David Booker is a local living link to first generation blues legends who moved to Denver from Manchester, England, in 1981. This past June, David was diagnosed with prostate cancer.  Since beginning treatment, David has not missed an opportunity to perform.  Over the years, David has himself hosted several benefits for other musicians.

On November 30th, legendary Colorado Music Hall of Fame member Chris Daniels and Freddi Gowdy of Freddi Henchi Band fame (both cancer survivors) are performing as a duo (with special guests) to raise funds to help David’s medical costs.

Donations can be made anytime at: https:www.gofundme.com/musician-david-booker-fights-cancer prior to Nov. 30th, 2pm.

Early donations are recommended because seating is limited. An early donation is your ticket into the benefit.  After 2PM, if seating is available, donations for admission can be made by cash or check.

All donations are automatically entered to win a $50.00 Chris Daniels & the Kings gift basket. (Must be present to win)

Names of advance donor’s are automatically sent to the promoter of this event, Vera Ptak. Please bring identification for admittance. Questions? Call Vera: 303-241-0814

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

Bands do not often rise to popularity or acclaim without some level of tribulation.  Beginning with the departure of the band’s guitarist in 2015 and the death of drummer Luke Mehrens’ fiance the same year, the trio has been pretty much hell bent on succeeding on their own terms.  The SIR Band’s new album, “So Cold,” comes out Dec 8th.

NEWS NOTES & THOUGHTS

Often when we talk about music in our area we’re talking about bands that do “original” music.  This weekend my girlfriend and I went to the theater – as in Denver’s Bug Theater – to see Disaster, a spoof on 70’s disaster flicks like Poseidon Adventure.  I grew up in little theater, and despite not having gone to see a play in nearly 20 years I fell in love all over again.

Our music AND radio communities in Colorado suffered a loss over the weekend.  Bill Barwick was one of the several superb instructors at the Ron Baile School of Broadcast in Denver in the late 70s.  He was also one of the top cowboy musicians in our scene and a regular at the Buckhorn Saloon, and “the Voice of the Western Channel.”  Bill passed away while attending the Western Music Association convention in Albuquerque, NM on November 10.  RIP old friend.  And thank you for helping me realize my dream of a career in broadcasting, and music.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

To say I’m in love with the new Big Head Todd & the Monsters album New World Arisin’ is just a shade of an understatement.  After following and playing their music on the air since about 1988 I have to say it’s their best yet – and certainly their most rockin.

NEWS NOTES and THOUGHTS

I lost a very good friend this past week; someone who was insurmountably influential in me building my business as a stage manager and main stage/event emcee.

Roger Armstrong was the executive director of CHUN (Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods).  Their main annual fundraising event was the CHUN People’s Fair, held the first weekend of June.

Roger, like other friends (and my late wife) lost his battle with cancer.  RIP my friend – I WILL always remember our friendship.  I’ve been looking at the picture of us on the wall outside my office for years – and it’s not coming down.

The PF is no longer produced by CHUN, but the spirit remains the same.  I intend to honor my friend at the event in June 2018.

My girlfriend and I took a drive to Colorado Springs on Sunday, to visit Garden of the Gods on what might be the last best Sunday to do so.  Hunger drove me to go into downtown CS to visit the new Oskar Blues location there.

Yes, they will have live music – no, it will not be every weekend.  The “music room” is set apart from the main restaurant in the “basement,” and is fashioned after a speakeasy.  The apparent intent, in talking with the GM, is that they’ll do music every once in awhile.  That, of course, may change.

The Oskar Blues Brewery 15th ANNIVERSARY party set for Nov 18th at the Oak Room in the Brewery in Longmong is SOLD OUT!

The COLORADO PLAYLIST has been added to rotation at KHEN in Salida — will air Sat 5-6PM and Tues 8-9PM.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

Chris Daniels’ & the Kings latest is Blues with Horns, Vol 1.  It’s up for Grammy consideration, and is the first #1  charting record (Roots Music Report) in the band’s 30 year history.
