Colorado Playlist – S11 EP31

Rusty Young

Rusty Young is a Colorado music native.  As not only an original member of Poco, but its enduring remaining original member, he is enshrined in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame along with fellow Colorado music native George Grantham, with whom Rusty was a member of the 60’s Front Range based psych-rock band Boenzee Cryque.

Rusty just released his first non-Poco named solo album, Waitin’ for the Sun .. that I spotlighted a track from in this blog  a couple of weeks ago.  I will say I’m far more impressed with this solo effort than I was with the last Poco album that Rusty fronted.  Produced by Rusty with fellow Poco member and songwriter Jack Sundrud, Rusty’s voice stays as strong and true as you’d hope for someone in their 70s now, with well over 50 years of singing experience.

Rusty doesn’t leave the sound of Poco too far behind on this solo effort – songs like “Heaven Tonight” could have easily been a marquee track for Poco circa 1980s.  “Honey Bee” lies a little closer to something I might have expected from say Levon Helm stylistically – a bit more “dirt” than the polished SoCal country-rock that Poco is most well known for.

Waitin’ for the Sun won’t win Rusty any new millennial fans .. but rather, with his tired aching “rusty” voice it’s those of us old enough to remember him as a “kid” who will appreciate what’s left of this unsung country-rock legend, and the life he speaks of in this record.

Gotta send some love to the Coteries and Hey, Lady! (the B-52s Tribute) for an exemplary job at the final Wellington Downtown Summer Concert Series this year.  Folk fans are going to love the Coteries as they develop their fanbase regionally – and Hey, Lady! is already one of the region’s TOP 5 tribute bands … much love and thanks for a great show.

Colorado Playlist – S11 EP28

This proclamation by Gov. Hickenlooper pretty sealed the deal this weekend for me.

Whipporwill UMS 2017

Three days of doing sound at the UMS (Underground Music Showcase) + 1 evening of hosting the Bohemian Nights Thursday Night Live show with the Burroughs, and I have to admit I’m whipped.  What a tremendous four day run .. with some of my major summer events still to come, including:

Pretty Mouth UMS 2017

The South Broadway Christian Church is one of the most requested and respected venues at UMS every year.  Friday and Saturday produced excellent audiences and some exceptional showcases of talent.  Prob’ly due more to the weather than anything else, Sunday – yeah, not so much.  The highlights of the weekend were definitely the delectable harmonies of Whipporwill, and the powerful presentation put on by Pretty Mouth.

Call me late to the party on this band, that I only just heard about.  Marie Litton is one of the most outstanding female rock vocalists of our area.  The band showcases a sound that resonates with considerable dynamic range – moody, dark, powerful and accessible.  Expect to hear more from them on the show this year.  Be on the look for a new release from Pretty Mouth this fall.

Chris J & Chris K – 2 GOATZ! – Wellington Main Street Concert – July 15 2017

What a weekend.  GOATZ! played 3 shows in 3 days .. AND the Colorado Playlist is back on the airwaves at 94.3FM in Summit County!

Saturday, GOATZ! was part of the Wellington Main Street Concert Series with Grateful Dead tribute band Switchman Sleepin’.  A magnificent evening with a cool breeze and about 500 people enjoying themselves in small town Colorado park – complete with local vendors and local beer.  Doesn’t get much more American … or Colorado … than that.

Sunday we spent the day in Fort Collins as part of Walrus Ice Cream 30th Anniversary – a Benefit for Adoption Dreams Come True, an organization I’m deeply indebted to for helping me adopt my oldest daughter Shannon. Thanks to Channel 7 News Anchor Shannon Ogden for swinging by for a 30 minute set of his own music … dude’s got skillz folks.

Most people who follow the Colorado Playlist are mostly familiar with my on-air work over 39 years in NoCO, and not in my role as leader of GOATZ!  In fact, the upcoming 11th Anniversary party also marks my 39th year in Colorado radio.  I started out at 1310AM KFKA and 96.1FM KFKZ in Greeley, 39 years ago, before moving onto 99.1FM KUAD (Quad 99 – the Power Station)
