Friday night was a special event. As you might know, unless I’m working a show, Miss Pattie and I rarely actually go out. I traded out a sound gig this weekend to attend the benefit for Love Hope Strength. Love Hope Strength is a local Colorado / Denver based non-profit, that seeks to provide diagnostics and treatment for cancer worldwide by promoting their work and engaging participants at concerts globally.
From their mission statement: At Love Hope Strength we turn concerts into lifesaving events. Through our GET ON THE LIST campaign we register marrow donors resulting in matches from concerts around the world. Through unique events, like Everest Rocks and Kilimanjaro Rocks, we build cancer centers, giving people access to early detection and quality cancer care. More info at http://www.lovehopestrength.org
The concert to benefit Love Hope Strength was stimulating, engaging, funny, warm, and musically splendid. Where, as they mentioned, they might get 50 people signed up at a Red Rocks show, 5o of those among the 300+ who were on hand Friday night got ON THE LIST.
On stage guests included project founder/executive producer Megan Burtt with friends Chris Daniels, John Magnie, Reed Foehl and Tyler Depres (Science Partner) with members of the Congress, SHEL, Bop Skizzum, Chimney Choir, Rachel & the Kings, the Epilogues, and Covenhoven. Audience “guests” were too numerous to mention – and the room did look to be sold out with standing room only by show time.
A note about this and other shows (the few) I’ve been too at the Soiled Dove Underground — show began promptly at 8, there was an intermission at about 8:50, and the second act ended at 1030, allowing plenty of time to mingle with the band and pony up to the merch table. My wife and I were out of there before 1130, a real treat for a local show.
Radio stations and print media around the state will have the LOVE HOPE STRENGTH benefit compilation IN GOOD COMPANY within the next week. Also coming to radio via Rocky Mountain Music Network = Estes Park artist Brad Fitch record Columbine Blue. Brad looks uncannily like John Denver (he does a John Denver tribute show) – so much so that even a limo driver used to ferrying luminaries got a bit whigged out when he met Brad, and who reportedly remarked, “John Denver is dead, right?”

Brain freeze: seriously. Time to just put the facts out there. We did pretty good in October for listenership and readership here at The Colorado Sound. October listenership at The Colorado Sound Live365 was up significantly over September, rockin’ in some 450 unique streams for about a 14.5 per day average. This site here managed to eek out 43 unique page views per day over the month (2013 avg is 51 views per day). In October two days broke single day listening records at 47 (new Saturday record) and 34 (new Friday record) respectively… Next goal is to break 25 streams per day avg – and a monthly daily average of 60 here.

Fan of KUNC Music, heard weekdays from 9 AM-2 PM, and KUNC Music After Hours (weeknights 9 PM- midnight), can now enjoy KUNC Music 24 hours a day, thanks to KUNC Music 247, a new 24-hour music stream launched in September.
The new stream provides an option for listeners who opt for music over Morning Edition, All Things Considered, or the other Public Radio Favorites broadcast over KUNC’s FM signal.
KUNC Music features new releases alongside established, quality artists that reflect Colorado’s unique lifestyle. “Classic artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Armatrading, and the Subdudes have loads of great songs, but they’ve been mostly abandoned by commercial rock formats” says KUNC Music Director Benji McPhail. “KUNC Music plays those artists alongside newer artists like Arcade Fire, Jason Isbell, and Neko Case. You’ll also hear the occasional Sinatra classic, local favorites like Jeff Brinkman, some vintage soul, blues and more. It’s a one of a kind listening experience.”
The stream is available at KUNC.org/247, as well as the station’s mobile apps.
Got this off Facebook this evening. Always happy to introduce another great Colorado music program to the listening public. “Hey all you KGNUnits! We will be creating a new program called Local Gold on KGNU’s new all music stream, After FM. It will exclusively feature Colorado made music. What Rocky Mountain musical acts would you like to hear on Local Gold?”
VIDEO PICKS FOR OCTOBER:
I think I may have figured out this YouTube thing LOL… we’ll see. This month’s video’s feature a live shot of Danny Shafer at a flood relief show that’s pretty special, along with the latest from the Fray, Tennis, the Lumineers, Star Jaguar and others… eight videos this month… so about 35 mins? Better than any half hour episode on tv 😉

Sorry I’m late guys. Well, not too late… still, what an intense month. Really. Thanks to the many hundreds of musicians and music industry support persons and radio announcers/djs for pulling out the stops during the recent flooding that took place. The initial “omg what the f’k just happened” moment has worn off and the “shit now what do I do” stage has set in. There is still a tremendous amount of work to be done … so with that, and because they support live local music as they do…
Oskar Blues has created the “Oskar Blues CAN’d Aid Foundation”. The organization is a registered Colorado Non-Profit Corporation that is currently awaiting recognition of its 501(c)(3) status. Donations will be used to provide immediate relief and long-term help to areas damaged by the floods. Funds raised will be distributed to the Lyons Community Foundation, the Longmont Community Foundation and the Community Foundation of Boulder County. If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution, please visit www.foundation.oskarblues.com.
River’s Rising: Front Range Flood Relief 2013was put together by jam scene fixtures and Colorado residents Tony Hume and Annabel Lukins who called upon their musical friends to help flood victims. The compilation features 28 live tracks from Colorado bands like Leftover Salmon, Jeff Brinkman, Elephant Revival, String Cheese Incident, DeVotchKa, Yonder Mountain String Band, Head for the Hills, and the Motet, andnational jam acts including Furthur, Widespread Panic, Dumpstaphunk, Umphrey’s McGee and Soulive.
I am deeply thankful to the bands and the venues that have exerted tremendous efforts almost daily to help out those in need.
STATION NEWS and NOTES
I’ve added a new reporter this month, KSUT (Ignacio). They’re playing about what other stations like KUNC (Greeley) are playing .. about 10-12 current/recurrent titles. A discussion with the KSUT music director gave me pause to think about another conversation that another local radio guy and I had concerning regulations that affect what we can play when and what we can make available online.
There are rules. For instance, a radio station cannot play an entire album if they stream that show online, nor can they focus on just one act for more than a couple of songs consecutively. A station may not allow shows to be downloaded or streamed on demand. Another rule is that if a station is streaming they’re supposed to provide an online playlist. It doesn’t take much to find out who’s doing what correctly or incorrectly. Kudos to KSUT for realizing the rules. They will not be streaming the new Elephant Revival record in its entirety on Oct 4 – but they will air it over the air on terrestrial radio in its entirety.
KUNC is up to something. Be on the watch for a 24-7 streaming service. That’s all I know. Aside from that, the station is upgrading their coverage in the mountains which requires changing frequencies on a couple of their stations. KVNC (Vail) is now broadcasting at 90.9 FM ( formerly 90.7), and KMPB (Breckenridge) is now at 90.7 (formerly 88.7)
KBUT Community Radio is moving from 89.9 to 88.7 in Gunnison and expects to power up its new transmitter in Gunnison (KGNI) in mid October, although the recent government shutdown could throw a wrench in those plans.
The KGNI project represents a substantial increase in broadcast power in the Gunnison area and should present a stronger, more reliable signal to our listeners. Over time, we’ll replace our 40 watt translator with a 6000+ watt full-power transmitter. For more information on the project and the corresponding “Power Up” Capital Campaign, visit http://www.kbut.org/powerup
VIDEO PICKS of the MONTH
Once again I cannot seem to provide embedded video from YouTube … so … featuring some newbies on the scene I think along with a few more established artists … a good batch of 9 this month .. woulda been 10 but one got corrupted and wouldn’t play… oh well .. LOL.. gotta love tech LOL … .enjoy http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjTLYGkfkx3rFIiR_GQ87nH0AgsTDoBRL
