NEWS NOTES & SPINS AUG 1 2013

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013722.  Multiply 1 x 24 hrs x 7 days x 4.3 weeks …that’s how much Colorado music can be aired in one month, if a station played only one cut per hour.  If one song got played 3 times in 24 hours it would receive 90 spins in one month.  That’s a remarkable number as I look at the spins data from this past month.

OpenAir 1340 spun Gregory Alan Isakov‘s new album, The Weatherman,  92 times in July.  After that there isn’t any comparison at all.  It’s actually pretty rare to see a Colorado album get even 30 spins in a month at any public / community or college station.

Pretty Lights latest, A Color Map of the World, had the most impressive gains of the month – in radio and in sales.  In radio it jumped from #30 to #2 on the strength of repetitive spins at KRCC (Colorado Springs).  In sales it was announced that the vinyl record went #1 nationally, while overall physical and digital album sales placed them in the TOP 40 nationally.  Ironically, the album scored nowhere as many spins as Isakov’s record did at 1340 ..

Halden Wofford & the Hi*Beams lays righteous claim to #1 “country” band in Colorado status with their now 5th album “Rocky Mountain Honky Tonk” rocking a debut at #5, with 6 of our 14 reporting stations showing spins this month.

It’s notable that only KRFC (Fort Collins) and OpenAir 1340 are presently in the 722+ cuts of CO music a month club.  And if all goes according to the buzz, there will soon be a commercial radio station committed to the same kinds of numbers – with much higher per month rotations per song than we see now.

722 … a remarkable number.

I updated the entire rotation at The Colorado Sound Live365.  Check out the schedule page to see when the TOP 40 is playing.  I posted the current rotation of artists here.  The Colorado Sound Live365 is the only 24/7/365 all Colorado (and Colorado connected) music station online (that I know of).  So, if you’re in the mood to catch 20 mins of some Rocky mountain goodness, tune in .. and share, pls.  It’s different than the show I do weekly.  That show features the latest breaking music, news and notes from around the scene – so catch both as often as you can 😉

One more major festival this season for me –> Bohemian Nights at New West Fest.  Aug 16-18.  I’m stoked.  This is the 9th year now for this event.  And aside from the big national acts who are brought in to anchor the event, it’s the insane representation of acts from here in Colorado that gets me giddy.  The Samples come off a summer filled with successful regional festival shows to headline the Friday night kick-off show with Fierce Bad Rabbit, SHEL, and Samuel Mouton.  Born In the Flood does one of their reunion shows this summer to open for Ben Harper & Charlie Musslewhite on Saturday night … and Colorado Music Hall of Fame inductee (November) Chris Daniels brings his Better Days show to the Mountain Ave stage to open for Leon Russell on Sunday.  In between?  Download the app …

The Colorado Sound S7 EP28 July 2013 (subtitle: One Busy Summer for Goat)

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013Too busy.  Yesterday was my youngest son’s wedding in Castle Rock.  It went well until after the ceremony, when the rain came down and washed out the party that featured Chris Daniels & the Kings.  Today, somehow or another, I have to pull spins for Aug News Notes and Spins column .. and take my grand daughter to the movies lol.  Have a great day 🙂

I don’t have too many pics of me with my two youngest, Christopher and Elisha.  Elisha says I have to wait until I’m 80 before she gets married … yeah, right kid 😉

Friday night I was at the Alibi in Laramie, Wyoming – one of my favorite venues anywhere – doing sound for my pals Halden Wofford & the Hi*Beams.

Thursday night I was emceeing the Bohemian Nights Thursday Night Live show in Fort Collins that featured Wasteland Hop.  Next Thursday night it’s the return of Diana Castro …

Next Friday night, Aug 2, I’ll be in Fort Collins to emcee for the Downtown Summer Sessions, featuring The Holler! with the Gromet, produced by the Fort Collins’ Downtown Business Association.

Next Saturday, August 3, it’s the 6th Annual Carbon Valley Music & Spirits Festival in Dacono featuring the Samples, Face, Dan Treanor’s Afrosippi Band with Erica Brown, After Midnight Jazz Band, Monocle, Jaden Carlson Band, Jake Miles and more.

Video Pick of the Week – new from Strange Americans frontman Matt Hoffman off his solo EP Lateral Moves

The Colorado Sound S7 EP26 July 2013

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013When you get to do what I do for my life and living everyday it stands to reason that I am very lucky goat.  Thursday night I got to host the Bohemian Nights Thursday Night Downtown Concert Series with Dave Beegle & the Jurrassicasters .. one of the region’s most popular classic rock cover bands the past couple of decades now… and it showed based on the overcapacity record setting crowd we had Thursday night.

Friday night I hosted the Fort Collins Downtown Business Association Summer Sessions – this week with the Matt Skinner Band opening for the Patti Fiasco… and let me say that band leader Alysia Kraft  is one of the most entertaining front persons I’ve ever seen .. locally or nationally.  The band will be up in front of Born in the Flood at Bohemian Nights at New West Fest on Aug 17 … they’ll also (hopefully) be releasing their new album in time for Bohemian Nights at New West Fest, Aug 16-18.  Dave Beegle is currently mixing and mastering … they have, they said, one more mixing session left to go… I heard one specific cut Friday night called “Black Magic” (at least that was the refrain) – that is sure to be a “hit” with Colorado djs.

This week’s headlines were not all included in the show itself. Churchill has broken up.  However, at the time of this writing I can find only one source for this information – and that source quoted a “band representative.”  I imagine this story will be more deeply researched and reported on this coming week by either Westword’s Dave Herrera or the folks at HeyReverb.com which is where the story broke.

In other news …

I got the new Escape Goats release “On the Lam” but not in time for this week’s show … so look for that next week.  No good news on any forthcoming Dave Beegle record however.  He and I talked on Thursday night when his band the Jurassicasters played Old Town Square … he said basically he’s got it going, but can’t determine when it will get done.. it’s been in the “it’s going stage” for over a year now and he’s so busy with other projects right now he can’t find time to work on his own.  He’s also working hard to get the new Lion Drome release done.

Other titles that came in this week – for next week’s show – new releases from Esther Sparks & the Whiskey RemedyTaylor Mesple, and Foxfield Four.

This week I look forward to hosting Selasee & Fafa Family on Thursday night  … and two of my BFGFs (can goats have BFGFs?) .. Liz Barnez and Hazel Miller on Friday night.  All shows are FREE, ALL AGES, and begin promptly at 7PM.  Thurs nights done by 9-ish, Friday nights done at 10:30PM.

VIDEO PICK of the WEEK:  Leftover Salmon has launched a promotional drive for each of the next four singles + Breckenridge Brewery … so about the only way you can get this killer new jam is by grabbing some BB ale … that’s all I know really … enjoy …
