CP S14 EP01 2020

Happy New Year.  Back in the office, and ready to grind.  I hope you had a super fantabulous holiday season.

I made a change to how we do the MMMM (Monday Morning Music Meeting).  Instead of voting to KEEP or DELETE the song from the CP library, I’m asking you to RATE THE MUSIC 1 (worst) to 5 (best).

Congratulations to the winners in the FoCOMA (Fort Collins Musicians Association) 2019 Peer Awards, held Sunday Jan 12 2020 at Washington’s Fort Collins (a CP supporter).

Along with all the other winners, the Fort Collins based Americana band Whippoorwill took home Album of the Year, Video of the Year, Performance of the Year and Americana/folk Band of the Year.  Whippoorwill’s Alysia Kraft took home Front-Person of the Year honors .. both for her efforts in Whippoorwill and in Pattie Fiasco.

Among the evening’s highlights was a live appearance by the Beeves, one of the hottest up and coming rock bands in the region today. It’s pretty easy to see why they are, based on their brief two song set.

The Subdudes latest, Lickskillet, breaks the TOP 5 most reported Colorado titles in Roots Music Report this week (see below)

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

It’s pretty rare that I lead off with a video for a song I haven’t been able to play on the show yet, but the new single from Nathaniel Rateliff came out before it arrived in my in-box.

If you’re expecting a new roots R&B record, you’ll be sad.  If you were hoping for new direction, you’ll be disappointed.  This is a throwback record in Nathaniel’s diverse catalog of songs, and styles.  Before there was Nathaniel Rateliff the rhythm and blues artist, there was Nathaniel the folk artist.  Tossed in for good measure was Nathaniel the alternative rock artist (Born In the Flood) and indie folk-rock artist (the Wheel).

This won’t be an easy record to listen to. Nathaniel has suffered a divorce and the death of his friend and songwriting collaborator Richard Swift. We may love the Night Sweats swagger and swing, but Nathaniel has always been best when he has stripped away the layers and noise, and gotten quieter.

The Missouri born Denver transplant is destined for a Grammy Award nomination someday, and the kind of long career enjoyed by songwriters like John Prine (who he’s rumored to be doing an album with). Songs like this only add to the pedigree.

CP S13 BEST OF 2019 PT 2

As I enter the 14th season of this show, it’s worth saying that when I started this show it was because so many of my closest friends and family had no idea who was who from Colorado.

Folks didn’t know that multi-Grammy winner Dianne Reeves went to George Washington High School in Denver or that Philip Bailey and two of the other members of Earth, Wind & Fire went to East High School; nor did they know that Indie.Arie was born in Aurora… or that such famous musicians as Dan Fogelberg, John Oates and others have made Colorado their home over the years.

And, of course, most didn’t know who the bands were with just a couple of Colorado residents, and those firmly made up of local players in our communities.

In light of that, we have Grammy nominated acts in our BEST of 2019 who did not live here full time (Indie.Arie) and whose bands only have two members living here (Lettuce).  And one who is a native of Johannesburg, South Africa who has a farm outside of Boulder, and tours internationally (Gregory Alan Isakov).  Of course, the Lumineers, who scored Album of the Year is originally from NYC.

We are a state of immigrants and native Coloradoans, who all contribute to our incredible music scene.  Let’s keep it that way.

At Bohemian Foundation, our focus is on building community …by coming together to create and enjoy music.

CP S13 EP49 2019

MONDAY DEC 16, 2019

Thanks for all the FAN FAVORITE votes for LP, Single, and Video of the year.  Those polls are now closed.  The BEST OF 2019 show will air DEC 28-JAN 03 2020.

Now it’s time to direct your attention to the CP BEST OF THE DECADE 2010 – 2019.  This poll will close on December 28. The Best of the Decade show will air Jan 4-10 2020.

I got asked the other day why I added the new Mary Chapin Carpenter single, “Our Man Walter Cronkite” to this week’s playlist.  Two reasons:  One, it was produced here in Colorado by Jamie Mefford (Gregory Alan Isakov, Nathaniel Rateliff) at Colorado Sound recording studios in Denver.  Two, it’s been reported that she purchased a home in Boulder.  See VIDEO PICK of the Week below.

Equally, Philip Bailey‘s latest also got added, because he’s a Denver native who is one of the country’s top award winning songwriters, and vocalists.  Congratulations to Philip and his bandmates in Earth Wind & Fire for their Kennedy Center Honors.  A somewhat and relatively minor award would be induction into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, which I can almost certainly see happening once the new Hall is built and open.

VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK

See above notes about Mary Chapin Carpenter, and the reason why she made the show this week.  The song alone would be enough to earn high weekly honors, given as it does the subject matter and the relevance to what’s going on socially and politically in our country today.
