The Colorado Sound S8 EP12 March/April 2014

boninwf back stage nite 1 2012(Sunday March 30 4PM) — I am screaming busy pulling spin data for the April 1 “News, Notes & Spins” post.  So, I’m just a few hours late this week.  I am very happy to announce a sponsorship partnership with an old friend of mine.  Chuck Grewe and I played together in a band for several years in the 90s.  Today, he is the bass player for the Fort Collins’ based Wooleye, and he and his brother Bill own Colorado Case Company.  I am beyond pleased that my old friend and his brother have decided to support our efforts in elevating awareness of Colorado music on the radio.  Please visit their site (link below)

PrintQuestion from a young (18-24) musician:  “We can’t seem to sell cds; what are we doing wrong?”  You’re not.  Research indicates that the 18-24 age group is more interested in listening to streaming services (YouTube is #1) and broadcast radio than purchasing either a digital rendering, or a physical copy.   With iTunes on the way to building a Pandora killer (good luck with that), there won’t be much of a need to purchase – especially if the streaming service offered is free (yes, we’re willing to tolerate advertising).  That should not stop anyone from participating in Record Store Day on April 19.

The Colorado Sound S8 EP10 March 2014

boninwf back stage nite 1 2012(Sunday March 16) If you had a vocation for doing one thing and one thing only to enrich your life, and provide an income, what would it be?  We have a lot of folks in Colorado who have a glorious vocational appetite and aptitude for giving us great music, whether live, and/or studio, and/or video.  A little bit of this music makes its way to other parts of the country, and even the world.  And every once in a while we get a star breaking out, bringing some light to what we have in our backyard.  But what if we don’t recognize that star as being from our neighborhood?  Then what?

I am a huge believer in thinking globally, but acting locally.    We have a wealth of media here in Colorado that are out in front representing what’s happening locally.  We have public television programs that feature Colorado video and live performances.  There are over 20 radio stations that not only play the hits from Colorado, but also the unknown and as yet discovered.  And, there are numerous print and internet publications that put a focus on local music and all the various and related activities that involve locally produced music.

We in the media cannot do the job of raising public awareness alone.  Media needs the artist as much as the artist needs media, to represent and promote for each other.  Whether a musician or a fan, if we’re going to get folks to know who’s who and what they do and raise awareness of Colorado music, we need each other to spread the word.  We in the media really cannot do that job alone; we need you too.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

The winner of the 2013 Video Pick of the Year went to Andy Palmer and Tage Plantell for their video from Andy’s album Hazard of the Die.  Tage got hold of me this week to share this new video.  It’s from a relative newcomer to our scene, Marti Christopher, who comes to us from Toronto, Canada.  He plays all the instruments, and is self produced.

NEWS & NOTES

chris at ob hmls sunday june 16 2013MARCH 3 UPDATE – Today is the 4th year anniversary of this blog site.  Wordpress was nice enough to send me that notice – or I would have spaced it out.

When you scroll down to the TOP 40 for the month you will notice one very significant “improvement.”  After a few years of procrastination I went ahead and provided links to the artists’ online site.  Please visit those artists you are unfamiliar with.

I’m pretty pleased to announce new records for page views and page views per day for the month of February .. the old record was set in 2012.  Stream-starts at The Colorado Sound Live365 have been okay, and all things considered I think for the first year it’s been pretty good.  Folks are hitting the station page in numbers that match up well with the visits here, but stream-starts still proves to be a low percentage.

I think maybe some folks are looking at the top five most recently played, to see if they know it, and then moving on pretty quickly .. that’s just a guess though.  When folks do start a stream they listen an average of 20 minutes – so about five songs on average.

THE CONDITIONAL TOP 3 –  The stations I track airplay at are among the state’s top non-commercial public/community and/or college stations.  I only track one commercial station, Radio 94.9 Colorado (NoCo).  It is not easy to track commercial radio spins.  Commercial radio plays music from here in Colorado.  Stations like KBCO, KBPI, KTCL, and others over the years have been incredibly supportive of Colorado music.   That’s what fuels two of the CONDITIONAL TOP 3.  The third link is a 1/5 member Colorado Connection (CC).

The Fray and OneRepublic are two bands that non-comm radio largely ignores.  Every once in a while I’ll see an isolated jock play a track from either/or, but it’s never enough to really make it to the top of the charts as measured here.  Commercial radio/media however blasts both bands all over the airwaves and Internet.  Based on the commercial media exposure alone, both of the new/recent albums from these bands are #1 and #2 among Colorado releases in the state.  That’s not to say that Big Head Todd doesn’t receive their share of commercial radio airplay – but it’s much more limited than what the Fray or OneRepublic receive.

The #3 Conditional TOP 3 pick is Hard Working Americans, which features keyboardist Chad Steahly, also one of the founding members of Great American Taxi.  While I was pulling spins from around the state, I was blown away at the love this band is getting right now.   Truth is, among the non-comms there were enough plays to make it #1 (disallowing the Fray and OneRepublic).

FEATURED VIDEOS FEB 2014

The six song video playlist for February (in no particular order) includes Red Devil Magic, H*Wood, Katie Herzig, Safe Boating is No Accident, In the Whale, and Devan Blake Jones … this is one of those month’s where I got my closet dance freak happening. (no kids, you do not want to see that) 😉
