Sunday I experienced a “fainting” spell while out on a 20 mile bike ride that landed me in the ER (by ambulance). Monday I experienced a broken thumb and bruised ribs while out on a 15 mile bike ride that landed me in the ER (I drove myself). On both days I did not make it more than 3.5 miles into my ride. I blame the weather for getting me too excited. Along the way I talked about music – Colorado music – with those who attended to me.
Every person I spoke with was between 25 and 50 yrs old. With a few notable exceptions no one knew any of the current crop of bands making “headlines” regionally. Yeah, everyone knew BHTM was from here … and a couple of folks knew about OneRepublic and the Fray, but beyond that there were generally blank stares and “I don’t go out very often” comments.
Broadcast radio and Pandora were the sources for music – not any other source was mentioned. I did of course let everyone know they could listen to Colorado music online at The Colorado Sound Live365 … need to remember to keep business cards in my pocket though so I don’t have to write down the url everytime … www.live365.com/stations/thecoloradosound.
While suffering through all of this (i did a lot of maniacal laughing actually …esp thinking about the medical bills to follow) I was graced with a private listen to the new Megan Burtt album coming out this August. I won’t spoil the fun, but this one will leave you with a huge grin, shaking your head at just how amazingly talented my friend truly is. Of course hard core fans know this already.
Happy to report this morning that Richie Furay’s new album “Hand In Hand,” that I’ve been playing on the show since last summer, will finally be released to the general public on March 31. It is currently the #1 most added album at Americana radio nationally – though no word yet on whether those folks servicing the record to radio actually even know we have radio in Colorado … more on that to follow in the days and weeks ahead.
While checking out the Americana Music Association radio airplay charts I noticed the latest Leftover Salmon release, High Country, at #21 – down from #18 LW and 19 the week before.
Well, off to the doctor to assess the damages … I’ll be sure to let folks know where to tune in for Colorado music … hope you’ll do the same today.

NEWS & NOTES
For all intent and purposes, November concludes the year. Any music that gets released in November is labeled as the following year, so we’re already into the 2015 season. The big music news this month was the release of the new Leftover Salmon album “High Country,” featuring new permanent member Bill Payne (Little Feat). I can’t recall off the top of my head what the last album was that debuted at #2. The album was released on November 28, but the band made sure that djs around the state were serviced early enough to share the love pre-Thanksgiving. Outside of that one album the top 18 spots remained about as it was last month.
The biggest news of the month came from G. Brown at the Colorado Music Hall of Fame. Richie Furay let us in on part of the secret in October, during Offstage …Beyond the Music, when he let us know that Poco and he would be inducted into the hall this year. G finally released the rest of the lineup for the Jan 9 gala: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Firefall, Manassas, Poco … with special nods to Richie Furay and Steve Martin among others. G. Brown will be my guest on Offstage …Beyond the Music in January – no doubt we’ll be talking a lot about the Hall of Fame.
VIDEO PICK OF THE MONTH
I don’t watch very much television. Most of what I watch is late night stuff like the local news, a half hour of Jimmy Kimmel, and about twenty minutes of the Daily Show, before I fall asleep. Sometimes I watch on demand episodes of shows like Gotham — but almost never do I watch talent shows – so I had no idea this summer that a local kid was on America’s Got Talent, nor did I know he made it to the TOP 5 finalists in September, before being eliminated. That’s okay; TOP 5 is enough to propel the take off of a career if played right. With that, here’s a video playlist of Miquel Dakota, from Monument, Colorado … enjoy

It’s official — August is the worst month of the year in terms of blog readership. I thought maybe we broke the August curse this year, but no…. not even close. We barely eeked out an increase over last year, hitting 1199 unique page visits … a far bit off our record 2,227 in May, and at 39 unique visits a day we’re really off of the 53 a day average for the year. I attribute that to the fact that I spend less time writing in August and more time on stage – so look for increased blogging activity in the next few months to make up for it LOL.
The Colorado Sound can now be heard every Sunday morning from 8AM-10AM on Radio 94.9 Colorado … www.radio949colorado.com. Radio 94.9 has committed to airing 1 Colorado track per hour of programming. That places this Clear Channel owned property right up on top of the heap with Open Air 1340 and KRFC (Fort Collins) in airing Colorado music.
STATION NEWS & NOTES
KBUT wrapped up another successful summer pledge drive on August 12th. With the support of our family of listeners near and far, KBUT met our goal of $42,000. KBUT is also in the midst of a capital campaign to cover expenses related to a new transmitter in Gunnison, CO. This 6,500 Watt transmitter (88.7 KGNI) will replace a low-powered translator that currently broadcasts at the same location. KBUT expects to be broadcasting from this more powerful and secure signal sometime in September. More information is available at http://www.kbut.org/powerup
KGNU has hired David Wilson as Station Manager. David is already working part-time training and starts full-time on September 17. Welcome David.
MUSIC NEWS & NOTES
I sent out a couple of new releases in August that feature two of the state’s wonderful female voices – Alysa Kraft from the Patti Fiasco, and Monica Whittington from the Monocle Band. I also received the new album from Gabrielle Louise – which by all standards should win best packaging of the year. I was also fortunate enough to work with a few of the best at this year’s Bohemian Nights at New West Fest … including SHEL, Rachel James (Rachel & the Kings), Hayley Helmericks (Snake Rattle Rattle Snake), Erica Brown, and Cassie Taylor – and equally, Jennifer Lane and Sophie Reed received standing ovations for their performances this year. So that got me to thinking… what are the top female fronted records right now?
1. Cassie Taylor – Out of My Mind
2. Paper Bird – Rooms
3. The Patti Fiasco – Small Town Lights 4. Finders & Youngberg – I Don’t Want Love You Won’t Give Until I Cry EP (Erin Youngberg is co-lead singer in band)
5. Bonnie & The Clydes – Wrong Side Up
6. SHEL – SHEL
7. Monocle Band – Monocle Band
8. Esme Patterson – All Princes, I
9. Ending People – Fill Your Lungs
10. The Whiskey Bottles – Grandville
Of course this takes NOTHING away from anyone else – we’re tremendously blessed to have had some of the best female singers, songwriters, and musicians in the country here in CO…
In other news – the Motet is in the studio with Colin Bricker at Mighty Fine Productions in Denver. Supercollider just wrapped up tracking with Colin. Leftover Salmon is working on a new album. String Cheese Incident is working on a new album. The new Richie Furay is closer to getting to us. There’s going to be a new Piedmont Brothers Band record that will feature the likes of Rick Roberts, Jock Bartley (Firefall) and Richie Furay… Sean Kelly of the Samples thinks the new record will be done right after the first of the year, and there’s a new album coming out from Chris Daniels featuring Freddie Gowdy of Freddi & Henchi fame… I’d look for that one maybe next spring, but Chris HAS been known to surprise, so we’ll see.
Former Denverite, and Denver native Rusty Young, who still rocks “Denver” as home on his Facebook page, has been inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame – and right on the plague it says “Rusty Young grew up playing steel guitar in country bands around Denver…” No doubt he’ll eventually wind up in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame as well. Rusty has also just released another Poco record, “All Fired Up,” although he’s the only member of the original gang that appears – making it a weak “Poco” release, but a pretty damned strong Rusty Young release.
VIDEO PICKS – AUGUST
This month’s PICK-7 includes jazz guitarist Matt Fuller, Danielle Ate the Sandwich, Colorado Springs hip-hop The ReMinders, the Raven & the Writing Desk, Andy Palmer, SHEL, and Sean Kennedy.
