t know it’s from Colorado.

Typically, these generally independent programmers at public/community and college radio and specialty shows play what they know.  If they don’t know something is from Colorado and have no personal knowledge about that act they are not likely to play it.  So all the more reason to reach out and let radio folks know who’s who and what you do as musicians in this great state… especially jazz recordings.

Nearly all of the public/community stations in our network have jazz shows, yet I find Colorado jazz grossly under represented — and again, it’s an issue I believe where those titles are not being serviced throughout the network.

With that, here’s the spins chart for this month…

Video Tuesday – March 30, 2010

As I was driving back and forth from attending the wonderful Patty Griffin/Buddy Miller show last night in Denver,  I spent the time listening to the new cd by the Haunted Windchimes, Honey Moonshine, which was one of the featured releases in this week’s MMMM.  Here’s the video for the song I featured this week, My Baby Back.

My “date” for the show last night was a guy I’ve known for over 20 years and never attended a social event with, former KTCL/KCUV program director John Hayes … so natch we talked about radio, and Colorado music over the years, including Leftover Salmon – and the various side projects — so I found this vid shot at Denver’s Botanical Gardens that has each of the members shredding their asses off.  Have a great day folks 🙂

MMMM – Monday, March 29, 2010

(30 second samples of this week’s featured releases)

Lots of great music this week.  I attended day one of the UMX (Ultimate Music Experience), the official auditions for the 39th Annual CHUN People’s Fair, which is slated for June 5 and 6 this year.  Man there were some great performances, especially from the likes of the Congress, Other Side of Clearview, Quillion and other Denver/Front Range area acts.  On top of that, I’m in the middle of a major home remodel – so I loaded up the iTunes player and went to town on new music this week.  Here’s my five new featured titles for March 29, 2010.  Enjoy 🙂

The Rouge – Lady Luck (single)
Genre/Style:  Rock/alternative
Websitehttp://www.myspace.com/therougeband
Notes: Produced by long time Fort Collins resident singer-songwriter and producer Christopher Jak at the Blasting Room in Fort Collins.  Unsubstantiated report from a highly regarded source this week that the Rouge inked a deal with Atlantic Records.  April Fools or not we’ll see soon I’m sure.  In the meantime, this band is yet another in a long running line of success stories emerging out of Colorado.

The Foot. – Primary Colors
Genre/Style:  Rock
Websitehttp://www.myspace.com/findthefoot
Notes: This band came out of the woodwork this past week thanks to Dave Herrera who blogged about them in Backbeat (Westword).  The full album is available as a free download… and so far the word among local music afficienados has been nothing less than stellar.  I expect a long ride for The Foot.’s debut in 2010.

Jon Ridnell – Reliance
Genre/Style:  roots rock, r&b, blue-eyed soul
Website: N/A
Notes: I had the pleasure of mixing the band that Jon fronts, Black Dog, recently.  Unlike the trio that I mixed sound for, Jon’s solo album is a much bigger endeavor.  Produced by award winning Sally Van Meter, the album features the highly praised talents of Sally, Eric Thorin, Eric Moon, and Dave Watts… with a great list of special guests from the region.

Haunted Windchimes – Honey Moonshine
Genre/Style:  Americana, folk, bluegrass
Websitehttp://www.reverbnation.com/thehauntedwindchimes
Notes: Officially, this is the band’s debut full length recording.  Their previous effort was an ep/split called Vice/Versa that came out I believe in 2008.  Full of great harmonies and songwriting that calls to mind the movie Oh Brother, Where Art Thou, this band from Pueblo has been packing in sold out crowds in SoCo and is set to expand state wide.

Dave Lemieux And House Of Soul – Jazz Shaped
Genre/Style:  Jazz, Contemporary Gospel
Websitehttp://www.myspace.com/davelemieuxandhouseofsoul
Notes: I’ve always got to throw some jazz into the mix and this record has captivated me since I first received a copy of it.  Recorded live at the Soiled Dove Underground in Denver, this is an extremely spirited performance throughout and even includes spoken word/hip-hop influences.  Move beyond the jazz on this record and the band infuses influences ranging from Andrea Crouch to the Winans.. and according to their bio even the music of the Blind Boys of Alabama.

This weekend was the UMX (Ultimate Music Experience) in Denver – the official auditions for the 39th annual CHUN People’s Fair, being held June 5 & 6.  I was there emceeing the event.  I ran an “encore presentation” of my December 9, 2009 show “My favorite songs of 2009.”  These were the tracks that found their way most often played in my personal mp3 player, my car stereo, and on my home computer … Next weekend will be a new show Vol. 2 Episode 13 w/ some new music.
