Colorado Playlist – S11 EP31

Rusty Young

Rusty Young is a Colorado music native.  As not only an original member of Poco, but its enduring remaining original member, he is enshrined in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame along with fellow Colorado music native George Grantham, with whom Rusty was a member of the 60’s Front Range based psych-rock band Boenzee Cryque.

Rusty just released his first non-Poco named solo album, Waitin’ for the Sun .. that I spotlighted a track from in this blog  a couple of weeks ago.  I will say I’m far more impressed with this solo effort than I was with the last Poco album that Rusty fronted.  Produced by Rusty with fellow Poco member and songwriter Jack Sundrud, Rusty’s voice stays as strong and true as you’d hope for someone in their 70s now, with well over 50 years of singing experience.

Rusty doesn’t leave the sound of Poco too far behind on this solo effort – songs like “Heaven Tonight” could have easily been a marquee track for Poco circa 1980s.  “Honey Bee” lies a little closer to something I might have expected from say Levon Helm stylistically – a bit more “dirt” than the polished SoCal country-rock that Poco is most well known for.

Waitin’ for the Sun won’t win Rusty any new millennial fans .. but rather, with his tired aching “rusty” voice it’s those of us old enough to remember him as a “kid” who will appreciate what’s left of this unsung country-rock legend, and the life he speaks of in this record.

Gotta send some love to the Coteries and Hey, Lady! (the B-52s Tribute) for an exemplary job at the final Wellington Downtown Summer Concert Series this year.  Folk fans are going to love the Coteries as they develop their fanbase regionally – and Hey, Lady! is already one of the region’s TOP 5 tribute bands … much love and thanks for a great show.

COLORADO PLAYLIST – S11 EP29

It’s not Monday morning.  It’s actually Monday evening, as I’m just now getting caught up from a long weekend of music events.  Thanks to everyone who came out to the 10th Annual Carbon Valley Music & Spirits Festival and to the 11th Anniversary of the Colorado Playlist at the Mishawaka Amphitheatre, our primary sponsor of the show.

Despite the rain both days, we all had plenty of fun.  Even though Cracker got rained out, big hugs to Anita at Oskar Blues Homemade Liquids and Solids in Longmont for allowing us to bring Cracker over for a late night set.

I still have appearances this summer; so I do hope you’ll come out and catch some great live Colorado music.

  • Aug 11-13 = I’ll be on the Mountain Ave main stage at Bohemian Nights at New West Fest, that will feature Leftover Salmon on Friday night.  Coincidentally, Cracker, with whom Leftover Salmon recorded “Oh, Cracker, Where Art Thou” several years ago will be on the Library Park Stage at the same time.
  • Aug 19 = Wellington Downtown Concert Series w/Hey Lady the wonderful B52s tribute band.

Sept 9 = GOATZ! and Kerry Pastine & the Crime Scene at Avogadro’s Number in Fort Collins

Sept 10 = GOATZ! at Oskar Blues Original Grill and Brew in Lyons

Big news and rumors of big news have been making the rounds here recently.  First of all, it is true that Colorado native and original member of Poco, Rusty Young, who played in Boenzee Cryque in the 60s has a new solo record coming out.  For many years he’s fronted the name Poco – and I say fronted because the other original members, including Richie Furay have long distanced themselves.  At any rate, the album is due out September 18.

In the rumor column — is Paper Bird about to fly apart? Hmmmm… rumors have been swirling for a few weeks, and even Paper Bird member Paul DeHaven has stepped out with a new solo effort.  While I have not confirmed the rumor, my sources are indeed extremely reliable.  I included the new Paul DeHaven single in this week’s show.
