NEWS NOTES and SPINS – OCTOBER 1, 2014

The Colorado Sound is supported by SpokesBUZZ, presenting BandSWAP Homecoming 2014, by The Mishawaka Amphitheatre, presenting Raven & the Writing Desk with Savage Cabbage and the Covz on Oct 10, and by Colorado Case Company makers of insulated soft cases, gig bags, case covers and rigid cases for most instruments, including hard to fit instruments.  Pls visit my friends’ sites.  They keep this thing going.  Much appreciated.  Oct 2Homecoming (Denver): Winchester Holiday | Phin | Maxwell Hughes | Amanda Broadway.

Oct 5 = Homecoming (Fort Collins): The Deadwood Saints | Pandas & People | Bonsoir, Catin | Lewi Longmire and the Left Coast Roasters.  The Denver show is free and all ages.  The Fort Collins show is free.  Don’t know if it’s all ages.  I have to assume so, as it’s at Avogadro’s Number in Fort Collins.

Goat_Logo_color_on_whiteOk.  I get it.  Everyone needed a break.  Or, everyone got really busy in September … more shows, less time spent online or listening to the radio … more vacations, etc.  Truth is, all metrics were down a skosh this past month.  July and August were bombastic.  September?  Yeah, not so much really.  The blog did better than last year, but not as good as July and August… The Colorado Sound Live365 continues its downward trend that began four months ago.  Listed below are the TOP 5 songs heard this past month.

Total plays statewide were down a bit this past month also.  I’ve never seen so many stations with only 10-12 entries for the month.  We also typically tend to see 50-55, maybe 56% of all titles played. This month rocked down to 46% of 270 tracked releases.  I’ve also changed the reporting rules up a bit:  because of the necessity of stations to publish their playlists online, which nearly all stations do, I only monitor those stations that publish their playlists online.

Today’s recording artists, and those who own the recording, only get paid royalties by way of stations that stream online and pay a performance royalty via SoundExchange for the right to do so.  They do not receive royalties from the performance of their recording via terrestrial airplay.  Only the songwriter and the song publisher receive royalties from terrestrial radio broadcasts/performances.  Stations that air online are required to publish a playlist of their songs and to report those cuts to SoundExchange, on a regular basis.  INFO

Stations that do not comply with that regulation are in effect cheating those who own the recordings they air, and the musicians on those recordings.  In a day when physical content and digital sales continue to trend downward, streaming by any means is fast becoming the way by which recording artists will earn revenue from recordings in the not too distant future — it’s already begun.  Like the lost 8-tracks of lore, owning even an mp3 will seem quaint one day.

There are a number of stations doing membership/fund drives from the 1st thru the 15th or so.  Please make sure you reach out to the stations that air this program and support those you listen to.  And make sure you msg them and request your favorite Colorado releases.  The only way we’ll get more played is if you insist on it.  Support local community radio – and thank them for supporting Colorado artists.

Tons of new releases seemed to flood stations in late August.  I cannot recall the last time we saw so many (D) debuts in the top 40.  Included in the TOP 40 this month, a new release from Kyle Hollingsworth that’s worth a listen to, along with Tennis who cracked the TOP 3 out of the box … check out all the new debuts with whatever Soundcloud or Bandcamp embeds I could find.

VIDEO PICKS FOR SEPT

SHEL makes our video picks of the month for a new single that is a whole lot poppier than just about anything they’ve done in the past.  This time, instead of a video created BY the band to showcase a new song, this is a video shot at a street concert somewhere… cool song girls.  Other videos featured this month from Strange Americans, Ark Life, Tennis, Reed Foehl, Taarka, Young Ancients, and My Body Sings Electric.

STATION BY STATION

A few months ago I began listing only those stations that tracked ten or more Colorado LP/EP or single titles per month. I’ve added one more condition; the spins must be verifiable. Stations that do not list a playlist are techically in violation of federal rules put in place so that those who own and those who perform on a recording can claim any royalities due from said performance. [XX] = number of reported current year (2013-2014) titles

Stations monitored for spins = KAFM, KBUT, KDUR, KGNU, KOTO, KRCC, KRFC, KRZA, KSJD, KSUT, KUNC, KVNF, OPENAIR 1340, The Colorado Sound radio show and Radio94.9 Colorado.

RADIO 94.9 COLORADO (Loveland/Fort Collins/Greeley)
I don’t have a reliable way of counting spins from Radio 94.9 Colorado, the only commercial station in CO dedicated to airing one Colorado track per hour.  Their system doesn’t allow for the kind of tracking I require for charting.  However, here is what they added in September.

THE COLORADO SOUND LIVE365 [245]
This is the first time I’ve posted the monthly TOP 5 tracks, as heard on The Colorado Sound LIVE365.  The spins are totally arbitrary.  It’s all pretty mysterious to me actually.  All I can do is sit back and watch what you all listened to each month.  I just fill the playlist.

1. Covenhoven – A Love Sincere
1. The Congress – Loretta
2. Knocean – Against the Wall

The Colorado Sound S8|EP37 2014

Usually I spend my weekends listening to a lot of new releases, as I work on the Monday morning post and sometimes News Notes & Spins for the 1st.  This weekend though, it was not specifically a new release, but one that I’d only tasted since it came out over a year ago now – Nina Storey – Think Twice.  Nina has been a part of the Colorado music scene since her debut in 92.  Since then, she’s had an up and down career – mostly up – getting marginal cred in the media, and losing out in a terrible performance on one those celebrity based real life talent tv shows examples of the downside events.  Her move to Los Angeles has proved beneficial for this Colorado original who continues to move forward, dismissing criticism — in a testament to her longevity and her perseverance, Nina was featured on a Times Square digital billboard this past week – in advance of shows in NYC.

Truth is, I couldn’t listen enough to Nina’s album.

Video Pick of the Week:  Supergroup:  “…a music group whose members are already successful as solo artists or as part of other groups or well known in other professions.” (wikipedia).  Young Ancients = supergroup comprised of Colorado Blues Society Award winner (2013, 2012 solo/duo category) Cary Morin + Subdudes founding members John Magnie and Steve Amedée.  I’ve had the pleasure of working with this lineup a few times this past year, and will be doing sound for them October 31 at Oskar Blues Homemade Liquids and Solids in Longmont.  Do I need to say you should be there?

Speaking of where you might want to be.  I’ll be joining SpokesBUZZ for a couple of events on Oct 2, and Oct 5. I have to assume so, as it’s at Avogradro’s Number in Fort Collins.

The Colorado Sound S8|EP34

IMG_20140901_182522_349I’m always amazed when people say to me, “I didn’t know THEY’re from Colorado!”  LOL.  It happens regularly to be honest.  I think that really has been the guiding idea in presenting “The Colorado Sound” as well as “Offstage …Beyond the Music,” that I can share Colorado music, and the lives of musicians and music industry personalities who have called Colorado their home with folks who might not know who’s who and what they do.

I’ve had an absolutely amazing summer.  I got to present Coloradan and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield, Poco, South-Hillman-Furay) as a headliner on a show I produce annually (Carbon Valley Music & Spirits Festival), and as well at one of the acts at this year’s incredible Bohemian Nights at New West Fest.  He and I communicated this weekend, and he’ll be appearing as my guest on the next episode of Offstage …Beyond the Music.  #superstoked!

This weekend I was gifted tickets to see Aspen resident and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee John Oates (Hall & Oates) with his long running (15 yrs) Aspen trio.  What a treat to see this Colorado band in a state of the art intimate 200 cap room … WOW!  Check out his latest album when you get a chance … he killed the cut “Stone Cold Love” that he and fellow Coloradan Ryan Tedder co-wrote and co-produced, despite not having the specific beats that Ryan used to underpin the song.

He also did “Lose It In Louisiana” from the same album release, and, of course, a few classic Hall & Oates hits including “She’s Gone,” which he says has been played at every show, solo or with Daryl since 1972.  I also thought it interesting that he pointed out a couple of times that he did not bring cds to sell, and that people should purchase it on iTunes or elsewhere.  The trio format was a blast, and you could tell they were good friends out having a good time.

Leaving you with a video of John at Aspen’s KSPN from last April, doing a song he did Friday night that he wrote with esteemed songwriter Jim Lauderdale.. Enjoy.

New Offstage …Beyond The Music episode starts this week .. check it out below.
